Police gears up for 1st phase of Polling

The Andhra Pradesh Police is fully geared up for conducting the elections in 17 Parliamentary Constituencies and 119 Assembly Constituencies on April 30 in Telangana.
According to a press release issued by DGP office, police department has taken all measures for maintenance of law and order in the run-up to the first phase of General Elections on April 30 in 10 districts of Telangana, which also comprised of two police commissionerates – Hyderabad and Cyberabad.

Closure of HMDA Parks tomorrow

“It is notified for information of the General Public that, the NTR Gardens, Lumbini Park, including Laser Show, and Sanjeevaiah Park will be closed on 30-04-2014 (Wednesday) on account of General Elections. Consequently, there will be no activities in the area of the Parks”(NSS)

Governor permits prosecution of 32 Excise inspectors

Governor E. S. L. Narasimhan has taken a serious view over the nexus between the excise officials and liquor syndicate in the state and granted permission to the ACB for the prosecution of 32 Excise Inspectors.
The AC B authorities sought permission of the Governor for prosecuting the excise inspectors who were charged of colluding with the liquor syndicate. Cases were registered against as many as 180 excise and police for colluding with the liquor syndicate. However the files regarding these were gathering dust with the state government for the last one year.

Trinamool leaders challenge Modi to prove allegation or apologise

Throwing a challenge to BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, two senior leaders of West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress Tuesday said they would put in their papers if he could prove his allegation that a painting by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was sold for Rs.1.80 crore.

While Trinamool national spokesperson Derek O’Brien said he would quit his Rajya Sabha seat, Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim said he would step down as minister.

Mamata’s close relatives bought Rs.20 crore property: CPI-M leader

Senior CPI-M leader Gautam Deb Tuesday claimed that close relatives of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee have purchased property worth around Rs.20 crore in recent years and asked about the source of the funds.

The Trinamool Congress hit back regretting the way the former minister has dragged the family of a political personality on the issue and accused Deb of having close links with Saradha scam mastermind Sudipta Sen.

Addressing a media meet, Deb launched a no-holds-barred attack on Banerjee, calling her a “pathological liar” who had “problems in her DNA”.

AP bifurcation details to be made available online

Union Minister Jairam Ramesh on Tuesday informed that the government was planning to upload the details related to bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh on its website from May 8.

Speaking to media persons here, Jairam Ramesh said that the complete details of reports submitted by 21 committees would be accessible to the general public from May 8, a day after the conclusion of second phase of polling in the State. He also said that the progress in the bifurcation process would be reviewed on May 9.

Wardhannapet Congress Candidate attempts suicide

Upset over the media reports that he was losing the elections, Congress candidate from Wardhannapet Assembly segment Kondeti Sridhar on Tuesday reportedly attempted suicide by consuming poison.

According to reports, Sridhar consumed some unknown poison at a mango orchard in Pedda Pendial village of Warangal district. He was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Hanamkonda. He is stated to be out of danger and his sugar and blood levels were normal.

Only Congress can provide stable government: Shabbir Ali

Congress senior leader Mohammad Ali Shabbir on Tuesday claimed that only Congress party could provide stable government in Telangana.

Shabbir Ali appealed to the electors to vote in favour of Congress candidates to ensure formation of a secular and stable government in Telangana. He said that the new State of Telangana needs experienced and mature leadership. The re-formation of State could take place only through in-depth planning and clear cut agenda. Mercury soars to 44 degrees in Odisha’s coal belt

Odisha Tuesday continued to reel under a severe heat wave condition, with the mercury soaring to 44 degrees Celsius in the state’s coal belt, an official said.

The coal town of Talcher in Angul district, about 170 km from Bhubaneswar, recorded a maximum temperature of 44 degrees Celsius, the state’s highest so far this season.

Talcher is known for its coal reserves and has a number of coal mines. People stayed indoors, shops were closed and roads wore a deserted look in the town and its nearby areas.

Telangana and Seemandhra are not in Pakistan: Javedkar

BJP national leader Prakash Javadekar on Tuesday accused TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao of issuing provocative statements.

Speaking to media persons here, Javedkar said that KCR was trying to exploit the regional feelings by making objectionable statements against Seemandhra people. He alleged that KCR had described Seemandhra people as “Rakshasulu”. He strongly condemned KCR’s alleged warning that Seemandhra people would be chased away from Telangana. He said KCR should realise that Telangana and Seemandhra are part of India and they are not in Pakistan.

Uttarakhand flood victims still crying for help: Modi

BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi Tuesday said the effects of last year’s floods in Uttarakhand could still be felt there and both the central and state government have failed to rehabilitate and compensate people.

“The victims of the flood are still crying… you have your government in Delhi as well as in Uttarakhand, but still you can’t help the affected people,” Modi said addressing a 3D rally.

“You can do anything to win elections but you don’t have time to address the people’s concern,” he said.

Special drive to improve Delhi street food vendors’ hygiene

The National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI) Tuesday launched a drive to upgrade the hygiene level of street food vendors in the national capital.

The drive that started in the Sarojini Nagar market in south Delhi will focus on providing training to the street food vendors in safe handling of the street food.

Around 120 such vendors have applied for registration under the Food Safety Act 2011 and will be trained by NASVI in safe handling of food.

Bombay High Court dismisses Jundal’s plea for physical court appearance

The Bombay High Court Tuesday dismissed a plea by terror acused Sayyed Zabiuddin Ansari, alias Abu Jundal, to quash a Maharashtra government order banning his court appearances on security grounds, his lawyer said.

Jundal had filed a plea in July 2013 challenging the government resolution (GR), contending that he had a right under the Constitution to appear before courts to defend himself in various cases filed against him, said his lawyer Ejaz Naqvi.

Bollywood actor-filmmer and host of socially-relevant TV show “Satyamev Jayate”, Aamir Khan says he is “sad like every Indian” due to the state of the country’s political system, but stressed that change will only come when people stop voting for criminals contesting elections.

“I wish and hope that political parties rise above this and stop giving tickets to criminals. Ultimately, the change will come when people stop voting for criminals,” Aamir said here during the NDTV Indian of the Year Awards Tuesday.

Policemen let jailed Bihar leader use phone, suspended

The Election Commission Tuesday ordered the suspension of half a dozen policemen for allowing a jailed former legislator to use a mobile phone in a court premises in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district.

Munna Shukla was brought to the court for a hearing in connection with a murder case, said additional chief electoral officer R. Lakshmanan told media persons.

He said Shukla was shifted from Muzaffarpur jail to Bhagalpur jail following an order of the poll panel after a complaint said he was found using a mobile phone in the court premises.

Khurshid backtracks on Congress support to Third Front

Going a full U-turn, Union Minister Salman Khurshid today went back on his statement expressing support to Third Front, saying that UPA would form a government at the Centre.

“UPA is going to form next government at the Centre. Those who are going to support it will be known in future. Congress will not support Third Front,” Khurshid said, addressing an election meeting in Azamgarh.

BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi said on Tuesday that the Congress was a sinking ship and that the days of the mother-son duo (Sonia and Rahul Gandhi) were over.

Talking exclusively to Zee News, Modi said, “When the polls were announced the Congress thought that there would be a hung Parliament. They have been saying that we will not let Modi become PM, we will back a Third Front government. From their comments it seems that they have already lost the polls and the days of mother-son duo are over.”

BJP promises Seemandhra ten years of special status if elected

BJP’s national leader Venkaiah Naidu promised Seemandhra region “special status” for ten years, if his party was voted to power at the Centre.

“If the BJP is voted to power at the Centre, Seemandhra will get special status for ten years,” BJP national leader Venkaiah Naidu said here today.

Addressing a public meeting at Rayachoty on Tuesday evening, Naidu alleged that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who accepted special status for Seemandhra for ten years in private conversations, violated his own assurance and announced special status for only five years in parliament.

Telangana ready for polls tomorrow: Bhanwarlal

Election Commission has made all arrangements for the smooth conduct of polls in Telangana region tomorrow.

The first phase of simultaneous polls in Andhra Pradesh will be held for 119 Assembly and 17 Lok Sabha seats of Telangana region, Andhra Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer Bhanwarlal said today.

“All arrangements have been made for the polls. Over one lakh EVMs have been sent to respective polling stations,” the CEO said while addressing a press conference.

Scorpions drummer jailed in Dubai: reports

An American drummer for the rock band Scorpions has been sentenced to one month in jail after being convicted of offensive behavior in Dubai, according to reports by newspapers in the United Arab Emirates.

The government-backed National newspaper reported today that James Kottak was convicted of insulting Islam, raising his middle finger, and being under the influence of alcohol while in transit at Dubai airport.
