UR Ananthamurthy gets threatening calls from NaMo Brigade for anti-Modi comments

An award-winning Indian writer has been receiving threatening calls for criticising India”s PM-elect Narendra Modi.

A few months ago, UR Ananthamurthy had said that he would leave the country if Modi became India’s PM. The Kannada language writer told the BBC that he made the anti-Modi comments out of frustration, which he later retracted. After Modi’s landslide victory in the election results, a Hindu hardline group, which calls itself NaMo Brigade, said Ananthamurthy should go to Pakistan.

Pakistan should formulate effective laws to discourage the forced conversion of Hindu girls on the pretext of marriage.

The comments were made by a Hindu member of the National Assembly while requesting the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII), which is a constitutional body responsible for giving legal advice on Islamic issues to the Government of Pakistan and the Parliament.

US deploys 80 military personnel to Nigeria to search for abducted school girls

The United States has deployed about 80 military personnel to help Nigerian military find more than 200 schoolgirls kidnapped by Islamist militant group Boko Haram.

In a letter to Congress, President Barack Obama said that the troops were deployed in Chad as part of effort to help Nigeria find the abducted schoolgirls. Obama said that these personnel will support the operation of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance aircraft for missions over northern Nigeria and the surrounding area.

Anandiben Patel to take over as Gujarat”s first woman CM today

Gujarat Revenue Minister Anandiben Patel will take over as Chief Minister of the state today. According to media reports, the swearing in will take place at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar. Some members of her council of ministers will also take oath today.

She will succeed Narendra Modi who resigned as Chief Minister to become the Prime Minister of the country. No decision on Tarun Gogoi, says Congress

No decision has been taken by the Congress high command on the resignation offer by Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, a party leader said here Thursday.

“He (Gogoi) expressed his desire to step down, but no decision has been taken. The legislators of Assam will decide on it,” said C.P. Joshi, Congress general secretary in charge of Assam.

Joshi said the meeting between Gogoi and Congress president Sonia Gandhi was to apprise the latter about the political situation in the state.

Jayalalithaa faults Modi for inviting Rajapaksa

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa Thursday termed as “unfortunate” the invitation extended to Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa to attend the swearing-in ceremony of India’s new prime minister Narendra Modi.

“We had hoped that the new government … would be sympathetic to the cause of Tamils and friendly to Tamil Nadu,” Jayalalithaa said here in a statement.

She said the “unfortunate move” of inviting Rajapaksa “has deeply upset the people of Tamil Nadu and wounded their sentiments all over again.

Sonia Gandhi quits as Chairperson of NMML

Congress President Sonia Gandhi has resigned from the Chairpersonship of Nehru Memorial Museum and Library.

She also quit from the membership of the government’s National Committee on the Commemoration of the 125th birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, AICC sources said.

This Committee was chaired by outgoing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

A National Committee was constituted under the Chairmanship of Singh to consider policies and lay down guidelines for commemoration events.

Accusing Aam Aadmi Party of resorting to “theatrics” to “mislead” people, Congress today questioned why party leader Yogendra Yadav furnished a personal bond of Rs 5,000 when Arvind Kejriwal had refused to do so in a criminal defamation case.

Calling Kejriwal’s refusal to furnish a bail bond to avoid arrest as a “pure drama”, DPCC Chief spokesperson Mukesh Sharma said the AAP leader was trying to get people’s sympathy by preferring to go to jail but it did not work.

Jails, Tourism and Culture Minister Swaran Singh Phillaur said he has submitted his resignation to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in New Delhi following the recent controversy.

In a statement here, Phillaur said he was quitting on “moral grounds” while he also claimed that the allegations made against his family member were baseless and false.

Delhi government fined Rs.2 lakh for not creating awareness about sex crimes

The Delhi High Court has imposed a fine of Rs. 2 lakh on the Delhi government for “showing insensitivity” in sensitising people and creating mass awareness about laws dealing with sexual offences and punishments for them.

A division bench of Justice Kailash Gambhir and Justice Sunita Gupta expressed displeasure at the conduct of the Delhi government as no counsel appeared to represent it and for showing apathy towards an issue of public importance concerning the welfare of women and children.

The bench asked the government to deposit Rs. 2 lakh with the Nirbhaya Fund within a week.

Tributes paid to soldier killed in Jammu gunfight

A wreath-laying ceremony was Thursday held in Pune to honour a soldier killed while fighting terrorists on the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir May 18, an army official said.

Sepoy Bhikale Uttam Balu of the Maratha Light Infantry was killed near the LoC in Nathua Tibba area of Akhnoor sector in Jammu district.

A ceremony was held in Pune, Maharashtra, Thursday where homage was paid to the mortal remains of the soldier, defence spokesman Col. Manish Mehta told IANS in Jammu.

Russia developing manned space programme to replace ISS

Russia is developing a national programme of manned space explorations which will replace the International Space Station (ISS) programme after 2020, the Russian federal space agency, Roscosmos, said Thursday.

“The development of the national strategy of manned spaceflight is under way now. Along with the Russian Academy of Sciences and the industrial sector, we are preparing a certain concept beyond the ISS,” Roscosmos Deputy Chief Sergei Savelyev told reporters at the 18th St Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Manish Sisodia’s father dead

Captain Dharam Pal Singh, father of former Delhi minister Manish Sisodia, died after a heart attack at Hapur in Uttar Pradesh, the Aam Aadmi Party leader said. He was 86.

“He died at 5 a.m. today (Thursday). He had a heart attack,” Sisodia told IANS.

“He was fit. He used to go on walks and meet people” he said.

Plea against AAP’s power bills waiver disposed

The Delhi High Court Thursday disposed of a plea filed against the erstwhile Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP government’s decision to give 50 percent waiver on pending power bills of 24,036 consumers.

The consumers had stopped payment of their dues during their Aam Aadmi Party’s “bijli satyagraha”, from October 2012 to December 2013.

Chinese firm to develop Nepal’s second international airport

The Nepal government Thursday signed an agreement with a Chinese company for developing the second international airport in the Himalayan country.

Ratish Chandra Lal Suman, chief of Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), the aviation regulatory body in the country, and Luo Yan, chairman and president of China CAMC Engineering Co., signed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) at the CAAN office in Kathmandu, Xinhua reported.

With this, construction of Pokhara Regional International Airport is set to start.
