Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah calls on Modi, Sadananda Gowda

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah Wednesday called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister DV Sadananda Gowda in the national capital and discussed various issues pertaining to the state, an official said.

“Siddaramaiah called on Modi at the latter’s office and congratulated him for becoming the prime minister. He also discussed issues pertaining to the state, including the language policy and the Cauvery river water sharing with neighbouring states,” an official of the chief minister’s office in Bangalore told IANS.

Train derailed, more than 100 passengers had narrow escape

Over hundred passengers had a narrow escape when a coach of the Yesvantpur-Howrah Super Fast Express (12864) train derailed near Kuppam, about 125 kilometres from Bangalore, on Tuesday night.

No one was injured in the accident and the South Western Railway staff hurried to clear the train from the track and ensure traffic movement.

The train, scheduled to make tracks at 7.30 pm, left around 8 pm.
At around 10.45 pm minutes, the second class sleeper coach No S1 derailed before it could reach Kuppam. 

Dalit leaders held meeting with CM about annulment of the posting of ADGP’s

Three ministers— H C Mahadevappa, H Anjaneya and V Srinivas Prasad—have taken up the cause of IPS officer P Ravindranath with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

The ministers, all dalits, have requested annulment of the posting of the officer to Dharwad.
In what could be perceived as palpable political interference, the ministers requested the chief minister on Tuesday to give the officer a prominent posting in Bangalore itself.

The officer has claimed that he has been under fire by his seniors because he belongs to a Scheduled Caste.

Gulbarga road accident claims 15 lives

The fateful road accident of a Mahindra Bolero Mini Truck and a NEKRTC bus on the Waghdhari-Ripponpalli highway, left 15 people killed and 11 others injured. Five women and three children were killed and 11 others injured in the horrific accident a few kilometres from Aland town near Kodalhangarga village in Gulbarga district here on June 2.

The victims hailed from a village called Tadwal which is 25 km from Akkalkot in Maharashtra.

The condition of one of the 11 injured was stated to be very serious. The injured included the driver and the conductor of the NEKRTC Bus.

Fouzia Choudhary nominated as chairperson of ‘Urdu Academy’

Fouzia Choudhary Begurn has been nominated as the Chairperson of the Karnataka State Urdu Academy and thirteen others were named as its members by the State government here on June 1.

According to a press release, Anil Thakkar, Mohammed Amjad Hussain, Mohammed Ashfaq Siddiqui, Nyamathulla Khan, Sabeeha Zubair Khan, Sayeed Yousuf Ali Natique, Syed Shafique Ahmed (Shafique Abidi), Rizwanulla Khan, Bhandari Rafi Ahmed Mohammed Hashim and Muhammed Yousuf have been nominated as its members.

Indian IT bellwether Wipro Ltd has entered into a partnership with enterprise application software major SAP to deliver managed mobility services to customers at lower costs.

‘Open dialogue needed between Hindus and Muslims to dispel misconceptions’

The former Vice-Chancellor of Karnataka Samskrit University and secretary of Gandhi Peace Foundation Mallepuram G. Venkatesh has called for an open and healthy dialogue between the Hindu and Muslim communities to dispel misconceptions about one another.

Speaking at a seminar on ‘Understanding Muslims’, organised by the monthly ‘Muslim Dani’ in collaboration with the foundation and Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi here on June 1, Prof. Venkatesh said the cultural and social history of Karnataka was marked by rich interactions between Hindus and Muslims.

IPS officer accused of clicking woman’s pictures given posting

Senior IPS officer P Ravindranath, accused of clicking “objectionable” pictures of a woman in a coffee shop, has been posted as Additional Director General of Police Research and Restructuring.

Ravindranath was transferred from the post of Additional DGP of Karnataka State Reserve Police after the woman’s complaint.

A government notification said Ravindranath has been posted as Additional Director General of Police, Research and Restructuring, Dharwad, in the existing ex-cadre post with immediate effect.

Karnataka govt to bring legislation to punish bogus ration card holders

Karnataka government will enact a new legislation to punish bogus ration card holders, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Dinesh Gundurao said on Monday.

“On the instruction of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, we are enacting a legislaton to punish fake ration card holders to implement Anna Bhagya (scheme to provide rice at Re 1 a kg to the poor) without any obstacles,” he told reporters here.

No leniency would be shown after the initiation of the process of filing criminal cases against the bogus ration card holders, the minister said.

Heavy rains lash Bangalore, hit normal life

Heavy rains lashed Bangalore late Monday after a hot day, throwing normal life out of gear and causing huge traffic jams across the city due to evening rush hour and congestion on many arterial roads.

According to the weather office, the city received 20 to 30mm rainfall in two hours from 6.30 p.m., inundating low-laying areas and heavy winds uprooted trees in many residential areas.

15 killed in Karnataka van-bus collision

At least 15 people, including three children, were killed and a dozen injured when a van and a bus collided head-on and fell in a ditch in Karnataka, police said.

The accident took place in Aland, 40 km from here and 700 km from Bangalore.

The collision occurred around 5 a.m. on a highway when a pick-up van and a state-run route bus collided head-on at high speed and fell in a roadside ditch, Gulbarga superintendent of police Amit Singh told IANS.

Most of the victims were from the van, which was going to Gulbarga from Akkalgud in Sholapur district of Maharashtra across the border.

Fish kill at lake raises stench

Bangalore Development Authority and BBMP officials were found passing the buck for the damaged Gowdanapalya Lake bund, which resulted in large scale fish kill in Dorekere.

As officials are indulged in blame game, at least 20,000 fish were found dead in Dorekere on Friday. According to Morning walkers, since Wednesday one lakh fish have died.

Bajrang Dal activist murder case : Police accused of falsely implicating innocent Muslims

The police officials, investigating Bajrang Dal activist, Rajesh Poojary’s murder case, have been accused of arresting innocent Muslim youths on false charges, here recently. He was killed on March 21 in Bantwal taluk.

The arrested youths are residents of Mallur taluk. Their families have alleged unjust behaviour on part of the police due to pressure brought upon by members of the Sangh Parivar. Innocent youths belonging to poor families were arrested without any evidence, they said.

Scheme ensures ration cards to DK residents

Mangalore: Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, Mr. AB Ibrahim said at the revenue officers meeting that, a scheme has been implemented to make sure that ever family from the Dakshina Kannada district will get ration cards, here recently.

On the occasion, Mr. Sharana Basapa, deputy director of the Food and Civil Supplies department said, “It was due to the Lok Sabha elections that the online filing of ration card applications had come to a standstill, which will soon resume.”

Karnataka legislature session from June 23

A 30-working day session of Karnataka Legislature would begin on June 23, state Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister TB Jayachandra on Wednesday said.

Briefing reporters after a cabinet meeting, he said the session would last till July 30.

“For the first time in the recent past, Karnataka will be holding 30-working day legislature session,” he said.

Siddaramaiah government was keen on conducting at least 60 days of legislature session in the year, he said.

Former Union minister Basangouda Patil Yatnal arrested in riot case

Former Union minister and state BJP leader Basangouda Patil Yatnal, booked in a rioting case in connection with a communal clash here on May 26, was arrested on Wednesday, a top police officer said.

“We have arrested Yatnal for his alleged involvement in a communal clash which took place here a couple of days back,” IGP (Northern Range) Bhaskar Rao told PTI here.

A case of rioting was registered against Yatnal and 29 others in connection with a communal incident, he said.

Infosys president Srinivas resigns

India’s second largest IT firm Infosys Ltd lost another senior executive with its president and board member B.G. Srinivas resigning Wednesday.

“The resignation of Srinivas will be effective June 10,” the $8.3-billion global software major said in a statement here.

Tipped to have been in race for the new executive post as an internal candidate after incumbent and co-founder S.D. Shibulal retires early 2015, Srinivas was elevated to the newly created president’s post in January along with another board member U.B. Pravin Rao.
