Delhi govt trains 110 volunteers to inspect shelter homes

The Delhi government has trained over 100 volunteers to carry out inspections of shelter homes in various parts of the city, in the wake of death of six homeless persons on the streets allegedly due to cold.

There are at present 210 shelter homes run by the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board.

The 110 volunteers which include office goers, business professionals and college students have been given a complete check list.

Jains get minority status

The Jain community was Monday granted minority status by the central government which will enable them to avail benefits in government schemes and programmes.

The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting here, an official release here said.

The decision comes a day after Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi took up this issue with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

A group of Jains had met Rahul Gandhi Sunday to press for their long-standing demand for minority status and he then spoke to the prime minister.

Two Metro stations to shut Tuesday

In a bid to foil a mass protest called by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), two metro station in the heart of the capital will remain shut from 6 to 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The decision follows a request from security forces, a metro official said.

On Monday, the authorities shut down four metro stations including Udyog Bhawan and Patel Chowk from 9 a.m. to prevent AAP supporters from reaching the site where Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal staged a sit-in protest.

Delhi government volunteers to visit night shelters

More than 110 volunteers of the Delhi government will visit the night shelters here and ensure they are in a proper condition to tackle the chilly winter, said , state government official Praveen Deshmukh said Monday.

The volunteers, well trained by the Delhi government, will visit all the 210 night shelters to ensure they have basic the amenities needed to survive the extremely cold nights.

“The volunteers will also check the living conditions and make sure if all the facilities are being provided to those staying in the shelters,” he said.

Controversy over Ugandan official’s letter to AAP

A controversy erupted Monday over a purported letter handed over by a Ugandan High Commission “official” to Delhi Law Minister Somnath Bharti, with the external affairs ministry revealing that the Ugandan mission staff are not in town and “not to give credence to rumours”.

External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid told reporters that he felt “sad at the way it (Aam Aadmi Party) is playing with India’s relations” with other countries.

Tribal panel asked to ascertain Mukul Sangma’s status

The Supreme Court Monday asked the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes to verify the veracity of the schedule tribe status of Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma which has been contested by an NGO in the northeastern state.

As NGO All North East Indigenous Garo Law Promoters Association and another petitioner challenged the tribal status of Sangma on the grounds of his non-tribal mother, a bench of Chief Justice P. Sathasivasm, Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice M.Y.Eqbal asked the tribal panel to look into the authenticity of the allegation.

Delhi Police stops Kejriwal from protesting outside Shinde’s office

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who was heading towards Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde’s office for a dharna demanding action against Delhi Police, was stopped by the police at Rail Bhavan on Monday.

The party is demanding action against Delhi Police personnel for alleged dereliction of duty.

Four Metro stations closed ahead of protest by AAP

Four Metro stations near the North block will be closed today from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. ahead of a protest by the Aam Aadmi Party to demand action against Delhi Police personnel for alleged dereliction of duty.

“As advised by Delhi Police, Patel Chowk, Central Sect, Udyog Bhawan and Race Course Metro stations will remain closed today from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in wake of dharna by AAP at North block,” a DMRC spokesperson said.

Police register FIR in ‘midnight raid’ case

Delhi Police today registered an FIR against unknown persons following a complaint of harassment by some African women by a group shortly after Law Minister Somnath Bharti accused the foreign nationals of indulging in drugs and prostitution.

The FIR was lodged at Malviya Nagar Police Station following a direction by a city court. Bharti’s name is not mentioned in the FIR.

Metropolitan Magistrate Chetna Singh had earlier directed that video footage of the incident in south Delhi last week be shown to the foreign nationals for identification.

Court directs police to slap FIR against Bharti

A court has directed Delhi Police to lodge a FIR against Delhi Law Minister Somnath Bharti for allegedly entering the house of some African women here. The minister denied the charge.

Metropolitan Magistrate Chetna Singh has told police to file charges of mischief, trespassing and criminal intimidation against Bharti after hearing a plea filed by the Africans, a police officer said.

The minister had reached the house last week following complaints from residents of the area in south Delhi that they were part of a prostitution and drug ring.

CBI registers five cases against Delhi Jal Board

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered five cases against 13 officials of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) for alleged irregularities in the supply of equipments for sewage treatment plants.

Of the 13 officials, eight are executive engineers and five are junior engineers.

A CBI spokesperson said searches were conducted at 21 locations in Delhi, Ghaziabad and Noida before the cases were filed.

DJB officials allegedly conspired with a private firm to cheat the government to the tune of six crore rupees by supplying spurious and cheap items.

American School in Delhi not run by Embassy: US

The American Embassy School in New Delhi, which is being accused by the Indian government of violating visa and local laws, is not run by the US mission, a senior State Department official has said.

However, the US is talking with India at the diplomatic level to address concerns of the Indian Government in this regard, the official said.

Reacting to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal charges that the Delhi Police is ‘highly compromised’, Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi on Thursday said the police is capable enough to protect the public.

“I want to assure all the people that Delhi Police is there for your help. We are here to ensure that the people are safe,” Bassi told media here today.

Earlier today, Kejriwal blamed the Delhi Police for rising cases of rapes in the city, saying the police is highly compromised.

Fog affects flight operations at Delhi’s IGI airport

Flight operations at the IGI airport here was partially affected today after dense fog enveloped the city.

Five flights, two domestic and three internationals, were diverted, eight cancelled and over 100 arriving and departing were delayed by over 15 minutes, airport officials said.

Fog started to envelope the airport around midnight last night and become dense between 12.30 AM and 3.30 AM. The visibility on all the runways dropped.

Delhi Police ‘highly compromised’, says Kejriwal

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Thursday said Delhi Police are “highly compromised” and if any crime is prevented in the national capital it is not because of the police force but rather god’s grace.

“The security of the people has been left to god and whatever little crime incidents are not happening is not because of Delhi Police but despite them,” Kejriwal said following the recent incidents of grave crimes against women, including the rape Tuesday of a 51-year-old Danish tourist by a gang of vagabonds.

Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh Lovely Thursday lashed out at the Aam Aadmi Party government over its handling of the rape case of the 51-year-old Danish woman in the capital.

“Is this the same party that used to protest on the streets of Delhi? And today, the party’s chief minister is saying that he will get a study conducted to know why such cases are happening. Now he is thinking of studies when the responsibility falls on him,” Lovely said, referring to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Kejriwal warns Delhi Police

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Thursday asked police to suspend four of its officers for allegedly refusing to act against sex and drug gangs and in a case of burning a woman.

“We are demanding… we are warning Delhi Police,” Kejriwal told the media, using unusually harsh language for a chief minister. “Delhi Police is highly compromised.”

He demanded the suspension of the station house officers (SHO) of the Sagarpur and Malviya Nagar police stations and two assistant commissioners of police.

AAP minister Somnath Bharti accuses Delhi Police of negligence after late night raid

Delhi Law Minister Somnath Bharti carried out raids in South Delhi’s Khirki Extension late night on Wednesday and is reported to have had a brush with the local police.

Bharti and his supporters alleged that a sex trade and drug peddling racket was flourishing in the locality with the help of foreign nationals, mostly Nigerians.

Bharti had a hot argument with an assistant commissioner of police, even as his supporters created a lot of commotion.

Bharti demanded that the police take action against the offenders.
