Delhi event discusses poll questions

‘Hum Dekhenge: Looking Back’ – an event to help voters get answers to some questions ahead of the Lok Sabha election was organised here Sunday.

Questions such as “What do we want to vote for”, “What does the future hold for us if we do not vote wisely” and “what is really at stake in these elections”, were addressed through a series of panel discussions.

The event was meant to help voters, who are seeking a “change” with these elections, understand the meaning of “change”.

Delhi HC refuses to quash FIR against AAP leader

The Delhi High Court has refused to quash a police complaint filed against an AAP candidate in the Delhi assembly election who was allegedly involved in a scuffle with a police constable at a polling booth.

In a recently delivered order, Justice Veena Birbal dismissed the plea of Aam Aadmi Party leader Rajan Prakash saying the case “does not fall within the parameters set down for quashing of FIR”.

Shelter for Delhi old age inmates after fire

About 150 homeless inmates residing in a makeshift old age home in Delhi that caught fire, have been provided a temporary shelter while a search is on to locate the people who went missing, police said Saturday.

Ravi Kalra, director of NGO Earth Saviours Foundation that was running the home for over five years in south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj, told IANS some tents have been arranged as temporary shelter for the homeless.

“Now, these people have a temporary roof. Some residents arranged food and necessary materials. I am trying to provide them better arrangements,” said Kalra.

Warm Saturday in Delhi, Sunday to be similar

The city experienced a sunny, warm Saturday as the maximum temperature settled a notch above the season’s average at 35 degrees Celsius. The Met office has forecast similar weather Sunday but rain may occur in the night.

“The sky will remain clear tomorrow (Sunday) with mist in the morning. The day would be warm. Thundery development could occur in some areas in the evening and night,” said an official of the India Meteorological Department.

The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 36 and 19 degrees Celsius.

Sunny Saturday in Delhi

A clear and sunny Saturday lies ahead for Delhiites, said the Met Office.

“The sky will remain clear. Mist was recorded in the morning,” said an official of the India Meteorological Department.

Saturday’s minimum temperature was recorded at 19 degree Celsius and the maximum temperature is likely to hover around 33 degrees Celsius.

Friday’s maximum temperature settled at 32.2 degrees Celsius, a notch below the season’s average and the minimum temperature recorded at 17.8 degrees Celsius, a notch below the season’s average.

Most Delhiites reschedule holiday plans to cast vote: Assocham

Eager to cast their vote, about 69 per cent of the people residing in the national capital have scrapped plans to take advantage of holidays next week and head out of town, according to an Assocham survey.

Most offices are likely to be closed on Tuesday, April 8, due to Ram Navami, and on Thursday, April 10, when polling is scheduled in Delhi. By taking leave on two days — Wednesday and Friday — many office-goers can get six straight days of holidays, including the weekend.

DMRC starts tunnelling work for Janakpuri-Noida line

The Delhi Metro Thursday began tunnelling work in west Delhi’s Palam area as part of its Phase III expansion, an official said.

The tunnel at Palam on the Janakpuri West-Botanical Garden (Noida) corridor will help connect areas like Janakpuri and Dabri in west Delhi to south Delhi areas like Nehru Place and Hauz Khas.

“The tunnel which starts from the Palam metro station will emerge at the end of the Dwarka flyover (towards Dhaula Kuan) after covering a distance of 1.51 km, from where the alignment will become elevated,” said a Delhi Metro statement.

Dellhi High Court allows nursery admission process to begin

Ending the stalemate over the nursery admission process, the Delhi High Court Thursday allowed schools to begin admitting toddlers who have been selected in draw of lots.

A division bench of Acting Chief Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Sidharth Mridul however clarified that the admission process will not include the inter-state transfer category students as their case would be further heard on April 16.

Delhi’s 33 percent LS candidates are millionaires

At least 33 percent of Delhi’s Lok Sabha candidates are millionaires, says an analysis by the Association of Democratic Reforms.

Of the total 150 candidates contesting in Delhi’s seven parliamentary seats, 49 are millionaires.

Congress MP Kapil Sibal is the richest with property valued Rs.114 crore. He is followed by another Congress MP, Mahabal Mishra, who owns Rs.38 crore property.

Bharatiya Janata Party’s New Delhi candidate Meenakshi Lekhi has assets amounting to Rs.34 crore.

BJP manifesto on Delhi bundle of lies: DPCC

Describing BJP’s Delhi-specific manifesto for the Lok Sabha elections as a bundle of lies, Congress in the national capital today dismissed it as a “document of betrayal”.

“Promising full statehood for Delhi is nothing new to the BJP and it is trying to mislead the Delhi’s people through its election manifesto,” Delhi Congress president Arvinder Singh told a press conference.

Kejriwal faces protests during road show in capital

Former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday faced protests during his road show aimed at reviving the shrinking base among the common man and to consolidate his Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) position in the upcoming general elections.

Protesters wore black bandanas and shouted anti-AAP and Kejriwal slogans. People said that Kejriwal has betrayed and broken trust of Delhi residents.

“We are against him. He is an escapist. He betrayed us. We gave him votes and he backstabbed us by running away,” said an irked protester.

IM men were planning to carry out terror strike in Delhi: Cops

Top Indian Mujahideen operative Tehseen Akhtar was planning to carry out a terror strike in the national capital with the help of other members of the banned outfit, Delhi Police today told a court here today.

“After arrest, accused Tehseen Akhtar alias Monu has disclosed that he is a member of IM and has been involved in many terrorist activities in Delhi and other states of India and presently he was planning a terrorist strike in Delhi along with the other members of IM,” the Special Cell of Delhi Police said.

Expedite probe against Virbhadra: Delhi HC to CBI

The Delhi High Court Wednesday directed the CBI to speed up a probe against Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh into allegations of corruption against him.

A division bench of Acting Chief Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Siddharth Mridul expressed displeasure at the status report submitted by the Central Bureau of Investigation on corruption, money laundering and possession of assets disproportionate to know sources of income of Virbhadra Singh.

Jindal defamation suit: HC directs Zee to follow guidelines

The Delhi High Court Tuesday directed the Zee group to follow the News Broadcasters Association (NBA) guidelines while telecasting programmes. It was hearing a defamation suit filed by lawmaker Naveen Jindal contending that the group aired “highly defamatory and malicious” programmes against him.

Lok Sabha member Jindal moved the high court seeking a restraining order for Zee News channel from telecasting programmes based on him on the basis of “false, fabricated, manipulated and misleading documents and information”.

Climate change beginning to affect world: IPCC report

The effects of climate change are already visible across the world, specially among vulnerable population of countries like India, the new report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said Monday.

“The effects of climate change are already occurring on all continents and across the oceans. The world, in many cases, is ill-prepared for a changing climate,” the report said.

Delhi Metro shuts two stations

The Delhi Metro on Monday shut down two stations in the capital due to a religious gathering on a disputed land.

The two stations are Jor Bagh and INA.

“The two stations were closed for public from 10.45 am due to security reasons,” a Delhi Metro official said.

According to a Delhi Police official, the stations were advised to be shut as members of a particular community are coming together at the disputed Karbala plot in Jor Bagh area.
