On Saturday, Children from government schools have proved everybody wrong by participating in the Spelling Bee contest organized just for them. It is often observed that these children were laughed at for their poor public speaking skills.

However, it was a special moment for Shivani GD, a class IX student from a government high school in Honnaganahatti village near Tavarekere along Magadi Road, as she has proved her self by participating in Spelling Bee competition which was conducted on Saturday and winning a tablet computer.

Six-year-old Saravana, of UKG, was enjoying a game in the school premises when things went horribly wrong. A class-fellow, in friendly teasing mood take hold of handful of mud and threw it at Saravana. Unfortunately, along with the mud was a nail which hit Saravana’s right eye, unsighted him completely.

Saravana’s father, Raghu, a daily-wage worker blames the school authorities at A K R Memorial School in Horamavu’s Thirumala Layout for the loos of his son’s vision.

Visiting German First Lady Daniela Schadt had a lively interaction Friday here with adolescent girls from Koppal district in northern Karnataka.

Schadt, who is accompanying her husband and German President Joachim Gauck on a three-day visit to the state, drove to Bal Bhavan in Cubbon Park in the city centre to meet the rural girls.

A patron of German national committee of Unicef, Schadt heard the experiences of the girls dealing with issues related to social practices like the Devadasi system, child marriage and child labour.

A unit of Students’ Islamic Organisation of India, Udupi called unit Islamic Children Circle(ICC) conducted a contest called “UDUPI’S GOT TALENT-2014″ in Jamia Masjid here recently.

A ‘Right to Education awareness campaign’ was organised by Students Islamic Organisation here recently.

On Thursday, night at Kudlu in Parappana Agrahara, a 41-year-old woman was found dead under mysterious circumstances.

The deceased was identified as Umashankari. She was married to Kumaraswamy and the couple have a 14-year-old son. On Thursday evening, Kumaraswamy immediately took his wife to Jayanagar government hospital where she died.

Kumaraswamy narrated the police his wife had consumed sleeping pills as she was suffering from headache, and might have died of a drug overdose.

Kodanda Reddy of Nellore in Andhra Pradesh was arrested by Mahadevapura police in connection with the murder of a senior citizen who was found strangled to death at her resident in B Narayanapura in the City.

About 100 gram gold jewellery belonging to Kondamma was recovered by the police from Reddy.
Kondamma was staying alone on the ground floor of her son Srinivasulu’s house. He lived on the first floor.

Based on the investigations, it was found that Reddy was working as a construction labourer and often visited the City on work.

On Friday, the High Court of Karnataka passed a provisional order directing the State government not to resort to “coercive measures” while enforcing the Right to Education Act, 2009.

Justice Anand Byrareddy passed the orders stating that there was no authority in the State available to proclaim any institution unaided minority institution, after hearing a petition filed by Karnataka Regional Commission for Education and Karnataka State Minorities Educational Institutions Managements Federation,

A workshop on caregivers’ will be conducted by the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services of Nimhans on education and support programme for caregivers of persons with mental illness, on the theme “Welfare benefits of persons with psychiatric disorder” on February 18.

On Friday, Passengers of a BMTC bus caught four women who were making an attempt to steal gold chains in the crowded vehicle. The arrested have been identified as Usha, Asha, Gayatri and Meera. All the four women were the natives of Tamil Nadu.

The four women get on a Peenya-bound bus at Yeshwantpur, each carrying a child. When the bus passed through Goraguntepalya, one of the passengers realised that her gold chain was missing.

The needle of suspicion pointed towards the four women who allegedly confessed to the crime on being interrogated.

Head of the Kodippadi madrasa is said to have issued a ‘fatwa’ that girls should not participate in dance programmes in schools.

According to Abubakar Madani, head of the madrasa, “Quran prohibits girls from dancing on stage and the Quran & Hadees prohibit boys watch girls dancing. Therefore, school girls should not take part in dancing programmes.”

One of the teachers at the government school said, “according to this decree, even girls in the first standard are not permitted to take part in cultural events. Boys will not be able to play cricket or football.”

Conducting the first hearing in the case of alleged medical negligence in Mairyam Kauser’s case, the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR) has directed the doctors to submit her medical records by February 10.

This is one of the highest amounts claimed as alimony in court.

On Thursday, a transit centre-cum-shelter home, Vatsalya Bhavan, was inaugurated by Gurneet Tej, Director, Department of Women and Child Development, in the City.

The director of the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology Dr M Vijayakumar was suspended in anticipation of investigation following allegations of a multi-crore drug purchase scam.

On Thursday evening, Robert Wilson, 20 years, pursuing an animation course in the City, was found dead in Sankey Tank.
Sadashivanagar police immediately reached the spot and fished out the body. The victim, Wilson was identified from the documents found on him. He hailed from Coimbatore.

He was also working part time at a hotel in Vyalikaval. Police suspect that he might have committed suicide on Wednesday. A case has been registered by the Sadashivanagar police.

A traumatic environment is created at Navodaya Kishore Kendra in Kuvempunagar, Bangalore North when a badly –spelt handwritten note was written to parents asking them not to wear nighties, shorts or burqas while dropping their children. This results in remonstration by several parents.

The contention of a parent, Mohammed Almeem, was that the management of the school had maintained that women remove their burqas while picking up children. Of the 750 children studying from kindergarten to Class X, almost 50 per cent are said to be Muslim.

Following Chief Minister Siddaramaiah admonishing the City police for not registering criminal cases and arresting policemen allegedly involved in extortion, the City police have filed criminal cases against a police inspector and three constables who were beforehand attached to HAL Police Station.

Hours after Siddaramaiah made scathing remarks and took City Police Commissioner Raghavendra H Auradkar to errand at the annual senior police officials meet, criminal cases were booked against four policemen, and they were placed under suspension since Tuesday evening.
