Mariyam underwent complex surgery

Mariyam Kousar, a victim of alleged medical negligence, submits herself to a complex surgery for removal of water from her brain on Tuesday at Manipal Hospital on Old Airport Road in the City.

As said by Dr S Murali, Medical Superintendent of the hospital that the three-year-old child underwent an eventful brain fluid diversion (shunt) surgery.
“The girl is presently stable and needs further monitoring,” he added.

Evening shower for Bangaloreans

Unexpected showers in the City on late Tuesday evening brought a relief to Bangaloreans from scorching summer heat.

Up to 11.30 pm the City recorded 8.8 mm of rainfall whereas KIAL (up to 5.30 pm) and HAL airport (up to 11.30 pm) had received 5.6 mm and 21.7 mm rainfall, respectively.
The City recorded a maximum temperature of 33.9 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 22.4 degrees Celsius.

A few trees were uprooted in some parts of the City following the downpour.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall in the City and State for the next two days.

Wood-be groom committed suicide

A driver of 25-year-old, who was set to get married on Wednesday, ended his life by jumping into Gangondahalli Lake in Madanayakanahalli police limits on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as Harish, a resident of Bettadahalli.
The incident become public after villagers noticed a bike parked on the banks of the lake. After a thorough search of the place, the police found a death note as rumor has it was left by Harish, which stated that he had committed suicide.

Modi wave could not be stopped says UT Khader

In the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections in the State, the Congress has received a setback as it could not stop the Modi wave, said Mr. U T Khader, minister for Health and Family Welfare, here on May 19.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, opined that the party’s Janardhana Poojary was a good candidate in Mangalore. “We all worked hard for Mr. Poojary to be the next MP. However, the Modi wave worked in favour of BJP,” he said, while addressing presspersons after a meeting at his official residence, Cauvery.

UNESCO heritage tag for Bijapur monuments

In a significant step towards giving the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) heritage tag to the magnificent Adil Shahi monuments of Bijapur, the District Administration has decided to appoint a consultancy to prepare a broad plan for submitting it to the UNESCO for consideration.

Informing this to media persons on the sidelines of International Museum Day programme at the historic, Gol Gumbaz here on May 18, Deputy Commissioner, Ritvik Ranjan Pandey said that the consultancy would be given this job shortly.

HR Bhardwaj rejects reports about quitting office

Karnataka Governor HR Bhardwaj on Tuesday rejected reports that he has reached out to the Congress High Command expressing his desire to vacate the Raj Bhavan in the wake of NDA all set to form the government at the Centre.

“Governors are constitutional authorities and we don’t bow to any political parties, at least I don’t. I have maintained long distance from them … So, where is the question of I approaching New Delhi. So, I expect the President to take a decision,” he told reporters here.

Mayor directed BBMP officials to clear all SWDs areas of encroachments

On Monday, Mayor B S Satyanarayana, directed Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officers to take immediate action to make progress in all major storm water drain (SWDs) areas that have been encroached upon.

He give orders to the Palike to take action regarding clearing the major SWDs following a complaint by Jayanagar MLA, B N Vijay Kumar, at a meeting held at the BBMP head office.

Vijay Kumar rued that regardless of several meetings, no action had been taken to clear the encroachments on SWDs.

BBMP collects betterment charges for converted sites

From Wednesday, Betterment charges were collected by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike for regularisation of sites formed on converted land.

The site owners will be eligible to get ‘A’ khata on payment of betterment charges and their site will be as legalized as any site of the Bangalore Development Authority.

A circular in this regard will be issued by the Palike commissioner on Tuesday after consulting the legal cell officials and the charges could be paid from Wednesday.

Action plan to tackle monsoon woes

An action plan was chalked out by the The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to deal with the monsoon woes.

At a meeting, Mayor B S Satyanarayana and BBMP Commissioner M Lakshminarayana directed zonal and division level officers and engineers to take preventive measures to forestall any mishaps and flooding during the rainy season.

They made a decision to set up 10 control rooms in BBMP during the rainy season, working round the clock.

Karnataka CM wishes Modi best of luck

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah Monday wished BJP’s prime minister-designate Narendra Modi best of luck in leading the NDA government at the centre.

“I wish Modi all the best and hope the ensuing NDA government will extend the same cooperation as the UPA government to Karnataka despite being in different political parties,” he told reporters here.

Flagging the achievements of his government on completion of its first year in office, he said a central government of any party would have to maintain healthy relations with states in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution.

APGenco ties pact with Karnataka power supply firms

The Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation (APGENCO) and Electricity Supply Companies (ESCOMs) of Karnataka have signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) for sharing 230 MW power generated from Priyadarshini Jurala Hydro power project.

The project commissioned in April 2011 at an expense t of Rs.720 crore (Rs.3 crore per MW) has a built in tariff to be determined at identical rates for both the states by APERC. The cost of the project is low since the dam related expenditure is incurred by irrigation department, Andhra Pradesh.

CM vows to make Karnataka “hunger free” within his 5-year term

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah today said Congress Government in Karnataka will make it a “hunger free” state within five years of his term in office, apparently laying thrust on the ambitious Re 1 a kg rice scheme ‘Anna Bhagya’.

Siddaramaiah, while speaking to reporters on the occasion of his completing one year in office on May 13, also dismissed the charge by the Opposition that the government had failed to realise the goals of the previous budget.

Man and woman found dead at Konaje Campus

Two employees of the Mangalore University were found dead at the Konaje Campus staff quarters of the university here, police said.

Ramappa (59) was found hanging and the body of Tilaka (40), both employed as attenders, was lying on the floor, police said, adding, both had been missing for the last three days.

A neighbour had informed the police about the foul smell emanating from the staff quarters following which police broke open the door and found their bodies.

Lotus blooms, Congress wilts in Karnataka

The Lok Sabha election has been a god-sent opportunity for a bruised BJP in Karnataka to bounce back a year after it was dumped, thanks to a “Modi wave” under which the Congress wilted during peak summer.

Winning 17 of the 28 parliamentary seats in the state Friday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) recorded a hat-trick at the hustings albeit two less than the 19 of 2009 and one less than the 18 in 2004. The ruling Congress won nine seats as against six in 2009, while the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) bagged two as against three in 2009.

Yeddyurappa meets RSS leaders, says party will decide on cabinet berth

Former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa today said that Narendra Modi and BJP leadership would take a call on the issue of inducting him into the new Union cabinet.

“It is left to Narendra Modi and all India party leadership,” Yeddyurappa told reporters here when asked whether he would be inducted in the Cabinet.

He was speaking after calling on top RSS leadership here.

Attributing BJP’s massive victory in the Lok Sabha polls to Modi and party cadres, he also underscored the failure of the Congress party.

BJP secures 2.2 percent more vote share over Congress in Karnataka

Riding on the “Modi wave”, a 2.2 percent swing in its favour has propelled BJP to outperform the ruling Congress in Karnataka and secure 17 seats.

The Congress has secured 40.8 per cent of the votes as against BJP’s 43 per cent, up from 41.63 per cent in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls, an analysis of the voting percentage showed.

In the last Lok Sabha elections, BJP had secured 19 seats, Congress six and JDS 3.

It is a remarkable turnaround for BJP which had polled 19.9 per cent of the votes in the May 2013 Assembly polls that brought down the party’s first ever government in the South.

Government urged to retrieve Tipu’s ring

Noted historian S. Settar has appealed to the Centre and the Karnataka government to take immediate steps to stop the auction of a ring belonging to 18 th century warrior king Tipu Sultan by a London firm on May 22.

Prof. Settar, Emeritus Professor, National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), has written to Union Minister of Culture Chandresh Kumari Katoch and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to “make use of all available avenues, legal and diplomatic, to recover the ring.”

Session for career counseling to begin from May 18

Second Pre-University (II PU) results are out and now it is time to choose a dream career for the students with more opportunities than before. The Hindu EducationPlus will be conducting its annual career counseling session for three weekends in 15 centres starting from May 18.

Six killed as bus catches fire

Six persons were charred to death and 12 others injured, five of them serious, when a Bangalore-bound bus caught fire at Metikurke, 25 km from here, today.

Three critically injured passengers have been hospitalised at Davangere while two of them were admitted to a hospital here, police said.

The bus was carrying about 30 passengers from Davangere when the tragedy struck in the early hours, they said.PTI

Nilekani trails on Bangalore South seat

Bangalore, May 16 (IANS) Infosys co-founder and technocrat Nandan Nilekani of the Congress party was Friday trailing BJP’s Ananth Kumar by over 35,000 votes in Karnataka’s prestigious Bangalore South Lok Sabha constituency as counting of ballots cast in the general election was in progress.

“Kumar has been ahead of Nilekani from first round and surging ahead in other assembly segments of the vast parliamentary constituency to maintain a healthy lead,” a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesman told IANS here.

Naming of university after Tipu, opposed

Writer and Sahithya Akademi Award recipient, Dr. M. Chidananda Murthy has opposed the reported plan of naming a university to be set up in Kolar district, after Tipu Sultan, here on May 12.

Addressing the press persons, Dr. Murthy said that, recently the Tipu Sultan United Front (TSUF) insisted that the government should name the new university after Tipu Sultan.

Mr. K Rahman Khan, union minister for Minorities Affairs, had also stated that one of the five universities intended to be set up by the Centre in Kolar district would be named after Tipu Sultan.
