200cr loan for ITI staff gets govt nod

The government on Friday approved a soft loan of Rs 200 crore for paying salaries to employees of loss-making PSU Indian Telephone Industries (ITI) Ltd. The move is expected to mitigate the hardship being faced by the company in paying its employees. ITI Ltd had 7,633 employees as on December 1, 2013.The decision was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA).

Acid attacks are petering out in Karnataka

Recently, city court sentenced a man who threw acid at his wife to life imprisonment, the second harshest punishment the law of the land prescribes for atrocious crimes.

The judgment seems to indicate a strict stand against acid attacks in the state. Statistics only confirm this: From being a state with one of the highest incidence of acid attacks in the country, Karnataka has at present become one of the states with the lowest number of such cases.

The temporary shops built by the BDA next to the market can be big enough for only 110 of the 247 traders. The market will give way for a shopping complex being built under public private partnership by the BBMP and the BDA.

P N Nayak, BDA engineer member, claimed that the BBMP had asked them to build only 110 shops. “These are temporary shops. Traders will be shifted to the market once the construction is over.”

Karnataka Assembly passes vote on account budget

The fiscal deficit which was 2.90 per cent of GSDP in 2013-14 was expected to touch 2.92 per cent during 2014-15, which is below three per cent limit set by the Centre, he said while replying to discussion on the budget in the state assembly.

Mariyam Kauser back in ICU

Mariyam Kauser, the three-year-old victim of medical negligence was shifted to the intensive care unit again at the Malathi Manipal hospital from the special ward, three days back.

Dr. Sudarshan Ballal, director, Manipal Hospital, said that “the child has temperature which might be due to viral fever. However, she is being examined for any other infections. Hope to complete Karnataka land acquisition by March: Arcelor

NRI billionaire L N Mittal-led ArcelorMittal has 2,659- acre private land already in possession. It had acquired 1,827 acres and 832 acres in December 2011 and December 2012.

“This leaves a balance of 136.33 acres land owned by the Karnataka government which is being processed for allocation is expected to be completed during the first quarter of 2014,” ArcelorMittal said in its latest annual report for 2013.

In the 2012 annual report, the company had said that balance (136.33 acres) was being processed for allocation by the state without giving any timeframe.

Malleswaram bomb blast accused arrested

The Tamil Nadu police arrested K. Sahul Hameed alias Paravai Basha, accused in the Mallaeswaram bomb blast case, on February 22. The Bangalore police hope to interrogate Basha and elicit more information on the blast which occurred a year ago.

Basha is said to have arranged the logistics and supplied explosives to those who executed the crime. The Bangalore police would get his custody in a few days.

BBMP laid foundation for Integrated Waste Management Facility (IWMF)

On Monday, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), in association with Switzerland-based Satarem India laid the foundation for the Integrated Waste Management Facility (IWMF) in the City.

The project taken up under public-private partnership implies Satarem installing the City’s first IWMF on Nelamangala-Hassan Road. The total cost of the plant is close to Rs 300 crore. Venkatesh Sivaraman, Executive Director, Satarem India, said that it would take as a minimum of two years to accomplish the work.

Bidai scheme lacks publicity,fails to reach beneficiaries

The ‘Bidai’ scheme launched by the State government for providing financial assistance to poor minorities to meet their wedding expenses, is yet to gain publicity as only a few beneficiaries have got themselves registered for the scheme in Bijapur.

The officials in the Department of Minority Welfare admit that owing to inadequate publicity, people of minority community are not coming forward to make use of the benefit.

LPG distribution will be affected from February 25 as distributors across the country have make up their mind to launch an indefinite strike urging the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and the oil marketing companies to concede to their demands.

Gender studies, theatre and law among CBSE electives

Theatre, Gender studies and law will be some of the new electives offered to students by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in the 2014-15 sessions.

The electives also include NCC, Human Rights, Knowledge Traditions and Practices of India and these subjects will be offered to students of classes 11 and 12. The board said the subjects will deal with their historical and current contexts.

Mariyam Kauser, on the road to recovery

Mariam Kauser, the three-year-old, who was in a state of coma for the last three months, due to medical negligence, finally opened her eyes to the joy and relief of her relatives.

She was shifted from the ICU to a special ward at the Malathi Manipal Hospital on February 18, after slight movements in her body were noticed by her parents’ relatives. However, she is still on tracheotomy.

Woman commits suicide over alleged dowry harassment

Alleged harassment by husband led a 30-year-old woman to commit suicide here on February 19.

The deceased, Thahira, wife of Muhammed Haneef and a resident of Shivalli in Udupi district allegedly hanged herself to death at her husband’s house.

Her mother and brother filed a complaint at Manipal police station stating that she was being physically abused by her husband. They also alleged that Thahira was not allowed to visit her parents for many years.

Ambarish’s health stable, says doctor

Kannada star and Karnataka Housing Minister M.H. Ambarish is recovering from a breathing problem caused due to lung infection, a senior doctor at a private hospital here said Sunday.

“Ambarish’s health condition is stable and improving, though he is still on ventilator to help him breathe easily and avoid strain,” Vikram Hospital’s chief pulmonologist K.S. Satish told reporters here.

The 61-year-old was admitted to the hospital late Friday after he felt feverish and uneasy and complained of difficulty in breathing.
