US military men to find kidnapped Nigerian girls

The US has deployed about 80 military personnel to Chad as part of its efforts to find more than 200 schoolgirls who have been kidnapped in Nigeria, US President Barack Obama said Wednesday.

The personnel will support the operation of “intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance aircraft” for missions over northern Nigeria and the surrounding area, Xinhua quoted Obama as saying in a letter to Congress.

“The force will remain in Chad until its support in resolving the kidnapping situation is no longer required,” Obama added.

Bahraini women demand abducted Nigerian girls’ release

Bahrain’s women union Wednesday condemned the abduction of 300 Nigerian school girls by a terrorist group and called for an immediate release of the school girls.

Members of Bahrain Women Union met Tuesday with the UN officials in Bahrain to submit an open letter to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, expressing their solidarity with the kidnapped school girls, Xinhua reported.

Militants from the terrorist group, commonly known as Boko Haram, kidnapped the girls April 14 from a government school located in Chibok town in Borno state.

NATO to help Bosnia and Herzegovina over flooding

NATO will help Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) in all possible ways over the floods, said visiting NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen here Wednesday.

BiH has been hit by widespread flooding since last week, the worst in 120 years.

NATO is in close contact with the European Union to see how to provide assistance to BiH, Xinhua quoted Rasmussen as saying duirng a press conference.

“I assure you that we are ready to help in every way possible if it is required of us,” he noted, adding that the bloc is committed to the future security and stability of Western Balkan region.

Ukrainian violence has left 127 killed: UN official

As many as 127 people have died in several weeks of violence in east and south Ukraine, which will make it more difficult for the country to hold presidential elections in the region Sunday, a UN official has said.

Ivan Simonovic, the UN assistant secretary-general for human rights, made the statement while speaking to reporters outside the Security Council chamber, where he just briefed the 15-nation council at a closed-door meeting on the current situation in the eastern Ukraine following his trip to Ukraine May 14-19, Xinhua reported.

Russia to retaliate Magnitsky List extension by US

Russia Wednesday called the extension of the so-called Magnitsky List drawn by the US as baseless, and vowed a retaliation.

“We do not leave sanctions rampage against Russia unanswered,” Xinhua quoted the foreign ministry’s human rights envoy Konstantin Dolgov as saying in a statement.

Moscow will introduce restrictions on US citizens in line with reciprocal principles as well as fairness, he said.

Russia, the official said, would sanction those who have avoided punishment by Washington for human rights violations, including those committed against Russian citizens.

Explosions in China market cause deaths, injuries

Explosions at a market in China’s Xinjiang Uygur region left an unknown number of people killed and injured Thursday morning, Xinhua reported.

The explosions occurred at an open market in Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang Uygur region. All the injured were rushed to several hospitals, police said.

Two cross-country vehicles driving from north to south ploughed into people in the market at 7.50 a.m. Explosives were thrown out of the vehicles, witnesses said.

Iran, IAEA to resolve Iranian atomic plan’s key issues

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Iran agreed to take further steps to resolve the possible military dimensions of Tehran’s nuclear programme, the Vienna-based UN nuclear watchdog announced Wednesday.

The UN nuclear watchdog has agreed with Iran on five practical measures to be implemented by Iran by Aug 25, 2014, including two concerning a long-stalled investigation into the allegation that Iran may make efforts to develop atomic weapons secretly, so-called the possible military dimensions (PMD) of its nuclear plan, Xinhua quoted an IAEA statement as saying.

UN calls for immediate end to violence in Mali

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon has urged the immediate cessation of the renewed violence in northern Mali, which threatens to destabilize the country again.

Ban also called for the establishment of a ceasefire, Xinhua quoted a statement issued by his spokesperson Wednesday as saying.

“The Secretary-General particularly emphasises his concern for the security of civilian populations, and recalls that the protection of civilians is an obligation for all parties,” it said. “He condemns the killing of civilians and calls on the perpetrators to be held accountable.”

US hails India, Pakistan engagement

The US Wednesday welcomed more engagement between India and Pakistan, as the two rivals show goodwill to each other before India’s upcoming inauguration of a new prime minister.

State Department spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki was responding to Indian invitation to Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and leaders of other South Asian nations for the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister designate Narendra Modi slated for Monday, Xinhua reported.

Sharif has invited Modi for a visit to his country.

Omar scraps new recruitment policy

In an apparent course correction after the National Conference’s debacle in the recent Lok Sabha polls, Jammu and Kashmir government Wednesday approved scrapping of the much-criticised new recruitment policy which was implemented two years ago.

The recruitment policy was rolled back during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah here.

Omar had announced day before yesterday that he is going to produce a proposal before the Cabinet to scrap the ‘New Recruitment Policy’ with an immediate effect.

Egypt’s presidential hopeful Sisi wins expat votes

Egypt’s presidential candidate and ex- military chief Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi has won a landslide victory in the polling by Egyptians living abroad, the country’s presidential election commission announced Wednesday.

Sisi garnered a staggering 94.5 percent of the votes cast by overseas Egyptians in 124 countries from Thursday to Monday. He is now widely anticipated to win the home elections set for next Monday and Tuesday, Xinhua reported.

The election commission also revealed that Sisi’s opponent, leftist leader Hamdeen Sabahy, only received 4.5 percent of the votes.

Ukraine rules out bilateral talks with Russia over crisis

Kiev Wednesday ruled out the possibility to hold bilateral talks with Russia over crisis in the eastern Ukraine.

“In today’s environment, I believe that bilateral negotiations between Ukraine and Russia are not on the agenda,” Xinhua quoted Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk as saying Wednesday during the third session of roundtable unity talks in southern city of Nikolaev.

Bengal opposition demands timely civic body polls

West Bengal’s opposition parties Wednesday demanded timely polls to 17 civic bodies and asked the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government to hold immediate discussions with the State Election Commission on the matter.

Russia to veto draft UN resolution on Syrian war

Russia will veto a draft resolution of the UN Security Council which intends to refer the Syrian civil war to the International Criminal Court, Russian UN ambassador Vitaly Churkin said here Wednesday.

The Syrian government has for long charged that regional countries are facilitating the flow of foreign jihadists into Syria to join the rebels’ battle against government forces, Xinhua reported.

Zuma elected president of South Africa

Jacob Zuma was Wednesday elected President of South Africa by members of the National Assembly.

“In terms of Item 6 of part A, Schedule A of the Constitution, I declare the honourable Jacob Zuma duly elected president of the Republic of South Africa,” Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng, who presided over the nomination process, announced.

Mogoeng congratulated Zuma as the house broke into cheers and ululations.

Zuma’s nomination came in for an objection raised by the Democratic Alliance. But the chief justice dismissed the point raised.

Magnitude-6 quake rocks India

An earthquake of magnitude 6.0 occurred in the Bay of Bengal Wednesday evening. Tremors were felt across India, but there was no tsunami warning and no reports of casualties or damage, officials said.

The quake occurred at 9.52 p.m.

“The magnitude of the earthquake was 6.0 on the Richter scale and its epicentre was in the Bay of Bengal,” said an official of the India Meteorological Department in Delhi.

People felt the tremors in Delhi too.

“Tremors were felt in Odisha and some districts of West Bengal,” the official added.

Panic grips sea resorts of Digha, Puri following quake

Panic griped the sea resorts of Puri and Digha as beds shook, water spilled onto tables and tourists rushed out to the streets from their hotels as a quake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale struck Wednesday night.

Subrata Nath, a tourist at Digha in East Midnapore district, said power supply was disrupted for a few seconds as the tremors were felt around 9.53 p.m.

“The beds suddenly started shaking. The power went off for a few seconds. All tourists poured out to the streets in panic. I saw police running. After a few minutes, we understood it was a quake.

70 children rescued from Delhi railway station

A total of 70 children were rescued from the Old Delhi Railway Station Wednesday while they were boarding a train for Punjab, police said.

The children were brought to Delhi from Raxaul in Bihar by another train.

A police team boarded the train at Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh and rescued the children while they were being shifted to the other train at the railway station.

“The children aged between eight and 16 years were being taken to Punjab on the pretext of being given jobs,” a police official said.

Finland reports two airspace violations by Russia

Finnish defence ministry said Wednesday there were two alleged violations of Finnish airspace by Russian state-owned aircraft Tuesday evening.

A “Russian state-owned” aircraft violated Finnish airspace Tuesday after 6 p.m. local time over the coast near Porvoo, a southern city of Finland about 50 km from the capital Helsinki, Xinhua quoted the ministry said.

Finnish Border Guard also detected that another “Russian state-owned” plane briefly entered Finnish airspace at 4 p.m. Tuesday over the Gulf of Finland, the ministry added.

Moscow will veto UN resolution on ICC for Syria: envoy

Russia will veto a draft UN Security Council resolution that calls for bringing Syria before the International Criminal Court, Moscow’s ambassador said today.

Vitaly Churkin dismissed the French initiative, which is to be put to a vote tomorrow, as a “publicity stunt” and said it would undermine efforts to find a political solution to the conflict in Syria.

It would be the fourth time Moscow has used its veto to block Western resolutions since the start of the conflict, three and a half years ago.
