HC reserves order on 3% quota for disabled in nursery admissions

Delhi High Court on Friday reserved its order on a plea challenging the Lt Governor’s nursery admission guidelines, which clubs disabled children with those from economically weaker groups (EWS) and seeking three per cent quota for kids with special needs.

A bench of justices S Ravindra Bhat and RV Easwar while reserving its verdict also directed Delhi government to submit fresh data regarding the number of seats at primary and pre-primary level in all the schools, how many of these can accommodate children with special needs, etc.

‘Ensure representation of minorities in civil services’

Delhi Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung Friday called upon the academic fraternity to ensure adequate representation in civil services for minorities, the Scheduled Castes, the Scheduled Tribes, and backward classes .

“One of the strengths of the constitution is the principle that guarantees equality and fraternity leading to affirmative action,” Jung said after inaugurating the academic building of the Residential Coaching Academy at Jamia Millia Islamia.

He lauded the efforts of the institution for promoting the cause of minorities.

Wet Friday in Delhi, more rains Saturday

Delhi HC to hear plea on power subsidy April 1

The Delhi High Court Friday agreed to hear a plea seeking direction to frame a scheme to ensure that underprivileged residents of the capital, consuming less than 400 units of electricity per month, are not affected following the lapse of subsidy after April 1.

A division bench of Acting Chief Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Siddharth Mridul posted for April 1 the plea that said Delhi residents will face high electricity tariff after March 31 due to the expiry of government subsidy for consumers using less than 400 units in a month.

India to observe Earth Hour Saturday

As the clock strikes 8.30 p.m. Saturday, lights across India will be switched off to mark Earth Hour, which is observed March 29 every year.

Organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the Earth Hour is a global environmental campaign observed March 29 from 8.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m.

People are asked to switch off lights for an hour – as part of their commitment to the planet.

In India, various events have been planned for the day, with hotels and corporate houses pledging their support by switching off non-essential lights.

Pleasant Thursday in Delhi, light rain expected Friday

The national capital experienced a pleasant Thursday, with light drizzle in the morning. The Met office has forecast a partly cloudy sky Friday with one or two spells of light rain.

A total of 2 mm of rainfall was recorded till 5.30 p.m. Thursday and the day’s maximum temperature settled three notches below the season’s average at 29.1 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature was at 19.6 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season’s average.

Delhi’s heritage school gets new look

The N.P. Boys Senior Secondary School here, a heritage building built in the last century, has got a new look, thanks to the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC).

NDMC chairman Jalaj Shrivastava Thursday inaugurated the heritage building on Mandir Marg after its restoration work was completed.

The school, originally the Municipal Boys High School, is located in the area administered by the NDMC.

Designed by a British architect in 1918, the school came up in 1931. It is built according to neo-classical façade, an NDMC statement said.

HC to hear PIL against post-poll alliances, but after LS polls

The Delhi High Court Wednesday agreed to hear a plea opposing the practice of forging post-poll alliances among political parties to gain power on the ground that electors are kept in the dark about the same.

A bench of acting Chief Justice B D Ahmed and Justice S Mridul listed the matter for hearing after the elections, saying there is “substance” in the contentions raised in the petition but it will not hear the matter now.

Rahul Mishra honoured at WIFW

Designer Rahul Mishra, the first Indian to win the coveted International Woolmark Prize (IWP) in Milan, was Wednesday honoured at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) autumn-winter 2014 for his achievement.

Sunil Sethi, president Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), presented Mishra with a black cashmere scarf for winning the 2013-14 (IWP) in February.

“It’s a beautiful textile and can be draped in many ways. I am going to keep this in a special place,” Mishra told IANS.

Rare art objects displayed at National Museum

A boar-headed copper anthropomorph, a terracotta female figurine with animal horns and a monumental Naga Deva stone sculpture are amongst a few rare art objects displayed in the capital for the first time in an exhibition at the National Museum.

“The Body in Indian Art” brings together 300 artworks sourced from 44 institutions across India.

Spread over 18,000 square feet, the two-month long exhibition attempts to find answers to the universal question on death, birth and rebirth by tracing the body in several civilizations.

HC sore about inadequate publicity of northeast helpline

Expressing displeasure over adequate publicity not being given to the helpline set up for northeast people to prevent offences against them, the Delhi High Court Wednesday directed police to widely publicise the number.

A division bench of Acting Chief Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Siddharth Mridul asked Delhi Police why they have not publicised the helpline number 1093 on TV, radio and in print media for wider reach.

Delhi HC orders vehicle checks for pollution

The Delhi High Court Wednesday directed the city government and traffic police to come up with a “special checking drive” in the capital to ensure that all vehicles carry a valid pollution under control certificate.

A division bench of Acting Chief Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Siddharth Mridul was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by an RTI activist raising concern over air pollution in the capital.

Government notifies more sections of new company law

The government Wednesday notified 183 new sections of the new Companies Act, in addition to 100 sections notified earlier, making most part of the new legislation operational.

With this notification, the key requirements of the new legislation relating to incorporation, management, board functioning, accounts and audit will now be operational with effect from April 1, 2014.

Delhi HC summons official over state of night shelters

The Delhi High Court Wednesday observed that the provision of night shelters in the capital was “thoroughly unsatisfactory” and summoned the CEO of the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) to assist the court in coming out with “better and humane” shelters.

A division bench of Acting Chief Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Siddharth Mridul took the decision to call the DUSIB chief after it was informed by counsel Jayant Bhushan that most of the night shelters were operating in inhuman conditions.

JD(U)’s Delhi unit members resign over expulsion of Shabir Ali

Over fifty office bearers of Delhi JD-U today resigned in protest against the expulsion of party MP and state chief Shabir Ali.

Ali, who was Lok Sabha candidate from Sheohar, was expelled by the party yesterday for praising BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.

The office beares sent a signed letter to JD-U President Sharad Yadav today alleging that there was an attempt to strangulate democracy within the party, which has reached its climax.

Delhi HC extends stay on nursery admission

The Delhi High Court Monday extended its stay on the nursery admission process till March 28, asking the city government to file updated data relating to the available number of seats and candidates seeking admission after the inter-state transfer category was scrapped.

A division bench of Acting Chief Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Siddharth Mridul rejected the report of the education department with regard to nursery admission in the unaided recognised private schools.

AAP workers protest against their own leaders

Workers of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) protested against their party chief Arvind Kejriwal and other top-level leaders on Sunday saying these ”common men” have turned their back on the real common man of New Delhi. A group formed out of AAP, the Aam Aadmi Sena has become hostile towards its own party, blaming it for turning a deaf ear to the demands and problems of people.

Five year jails to two men for funding 2005 Delhi blasts

A court here Friday awarded five year jail terms to two men, who had supplied hawala money to the alleged mastermind of 2005 Delhi Diwali-eve serial blasts.

Additional Sessions Judge Daya Prakash passed sentence on Gulam Ahmed Khan and Farooque Ahmed Batloo, who pleaded guilty.

Khan and Batloo were facing trial in the case with Tariq Ahmed Dar, the alleged mastermind. Police contended that both of the accused had allegedly supplied around Rs.30 lakh to Dar through the hawala channel for carrying out the blasts.

Election officials seize Rs 30 lakh from man in Delhi

Election officials today seized Rs 30 lakh from a man at a checkpost near Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital here.

The money was seized by the Static Surveillance Team (SST) of East District Election Office deployed at the checkpost.

“The SST team intercepted Rs 30 lakh cash from one Jakir Hussain in a Swift Desire car with UP registration number,” said an Election Commission official.
