Congress mouthpiece criticises IUML’s remarks on Rahul

The Congress mouthpiece in Kerala Thursday criticised the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), its alliance partner in the state, for blaming Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi’s “one-man show” for the rout of the UPA in the Lok Sabha election.

In an editorial, Veekshenem Daily of the Congress said it was unfortunate that a party like the IUML which has no role in national politics has made such a remark.

IUML is the second biggest partner of the ruling Congress-led UDF alliance in the state.

China, Pakistan vow to strengthen anti-terrorism co-operation

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Pakistan President Mamnoon Hussain Thursday agreed to strengthen cooperation in counter-terrorism efforts, media reported.

At a bilateral meeting, Xi said China backed Pakistan in practising a counter-terrorism strategy based on its national conditions and is willing to enhance security cooperation to safeguard the peace and stability of the two countries, Xinhua reported.

Hussain said the “East Turkistan” terrorism forces are a common enemy of Pakistan and China and vowed to make joint efforts with China to combat the terrorists.

Pakistan expects dialogue after Modi takes charge

Pakistan said it expects a “meaningful dialogue” with India after Narendra Modi is sworn in as prime minister Monday and that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will decide Thursday whether or not to attend Modi’s oath taking.

“We expect when the new government takes over… a meaningful dialogue between India and Pakistan will resume,” Foreign Office spokesperson Tasnim Aslam told the media.

She said India had invited Sharif to attend the Monday ceremony in New Delhi and the decision on it would be taken “sometime today”.

Regional parties’ clout has weakened: Omar

The Lok Sabha election result has weakened the regional parties’ in New Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said Thursday.

“It must feel so strange for regional leaders with 30 plus MPs to have no say in Delhi. Earlier they would sneeze and the centre would catch a cold,” Abdullah said on Twitter.

“Hopefully foreign policy, water sharing agreements and things like these can be dictated by what is in the national interest, now onwards,” he added.

Narendra Modi, India’s next prime minister, may sign the Teesta water sharing agreement with Bangladesh which his predecessor Manmohan Singh wanted to sign but could not because of opposition from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, a media report said here Thursday.

New Facebook app identifies, shares songs you listen to

Taking your status update a step ahead, a new Facebook app would automatically recognise the song you are listening to or the TV show you are watching and will add it to your status.

The latest version of Facebook app for iOS and Android has audio recognition feature and starts listening as soon as you start typing a new status.

The app is designed not to help you figure out what is playing but to make it as easy as possible to update your friends about what you are listening to or watching, the Verge reported.

SC rejects Srinivasan’s plea to be restored BCCI chief

BCCI president N. Srinivasan will have to continue staying away from discharging the functions as head of the cricketing body as the Supreme Court Thursday declined to entertain his plea seeking restoration of his powers.

The apex court bench of Justice B.S. Chauhan and Justice A.K. Sikri declined to hear Srinivasan’s plea saying that they would not interfere with the order passed by the other bench.

Telangana faces injustice, govt. committee rejects Omer Jaleel’s proposal

After the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh state, Telangana is facing injustice with regard to distribution of budget and staff which creates concern among officials and workers. The committee formed by the government in connection with distribution of budget, assets and staff had proposed 58 pc share to Seemandhra and 42 share to Telangana. This will lead to significant reduction of budget and staff in minority institutions of Telangana which will directly affect government schemes.

Anandiben Patel to take over as Gujarat’s first woman CM

Gujarat Revenue Minister Anandiben Patel will take over as Chief Minister of the state today.

According to media reports, the swearing in will take place at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar.

Some members of her council of ministers will also take oath today. She will succeed Narendra Modi who resigned as Chief Minister to become the Prime Minister of the country.

Anandiben Patel was elected leader of the Gujarat BJP Legislature Party in Gandhinagar yesterday.

Patel was looking after Revenue, Urban Development and Education in the present government.

Quake jolts Delhi, NCR, Chennai, parts of North, East India

A moderate earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale tonight shook Delhi, National Capital Region, Chennai and several parts of eastern and northern India but there were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage to properties.

The quake struck at a depth of 10km in the Bay of Bengal, 60 kms east of Paradip at 9.52 PM, said L S Rathore, Director General, India Meterological Department.

India Meteorological Department statement issued late tonight in Delhi said the quake measured 6.0 on the Richter scale with the epicentre at a depth of 10km in the Bay of Bengal.

US lauds Narendra Modi’s invitation to SAARC leaders From Lalit K Jha

The US today welcomed Indian government’s initiative to invite SAARC leaders to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister-elect Narendra Modi and said increased engagement between India and Pakistan is a “positive step”.

BJP calls Kejriwal”s judicial custody ‘publicity stunt’

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal of staging a drama to gain public attention after he refused to furnish bail bond of Rs 10,000 in a criminal defamation case following which he was arrested. “This is nothing but stunt and a drama and this is absolutely denigrating the judicial system. The judicial process is that anybody who has been summoned and against whom there is a case, which will be heard by the court, has to furnish a bail bond. But that bail bond, he has not agreed for that.

J&K govt takes disciplinary action against 70 employees

The Jammu and Kashmir government has initiated disciplinary action against 70 government employees for unauthorised absence from duty.

“Disciplinary action has been ordered against 70 officers and officials found absent from duty in Budgam district on May 21 (yesterday),” an official spokesman said.

The spokesman said surprise inspection of various district offices was carried out by additional District Development Commissioner Budgam and 70 employees were found unauthorisedly absent from duties.

Desecration of Holy Quran sparks tension at Mallepally

Tension gripped Mallepally after some miscreant desecrated the Holy
Quran at Mallepally. It is said that the incident occurred during ‘baraat’ a wedding procession of Mangoda community.

Some miscreants reportedly tore the pages of the Holy Quran and threw them on road amidst beating of drum during baraat procession. On learning this, the locals gathered at the spot. Habeeb Nagar police also reached the spot and removed the Holy pages from there.
