Over 3,000 heavy vehicle drivers prosecuted in Delhi

Over 3,000 heavy vehicle drivers were prosecuted for rash and dangerous driving in the city during the night hours, Delhi Police said Thursday.

A total of 3,265 commercial transport vehicle drivers were prosecuted, and of these 2,100 faced action for dangerous and rash driving during a six-day drive launched by Delhi Police from April 18.

Delhi BJP asks Lt Governor to ban sale of junk food in schools

Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan today urged Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung to ban sale of junk food from all government and private schools in the national capital for the “good health” of children, following a High Court observation.

The court yesterday had directed for a list to be prepared segregating healthy food items from that of eatables which have high fat, sugar and salt contents.

Jung expresses concern over sanitation in schools

Delhi’s Lt Governor Najeeb Jung today expressed his concern over cleanliness and sanitation in schools, particularly of toilets.

Voicing special concern about girls’ toilets in schools, Jung said, “The doors of the toilets must have proper bolts and the toilets must be properly functional by the time the schools reopen.”

During a review meeting, Jung today directed the Education department to run a special drive this summer to ensure that the upkeep of toilets and school premises is improved once the schools reopen.

Clear day ahead in Delhi

It will be a clear Wednesday in Delhi with a minimum temperature of 21.6 degrees Celsius, two notches below the season’s average.

“The sky will remain clear throughout the day,” said an official of the Indian Meteorological Department.

The maximum temperature will hover around 36 degrees Celsius.

Humidity recorded at 8.30 a.m. was 48 percent.

Tuesday was warm with a maximum temperature of 36 degrees Celsius, two notches below the season’s average, while the minimum temperature settled down at 20.4 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season’s average.

Delhi records first two dengue cases in 2014

The national capital has registered its first two cases of dengue this year, municipal official said Tuesday.

The two cases were reported from the north zone last weekend.

Last year, six people died due to the vector-borne disease and a total of 5,546 cases were reported from the national capital and adjoining areas.

‘Won’t assume Delhi CM post until AAP gets easy majority’

Defending his decision of resigning as the Delhi Chief Minister, AAP leader Arvid Kejriwal has said his “soul did not allow me” to continue and that he will “not think” of assuming the post until his party gets easy majority to run the state government on their own terms.

On being asked if he would accept the role of Chief Minister in Delhi again, Kejriwal said “Not until we get easy majority to run the government on our own without any pressure.”

SC clears way for land acquisition for Jamia

Clearing the decks for the expansion of Jamia Millia Islamia, the Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed the Delhi government to acquire about 107 bighas (approximately 26 hectares) of prime land in Okhla village in south Delhi.

The case pertains to 214 bighas of land in Okhla village that Delhi government
wanted to acquire for the expansion of the 92-year-old university, one of India’s oldest.

The city government had initiated the process a few months ago, but the Uttar Pradesh government objected to this, contending the land belonged to the state.

90 percent of people would have to migrate from India to Pakistan if one were to follow Giriraj Singh, says Meem Afzal

Congress leader Meem Afzal on Sunday stated that what Giriraj Singh of the BJP has said would amount to sending 90 percent of people out of India to Pakistan.

“Those who say that people who do not support Modi will be sent to Pakistan, does that mean they are going to send the non NDA leaders to Pakistan. If they were to do so then 90 percent of Indians will have to sent to Pakistan,” Afzal said.

“The Election Commission must take cognisance of this matter and send Giriraj Singh to jail,” Afzal added.

Warm Sunday in Delhi, cloudy Monday likely

The national capital experienced a clear, warm weekend with the maximum temperature Sunday recorded 33.3 degree Celsius, four notches below the season’s average. Monday is expected to be cloudy but as warm.

The maximum and the minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 34 degrees and 19 degree Celsius.

“Skies will be mainly clear in the morning, becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon,” said an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The minimum temperature Sunday settled at 19.2 degrees Celsius, two notches below the season’s average.

Delhi cops take custody of Safdar Nagori in 2001 case

A team of Delhi police today took custody of alleged mastermind of 2008 serial bomb blasts in Gujarat, Safdar Nagori, who has been lodged in Sabarmati central jail since 2008 in connection with a 13-year-old case.

Confirming the developments, special cell police inspector of Delhi police Shiv Kumar told media that Nagori was wanted by them in a thirteen-year-old case.

Minor fire outside Delhi Metro station

A minor fire broke out Saturday outside the busy Rajiv Chowk Metro station, which affected train services for a few minutes, fire officials said.

A fire alarm was sounded and the station, which is a main interchange, was closed.

Officials said the fire started on a floor mat outside the station but the reason behind it was still to be ascertained.

Four fire tenders rushed to the spot and doused the fire in a few minutes.

The national capital experienced a cloudy Saturday with the maximum temperature recorded six notches below the season’s average at 31 degrees Celsius. Sunday is also expected to be cloudy.

“The sky will be mainly clear, becoming partly cloudy by the afternoon,” said an official of the India Meteorological Department.

The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 33 degrees and 19 degrees Celsius respectively.

Saturday’s minimum temperature was recorded at 18 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season’s average.

Rain likely in Delhi

It was a cloudy Saturday morning in Delhi with a minimum temperature of 20 degrees Celsius, one notch below the season’s average. The Met Office has forecast rainfall in the day.

“The sky will remain cloudy throughout the day. A few places in the city might get rainfall,” said an official of the India Meteorological Department.

The maximum temperatures is likely to hover around 31 degrees Celsius.

Friday’s maximum temperature was recorded two notches below the season’s average at 31 degrees Celsius, while the minimum was 18 degrees Celsius, two notches below the season’s average.

Move to hand over Delhi Metro security to Delhi Police

In order to strengthen security in Delhi Metro, government is considering a proposal to hand over the responsibility to Delhi Police.

“We have submitted a proposal to Home Ministry recommending handing over security responsibility of Delhi Metro network to Delhi Police,” a senior Urban Development Ministry official said.

The official said because law and order is a state subject it should be the responsibility of state government.

Innovative research work at IIT-Delhi Open House

Waterless urinal technology, a wood cane crusher and a solar powered refrigeration system are some technologies that will be displayed at IIT-Delhi’s Open House 2014.

The open house, to be organised April 19 within the institute, will provide an insight into the research work, student projects and the advanced facilities available at the institute.

The event is a platform to exhibit path-breaking technical projects.

Complete drain de-silting work by May 15: Jung

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung Wednesday instructed senior state officials and municipal commissioners to finish de-silting of drains by May 15 and buckle up before the monsoon sets in.

“The preparations must start much in advance so the government is ready to deal with flooding and water-logging during the monsoon by the middle of May,” said Jung in a statement.

He also instructed officials to gear up to tackle floods in Yamuna river and cloudbursts and heavy rainfall during the monsoon.

Light rain expected in Delhi Thursday

It was a warm Wednesday in the national capital and the maximum temperature was recorded two notches below the season’s average at 34.2 degrees Celsius. Light rains are expected Thursday, the Met office said.

“The sky will be partly cloudy Thursday. One or two spells of light rain or thunderstorms could occur in some areas,” said an official of the India Meteorological Department.

The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 33 and 18 degrees Celsius.

Najeeb Jung reviews facilities at LNJP Hospital

Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung on Tuesday visited the LNJP Hospital and inspected the medical and infrastructural facilities at the hospital.

He spent almost two hours at the hospital hearing the concerns of the patients, doctors and hospital staff. He visited the emergency block, diabetes unit, dialysis centre, casualty wing, OPDs etc as part of his visit.

During his visit, Jung was apprised that LNJP has one of the largest haemophilia centres in the country besides other super speciality facilities.

NHRC asks Delhi to explain fire deaths at old age home

The National Human Rights Commission Tuesday asked the Delhi government to explain what caused a fire at a old age home leaving two inmates dead.

Delhi’s chief secretary and commissioner of police have been asked for a detailed report in the matter within four weeks, said a NHRC official.

The centre, being run by a NGO, was housed in makeshift tents where fire broke out, killing Ramesh Chand, 60, and 27-year-old Poonam who was dumb, the comission said citing media reports.

The incident was reported late on April 3 at Vasant Kunj in south Delhi.

“The sky will be partly cloudy, with a possibility of one or two spells of very light rain or thunderstorm in some areas,” said an official of the India Meteorological Department.

The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 35 degrees Celsius and 22 degrees Celsius.

Delhi Police booths in every Metro station

Following the rapidly rising crime graph of Delhi metro stations, the city police has decided to open police booths at every metro station in the capital.

Delhi Metro has witnessed 806 criminal cases like theft and pick pocketing inside the trains and metro stations until April 10 this year. The figure for last year during the same period was just 140.

Handloom exhibition in Delhi
