Now an award show to felicitate ETV Kannada artists

The launch of ETV Kannada Anubandha Awards 2014, aimed at celebrating the togetherness of the channel’s family while felicitating the artists for their talent and dedication, was announced here Thursday.

The concept was launched by LIVE Viacom18, a division under Integrated Network Solutions (INS), in the presence of a slew of artists from the channel.

The main gala award show will take place at Koramangala here May 31, and it will be telecast June 14 and June 15.

BJP leads in 17, Cong in 7, JDS 1 in Karnataka

Moving way ahead of the ruling Congress, BJP in Karnataka was leading in 17 of the 28 Lok Sabha constituencies and its principal opponent in seven, counting trends showed.

JDS was leading in Hassan where the party supremo and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda was ahead of his Congress rival A Manju by over 7,000 votes.

BJP strongman B S Yeddyurappa had established a margin of over 35,600 votes against Congress’ Manjunath Bhandary in his stronghold of Shimoga.

Results: ICSE class 12, 10

The Class 12 and Class 10 results of all schools affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) will be announced at 3 pm on May 17 and May 21, respectively.

Students can gain access to their results by logging on to the CISCE website: www.cisce.com and clicking on the link, ‘Results, 2014’.

Separate links of ‘ISC results’ (Class 12) and ‘ICSE results’ (Class 10) will appear, students will have to enter their seven-digit Unique ID and date of birth to see the results.

Relatives want Mariyam moved to Singapore hospital

Kin of Mariyam Kousar, the victim of alleged medical negligence, have written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, requesting that the child should be shifted to Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore for further treatment.

The three-year-old Mariyam, was a victim of medical negligence after doctors at the Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedic Hospital administered her overdose of anaesthesia.

Nine killed in mishap in Karnataka

Nine persons were killed and an equal number injured, five of them seriously, in a head-on collision between a lorry and van at Kamplapura in Mysore district on Wednesday.

The victims, hailing from Dakshina district, were returning home after a visit to Tamil Nadu, police said.

The lorry was transporting LPG cylinders.

The injured have been admitted to hospitals in Periyapatna and Mysore, they said.PTI

Judoka files dowry complaint against husband, in-laws

A Karnataka-based woman judoka on Tuesday lodged a complaint of dowry harassment against her husband and in-laws residing here, police said.

Arpitha B M, hailing from Mandya in Karnataka, who has participated in three International Judo Championships, was married to a fashion designer from the city, Chaitresh Babu in November last and had given cash and ornaments worth over Rs 10 lakh as dowry and was residing at Vadavalli here since then, she said in a complaint to SP Sudhakar.

Siddaramaiah govt has not taken off, says BJP

Slamming the performance of the Siddaramaiah government on completion of one year in office, BJP today called it “a withdrawal government” and said it has not even taken off.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday completed one year in office but chose not to mark the milestone with any celebrations as he awaits the results of the Lok Sabha elections in which he would be hoping for a strong showing by Congress in the state to consolidate his position in the party.

After leading Congress to a spectacular victory in the May Assembly polls last year, Siddaramaiah has managed to steer his government by and large without any major controversies that could pose worries for it.

Power tariff hiked in Karnataka

Power tariffs in Karnataka have been increased by an average 32 paise per unit, with the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) today giving the green signal for it.

The increase ranges from 10 paise to 50 paise per unit as against 66 paise per unit hike asked for by the electricity supply companies (Escoms) for different categories of consumers barring irrigation pumpsets and subsidised “Bhagya Jyothi/Kuteer Jyothi” households for the poor.

These mango trees date back to Tipu’s era

This farmer from Kirugavalu village in Malavalli taluk of Mandya district has preserved 116 mango trees dating back to the times of the then Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan.

Carbon dating and other scientific assessment by the Genetics and Plant Breeding Department of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, have shown that these trees are more than 200 years old.

Madrasa teacher’s daughter district topper, wishes to become CA

Ms. M Ayisha, a gentle and soft-spoken girl has made Dakshina Kannada district and her community proud by becoming the topper in the district and securing sixth place in the state in the SSLC examination 2014 in Kannada medium.

Student of Alva’s Kannada Medium High School, Moodbidri and daughter of Abdurrahman Musliyar, a poor Madrasa teacher from Belthangady, she has scored 612 out of 625 marks. Ayisha’s mother Umaira is a house-wife.

Ayisha stayed at a hostel in Moodbidri to pursue her education. She hails from Killur, a remote village in Belthangady taluk.

Survey on madrasas conducted by SIO

The Students’ Islamic Organisation (SIO) of India, Karnataka zone released the results of a survey conducted by the organisation on 29 residential madrasas offering education up to the graduation level, here on May 12.

About 966 residential madrasas are present in Karnataka.

SIO zonal President, Mr. Thouseef Ahmed M.Y said that, “The syllabus has not evolved to adapt to opportunities and challenges in the society. Rather, a large number of students stay aloof from the mainstream after passing out from madrasas.”

Government decision on medium of instruction after studying SC verdict

‘The government would be able to decide its stand on medium of instruction in primary education only after studying the Supreme Court order,’ said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah referring to the Supreme Court verdict here on May 6.

Mr. Kimmane Ratnakar, minister for Primary and Secondary Education said, “This is a blow to all the States where regional languages are not getting due importance.” He also said that a meeting would be held with pro-kannada writers and Kannada Sahitya Parishat on May 7.

CFI : reasonable fee structure is the duty and responsibility of the Government

Campus Front of India (CFI) impelled the government of Karnataka to execute logical and reasonable fee structure in professional unaided colleges, here recently. The responsibility of the government does not cease at just fixing of fee structure. It is also the duty of the government to monitor and prevent the other fees collected by educational institutions in the form of tuition fee, internet fee, hostel fee, library fee etc.

Panel submits report to Council Chairman

A report on the alleged false information furnished by Minister for Wakf Qamarul Islam, to the House, on encroachment of wakf properties in different parts of the State by various leaders, was submitted by the Legislative Council Privileges Committee to Mr. D.H. Shankaramurthy, the Council chairman here on May 8.

Mr. G. Madhusudhan, chairman of the Committee submitted the report to Mr. Shankaramurthy. Mr. Islam was holding the wakf portfolio before it was given to Mr.R. Roshan Baig after his induction into the Cabinet.

Health care system face trouble due to shortage of nurses

As nurses play a crucial role in patient recovery and post-surgical procedures, the health care system across the country is affected by the severe shortage of nurses.

Though the Medical Council of India recommends a nurse-patient ratio of 1:3, the reality is far different. According to T Dileep Kumar, President of Indian Nursing Council, said that across the country, the ratio is anywhere between 1:20 and 1:50. “In most district hospitals, it is between 1:20 and 1:30,” he added.

Karnataka SSLC Class 10th result 2014 declared

The Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board (KSEEB) announced the result of the SSLC Class 10th exams on Monday.

The exam was held from March 28 – April 09, 2014 in regional and compulsory languages. Students can check their results on the given link – http://www.karresults.nic.in/

More than eight lakh students appeared for the exam this year.

Clerk committed suicide

K T Ramachandra, aged 54, was a clerk with the Department of Prosecution, hanged himself at his residence in Sampige Layout on Saturday morning.

The incident became known when Ramachandra’s wife saw him hanging from the window railings of the bathroom. She informed the neighbours who rushed him to a nearby private hospital but he was declared brought dead.
The suicide note point the finger at his son-in-law Bhairappa for the extreme step.

‘Rankstudent.com’ students achieve high distinction

Five of seven students who were trained by Rankstudents.com, Bangalore, achieved high distinction in the recent Karnataka PU Board examinations.

Salihath PU College achieves cent percent results

Second year PU students of Salihath PU College, Udupi, 2013-14 batch have achieved cent percent results. All the students, except one, passed out in first class. Four students who secured distinction are Ameena Bi, 92% ; Sameera Naaz, 88% ; Ayisha Nimrah and Simran Banu, 87%.

Anjuman student scores perfect 100 in Math

Ms. Samah Syed daughter of Barmavar Nasir, student of Anjuman scored 100% marks in Math, Chemistry and 99% in Physics. Her overall percentage is 96.33%.

Ms. Nafisa Nashwa daughter of Mohd Jafer has topped and scored 95.33% in Commerce and Ms. Fatima Suhera daughter of Mohd Shafi has topped in Arts and scored 88.33%.

The pass percentage in commerce section is 98% in Anjuman PU Girl’s College. A total number of 33 girl students have obtained distinction.

The boys of Anjuman PU College have also done very well by obtaining 91.15% in overall result.

Swine flu claims 8 lives in Karnataka between Jan and Apr

The H1N1 influenza has claimed eight lives in Karnataka between January and April, State Health Minister U T Khadar said today.

As many as 80 people are reported to have been suffering from H1N1 influenza and are being treated at Rajiv Gandhi Hospital for Communicable Diseases, he said.

The Minister said he would write to the central government seeking reintroduction of health checkup at the airport on passengers arriving from Central Asian countries in the wake of World Health Organisation sounding an alert due to the onset of monsoon season.

Heavy rains forecast in seven districts in Karnataka

A heavy rainfall warning has been issued in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Kodagu, Shimoga, Chikmagalur and Hasan districts over the next 48 hours, owing to a depression in the Arabian sea.

Thunder squalls with wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph are likely off the coast in the next 24-hours. Fishermen have been advised not to enter the sea, the Meteorology Department said.
