Demand for power pushed up due to soaring temperature

Soaring temperatures have pushed up the demand for power in Karnataka, which leads to a shortage of around 400 MW.

As per a press release from the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL), the Power Company of Karnataka Limited (PCKL) is taking measures to purchase power from producers within the State, to come to get the additional requirement.

The release said that owing to glitches in thermal units, there was load-shedding in the State last week.

Toyota India lifts lockout, workers refuse to budge

The stand-off between Toyota India and its agitating employees continued as they refused to sign an undertaking for joining duty after eight-day lockout was lifted early Monday.

“As we are against giving or signing any undertaking, none of us has entered the factory for the first shift beginning 6 a.m.,” Toyota Kirloskar Motor Ltd. union president Prasanna Kumar told IANS here.

A defiant management has been insisting that the workers should be give an undertaking to abide by rules governing their work ethic and conduct.

29K flexes were pulled down byBBMP

Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) pulled down over 29,585 flex banners and 26 unauthorised advertisement panels.

The banners and hoardings featured political parties and party leaders, birthday wishes, cutouts, welcome greetings to political leaders for Lok Sabha elections among others.

According to officials, 75 per cent of advertisements were carrying images of various political parties, their symbols and pictures of leaders.

The attack on a security guard at an ATM in Kammanahalli has brought to the scene in view how guards without arms are becoming easy targets of criminals.

Recently, three security guards at various ATM booths have suffered injuries after being attacked with lethal weapons.
In the past decade, about 30 guards, deployed by private security agencies at various establishments, have been put to death and many cases have remained unsolved.

Three priests arrested for murder in Bangalore seminary

Police Friday achieved a breakthrough in the murder of rector Father Thomas last year at the St Peter’s seminary here by arresting three priests for their alleged involvement in the crime.

“It appears the accused have fatally assaulted the 65-year-old rector who caught them stealing documents from the seminary at Malleswaram (in the northwest suburbs),” Additional Police Commissioner (Crime) Pronob Mohanty told reporters here.

The rector was found dead April 1, 2013 in the seminary with head injuries and the case remained a mystery, as the accused had left no clues at the crime scene.

Prices of tender coconut climb sharply as supplies fall

The City has to face a shortage of tender coconuts this summer because the arrivals dropping considerably at the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) yard at Maddur in Mandya district, since the City gets a large chunk of its tender coconut supplies from Maddur.

Officers at the APMC in Maddur said that since March 1, shortage of water supply to the coconut farms had considerably reduced the yield. “Tender coconut production is getting affected due to various diseases,” said N G Venkatesh Reddy, secretary, APMC, Maddur.

6-year-old girl molested by tutor

A 6-year-old girl was sexually harassed by her tutor near her home in Gangondanaalli on Wednesday, according to police. The victim and her brother used to attend Quran classes run by their neighbour Abdul Bari, 34year-old, a native of Bihar.

As per police complaint made by her mother, her children had gone to attend the class on Wednesday. While the boy returned home in an hour, there was no sight of the girl.

N-E girls hostel proposed by BU

Bangalore University has it in mind to construct a hostel for girl students from the Northeast at a cost of Rs 15 crore.

Toyota India to lift lockout Monday

Toyota India has agreed to lift the lockout in its twin car plants five days after shutting them down over a failed wage hike deal with its employees.

“The decision (to lift lockout) was taken considering the inclination and in the interest of the majority of law-abiding team members,” Toyota Kirloskar Motor Ltd said in a statement hours after talks with its workers’ union ended in presence of a senior state labour official here late Thursday.

The company, however, has asked the employees to give an undertaking on good conduct before resuming work Monday.

Protest erupted against school authorities in Bangalore on Wednesday after two girls allegedly committed suicide.

Reportedly, they committed suicide for being punished for celebrating Holi in school premises.

On Monday, Priyanka (15) and Sonali (15), studying in tenth grade of a convent school, reportedly celebrated Holi by throwing colour on each other. The students were threatened that their parents would be called to inform about their poor performance in academics.

India offers to set up IT centre in Timor-Leste

India has offered to set up a Centre of Excellence in Information Technology (CEIT) in the Indian Ocean nation of Timor-Leste that lies between Indonesia and Australia.

India’s Ambassador to Indonesia Gurjit Singh, who is concurrently accredited to Timor-Leste, made the offer when he called on Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao during a visit to the island nation’s capital Dili March 13-15, according to a statement issued by the Indian embassy in Jakarta.

Toyota workers union softens wage hike demand

Agitating Toyota’s workers Tuesday said they are open to lower their wage hike demand to persuade management to lift the lockout declared Sunday.

“We are open to reduce our wage hike demand to Rs.4,000 per month from Rs.8,000 asked earlier for fiscal 2013-14 in view of the increase in cost of living and more workload, as we want management to lift lockout immediately,” Toyota Kirloskar Motor Ltd Union president Prasanna Kumar told IANS here Tuesday.

Architecture student dies due to alleged ragging

Ahad Ibrahim (20), an architecture student of Acharya Polytechnic College, Soladevanahalli, who suffered head injuries on January 27, died at a private hospital in Thrissur, Kerala on March 11.

Ibrahim who hailed from Thrissur, Kerala was studying Diploma in Architecture at the Acharya Polytechnic College, Bangalore, residing in a flat in Bagalagunte along with two of his friends, was allegedly injured in ragging and admitted to Sapthagiri Hospital by his roommates on January 27.
