Delhi crime graph up by 40 percent

There has been a 43.6 percent increase in Delhi’s crime graph in 2013 over 2012, Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi said Friday.

A total of 73,958 cases were registered in 2013, up from 51,479 in the previous year.

“Strict instructions have been given to police stations that each and every complaint be registered and not to turn away people,” Bassi told the media. “This is why (the number of) cases has increased.”(IANS)

Dhir elected Delhi assembly speaker

M.S. Dhir of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was Friday elected speaker of the Delhi assembly, defeating BJP’s Jagdish Mukhi.

Dhir won with the backing of his own party, the Congress, the Janata Dal-United and an independent in the 70-member house.

Mukhi got the support of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Akali Dal.

Dhir’s election came a day after Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal proved his majority in the assembly.

A legislator from Jangpura, Dhir defeated Tarvinder Singh Marwah of the Congress by 1,744 votes in the Delhi election.(IANS)

Law student withdraws complaint against Kejriwal

A law student Thursday withdrew his plea for registering a case against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for allegedly lowering the reputation of parliament.

The plea was filed in a Delhi court by Vibhor Anand, who sought directions from the court to register a case against Kejriwal, yoga guru Baba Ramdev and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) member and lawyer Prashant Bhushan.

Anand said Kejriwal made an objectionable speech at a rally in Ghaziabad in February 2012, with malafide intention to lower the reputation of parliament.

Plea in Delhi HC against Kejriwal over false promises

A public interest litigation was Thursday filed in the Delhi High Court seeking directions to the CBI to register a case of cheating and corruption against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for misleading citizens by making “false promises in election manifesto”.

The case is likely to come for hearing Jan 8 before a bench headed by Chief Justice N.V. Ramana.

The PIL was filed by advocate M.L. Sharma against the chief minister, Education Minister Manish Sisodia and the Aam Aadmi Party.

Nursery admissions: Delhi government helpline soon

The Delhi government Monday said it would soon launch a helpline for nursery admissions for which parents have to run from pillar to post.

“We will launch the helpline so parents don’t get confused during their children’s admissions in nursery schools,” Delhi’s Education Minister Manish Sisodia told reporters.

He said the helpline would be directly under his control.

Every year, parents face a harrowing time during nursery admissions.

Don’t take hasty decisions, Congress tells AAP

The Congress Thursday warned the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government against taking hasty decisions that may ultimately “hurt” the national capital’s residents.

“The party should stop taking decisions in haste that may ultimately end up hurting the people of Delhi. Such decisions will halt developmental issues,” Congress’ Arvinder Singh Lovely said in the Delhi assembly.

Harsh Vardhan questions AAP on support from Congress

BJP leader Harsh Vardhan Thursday questioned the Aam Aadmi Party as to what “compelled” the debutant political entity to form a government in Delhi with the Congress party’s support.

“When his (Arvind Kejriwal’s) party emerged, people of this country saw new hope. Though the party emerged due to Anna Hazare’s movement, Anna Hazare decided to stay out of politics,” said BJP’s chief ministerial candidate Harsh Vardhan during a debate on the trust vote in the Delhi assembly.

Delhi Government to install new night shelters

Taking stock of the chilly weather prevailing in the Capital, the Delhi Government on Wednesday announced its decision to install new night shelters, and convert the old ones into the porta cabin night shelters.

Addressing a press conference, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced, “The weather is very chilly here and it is a duty of any government to take care of people who are unprivileged. So we had a discussion on this issue and we have taken several decisions on it.

New Year’s night sees 724 drivers ticketed in Delhi

A total of 724 motorists were ticketed in Delhi for violating traffic norms while five of them had to go behind bars for haphazard driving during the New Year celebrations.

Of these motorists, 67 were challaned (issued tickets) for dangerous driving and 532 prosecuted for drunken driving Tuesday night.

A total 238 car drivers, 265 mobike riders and 12 people plying auto-rickshaws were prosecuted for violating traffic rules.

Cool, pleasant New Year’s Day in Delhi (Lead)

The New Year’s Day Wednesday was cool but pleasant in Delhi with the maximum temperature two notches below average at 18.2 degrees Celsius. Thursday is expected to see similar weather.

The Met Office has forecast there will be shallow fog in the morning and partly cloudy sky will give way to a clear sky Thursday. “The maximum and minimum temperature Thursday would be around 19 and 9 degrees Celsius respectively,” said an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official.

NSUI, Youth Congress activists protest near BJP chief Rajnath Singh’s house

Activists of the Youth Congress and the National Students Union of India (NSUI) were baton charged by Delhi Police on Wednesday, as they sought to undertake a protest march towards the official residence of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh.

Media reports said that between 40 to 50 Youth Congress and NSUI protesters were taken into custody and moved to the Parliament Street Police Station, as the demonstration took a turn for the worse.

The first session of the newly elected Delhi Assembly began here on Wednesday afternoon with Pro-tem Speaker Mateen Ahmad in the chair.

The session will come to end on January 7.

On the first day of the session, newly elected MLAs took oath to perform their responsibilities in good faith and to uphold the Constitution of India.

The Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party government will also seek a vote of confidence on the floor of the assembly during this period.

The election of the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker has been fixed for January 3.

Kejriwal, others take oath as legislators

The newly sworn-in Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Wednesday took oath as a member of the Delhi legislative assembly when it met for the first time after last month’s elections.

Congress leader Mateen Ahmed, who was named pro-tem speaker, administered the oath to Kejriwal.

Urban Development Minister Manish Sisodia took oath after Kejriwal. Both of them, however, left the house soon after taking oath.

The other five ministers – Rakhi Birla, Girish Soni, Satendra Jain, Saurabh Bharadwaj and Somnath Bharti – also took oath.

They were followed by other legislators.

Decision on audit of power companies Wednesday: Kejriwal

The final decision on the audit of power companies in the national capital will be taken Wednesday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said.

“The power companies were supposed to send their replies by (Wednesday) noon, the final decision will be taken today,” he told reporters outside Delhi assembly.

Kejriwal, who took oath as chief minister Saturday, fulfilled his second major election promise Tuesday, reducing power tariff through subsidy, a move expected to benefit an estimated 28 lakh households.

Congress’s Mateen Ahmed is Delhi’s pro-tem speaker

Congress legislator Mateen Ahmed will be the pro-tem speaker of the Delhi assembly, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said Tuesday.

“We proposed his (Ahmed’s) name… he will be the pro-tem speaker,” Kejriwal told reporters.

The names of Bharatiya Janata Party leader Jagdish Mukhi and Janata Dal-United legislator Shoaib Iqbal were also proposed but both of them declined, Kejriwal said.

The pro-tem speaker administers the oath to all newly-elected legislators and presides over the assembly until a new speaker is elected.

Delhi cuts power tariff by half

The Delhi government Tuesday cut power tariff by half, benefiting an estimated 28 lakh households.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said the new rates would be applicable to those consuming up to 400 units of power a month.

“They will get 50 percent subsidy,” he said, adding that this would benefit some 28 of the 34 lakh households in Delhi.

Delhi has chilly New Year’s eve, cold day ahead (Second Lead)

It was a chilly New Year’s eve Tuesday in the national capital with the minimum temperature settling three notches below average at 4 degrees Celsius. The Met Office has forecast a foggy, cold New Year’s day.

“A partly cloudy sky is likely to become clear during the day. Some fog is expected in the morning,” said an official of the India Meteorological Department.

Tuesday’s maximum temperature was recorded three notches below average at 17.6 degrees Celsius.

The national capital recorded rainfall of 6.4 mm since Monday.

Kejriwal meets CAG over audit of power companies

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Tuesday met the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) over holding audit of power distribution companies in the capital.

Though a doctor Tuesday morning said the chief minister was still running fever and suffering from diarrhoea, Kejriwal held meetings to deliver on the Aam Aadmi Party’s promise of cheaper power for the national capital.

“Attempts are being made so our government falls. We do not know if our government will survive or not. We feel we have only 48 hours to serve the people,” said Kejriwal, who missed office Monday.

Metro museum celebrates fifth anniversary

The Delhi Metro museum Tuesday celebrated its fifth anniversary. A touch screen information system was unveiled on the occasion.

Set up at the Patel Chowk Metro station, the touch screen information system comprises of a touch screen kiosk along with a 65 inch high definition monitor, where visitors will be able to watch informational films on various aspects related to the Metro.

“The idea behind this museum is to exhibit our work. We wanted to give out information and share new developments,” said Anuj Dayal, DMRC executive director for corporate communications.

Rains in Delhi intensify cold wave

Cold wave conditions have been further intensified in the national capital as light rain lashed most part of the city last night.

According to the Met. Department, the city has received 6.4 degree milimetres rainfall till 5.30 a.m.

The minimum temperature was recorded 11.6 Celsius and the maximum settled at 19.7 degree Cselsius.

The weatherman has predicted for partly cloudy sky with light rain in some parts of the city during next 24 hours. (ANI)

Kejriwal sick, misses office Tuesday too

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will not attend office Tuesday too as he is still unwell.

“Arvind still has fever and his diarrhoea continues. Now his blood pressure has also gone down,” said Vipin Mittal, Kejriwal’s family doctor.

“So I have advised him to take rest at home today (Tuesday),” added Mittal.

It is the third day since swearing in as the chief minister that Kejriwal has not been able to attend office.(IANS)

Chilly New Year’s Eve in Delhi, rain likely

Delhi continued to be chilly on New Year’s Eve Tuesday, with the minimum temperature recorded at 4 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season’s average. The weatherman has forecast light rain during the day.

“The day will remain cloudy with light rain expected,” said an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Even though the temperature Tuesday was a little higher than Monday’s lowest of 2.4 degrees Celsius, some people were disappointed that it was going to be a chilly New Year’s Eve, while some were excited about it.

Ensure free 700 litres water for all Delhiites: Congress

Shortly after the Delhi government announced provision of 700 litres of free water per day to every household with a water connection, the Congress Monday questioned the move and said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal should ensure that every citizen gets the facility.

“He had promised that all citizens of Delhi would get free water. But around 50 percent of Delhi does not get water at all. He should ensure that every citizen of Delhi gets free 700 litres of water per day,” Congress spokesperson Sandeep Dikshit told reporters.
