Businessman to pay Rs 10K maintenance to wife and daughter

A government bank official has been asked by a Delhi court to pay Rs 10,000 a month to his estranged wife and daughter to take care of themselves.

The mahila court ordered the bank official to pay maintenance to his wife, observing that “it is a settled law that an able bodied man is legally and morally bound to maintain his wife and children.”

Govt working with social media to prevent misuse of

Admitting to difficulties in identifying people using websites to spread communal hatred, government today said it was working with social networking sites to create an institutional mechanism to prevent misuse of technology.

Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal said some social networking websites have agreed to share user information with the government but there were some procedural issues involved.

Cloudy morning in Delhi, rains in store

It was a cloudy day in the national capital on Wednesday with minimum temperature a notch below average at 25.2 degrees Celsius. The Met office has forecast rains.

“The sky will remain cloudy and rains are expected later in the day. Some parts of the city may see heavy rains,” said an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The maximum temperature is likely to hover around 30 degrees Celsius.

From 5.30 pm Tuesday till 8.30 am Wednesday, the city received 28.4 mm of rain, IMD said. Humidity was 86 percent at 8.30 am.

Mumbai cop offers rose to Raj Thackeray, attacks police chief

An emotionally charged Mumbai Police constable offered a rose to Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray shortly after the latter’s rally at Azad Maidan Tuesday evening.

Constable Pramod Tawade, who was posted on security duty, was apparently moved by Thackeray’s speech expressing solidarity with the police personnel and media persons who were attacked during the Aug 11 Muslim groups’ protests against violence in Assam.

Soon after Thackeray’s speech, Tawade walked on to the stage and offered the MNS chief a rose and expressed gratitude to him for boosting his morale.

Woman branded a witch, beaten up in Rajasthan

A 50-year old woman in Rajasthan’s Ajmer district approached the police Tuesday accusing her neighbours of branding her a witch and beating up her and her daughter, officials said.

A first information report (FIR) has been registered against some half a dozen people on the basis of the complaint of Bhuri Devi, a resident of Kajipur village near Kekari town in the district, some 150 km from Jaipur, they added.

Odisha, Jharkhand to intensity anti-mineral smuggling drive

Odisha and its neighbouring state of Jharkhand have said that they will jointly intensify crackdown against the mineral smuggling across their borders.

Speaking to reporters after the second inter-state coordination meeting held Tuesday to check theft of minerals including iron ore, the home secretaries of Odisha and Jharkhand mentioned about their plans and ongoing efforts.

“We have adopted some IT (Information and Technology) based solution. We are also working on some other measures,” said Odisha Home Secretary U.N. Behera.

Unverified news reports demoralising forces: Mumbai Police

The Mumbai Police has strongly objected to broadcast of “unverified” news reports by a section of the electronic media in connection with the Azad Maidan violence, saying such reportage demoralised the police force.

In a communication to Union Home Secretary R K Singh, the Mumbai Police said several unverified news were telecast by a section of the media while reporting the incident of violence following a protest at Azad Maidan in Mumbai on August 11.

The communication cited a few news reports which were telecast by some media houses without verifying the truth.

Over 2,000 visiting Pakistani nationals overstaying in Nagpur

Over 2,000 Pakistani nationals are overstaying since 1995 in Nagpur despite the expiry of their visitors visa, a RTI query has found.

As many as 9,705 Pakistani nationals had obtained visa for visiting Nagpur from the authorities for 30, 45, 60 and 90 days. “About 2,546 Pakistan citizens came on visa for longer duration and 533 of them were provided with Indian citizenship,” it said.

But about 2013 Pakistani nationals did not return to their country and were overstaying here, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Branch), which deals with such cases.

Be cautious of rumour mongers: Bukhari

In the backdrop of the exodus of people belonging to northeast, a prominent Muslim cleric today appealed to people to be cautious about rumours and try not to spread them.

“I appeal to Muslims of India to be cautious of mischievous rumour mongers. Try and control spreading them. Don’t listen to the rumours spread by others,” Syed Ahmed Bukhari, Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, told reporters here after Eid prayers .

He said this is in our best interest to not listen to evil wishers who want to destroy our community.

Season’s heaviest rain halts Delhi

The season’s heaviest downpour in the national capital on Tuesday morning left thousands stranded for hours in traffic jams as many parts of the city were waterlogged. The Met office has forecast more showers.

The city received 54.5 mm of rain till 8.30 a.m., the season’s highest so far, an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said.

“The sky will remain generally cloudy. Some spells of rain are likely in some parts of the city. Some places may see heavy showers,” the official said.

Pakistani son gives new life to mother on his birthday

A Pakistani son’s donation of his liver to his mother has left the woman cured of cirrhosis, doctors at Sir Gangaram Hospital here said Sunday.

“A team of 21 people including doctors and other staff of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital successfully transplanted the liver of her son in the Pakistani woman, Zaib Un Nisa, curing her of cirrhosis of liver August 14,” said Associate Director, Hepatobiliary and liver transplant department of the hospital, Dr Naimish N. Mehta.

Geetika suicide: Gopal Kanda may undergo brain mapping test

New Delhi: Delhi Police today appeared mulling the option of brain mapping test on former Haryana Minister Gopal Kanda who is refusing to cooperate in the probe in connection with the Geetika Sharma suicide case.

Kanda had on Saturday morning surrendered before police after evading arrest for ten days. Sharma, a former employee of his now defunct MDLR airline, accused him and another senior colleague Aruna Chaddha of harassing her.

Police sources said Kanda has been evasive during questioning and denied any involvement with 23-year-old Sharma.

Delhi celebrates Eid with feasting and fervour

It was a day of prayers, feasting and togetherness Monday as Muslims in the national capital celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr, marking the end of the holy month of Ramzan.

The traditional greeting of “Eid Mubarak” echoed all around as, dressed in their finest, thousands of Muslims gathered at mosques all over the city. The centrepiece was the historic Jama Masjid in the walled city.

Six killed in Nepal road accident

At least six people have been killed and 42 others injured in a truck-bus collision on the East-West Highway in Nawalparasi in western Nepal late Sunday.

According to website myrepublica.com, the bus, en-route to Mahendranagar from the capital Kathmandu, collided with a truck with Indian registration plate coming from the opposite direction, Xinhua reported.

The injured are undergoing treatment. However, the deceased have not been identified yet, police said.

Kashmiri separatist leaders placed under house arrest

Authorities Monday placed all senior Kashmiri separatist leaders under house arrest to maintain law and order during the congregational Eid prayers in Srinagar.

“These measures have been taken to ensure that nobody disturbs peace and tranquility in the city on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr,” a police official said.

Those placed under house arrest include Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Shabir Shah, Muhammad Yasin Malik and Muhammad Nayeem Khan among others.

Patil appeals to northeast people against leaving Maha

Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil assured foolproof security to the northeastern people in the state and appealed to them not to fall prey to rumours.

“Some rumour-mongers are trying to create panic using social media about impending attacks on northeast natives in the wake of Assam violence. But I appeal to them not to leave for their home states as the state government is committed towards providing security to them and is standing firmly behind them,” Patil said.

Govt blocks 80 internet pages, user-accounts

Government is learnt to have ordered blocking of 80 more Internet pages and user-accounts on Sunday on social networking sites including Facebook, Google and Twitter to avoid panic among people of northeastern region living across India.

All these sites were found hosting inflammatory and hateful content, spreading rumours and inciting violence targeting the people from north-east, government sources said.
