HC directs Engg college allows student to appear for exam

The High Court on Thursday directed the Kammavari Sangha Institute of Technology (KSIT), the engineering college on Kanakapura Road, to permit a sixth semester engineering student to write the examination scheduled for June 13.

Shreya K S, a resident of Jayanagar and a student of electronics and communications, was not permitted to write examination as she remained absent for over three months, after she met with an accident.

An interlocutory application (IA)against BBMP

An interlocutory application (IA) has been filed in the High Court praying the court to instigate suo motu criminal contempt proceedings against the government and BBMP for misleading the High Court at a number of instances regarding garbage disposal issue.

G R Mohan, Bangalore-based advocate filed the IA filed quotes the High Court, which had said that landfills were not the permanent solution to garbage disposal.

The BBMP has claimed that dry waste collection centres were constructed in 146 wards, but in actuality these collections centres were not functioning.

Virtual university for Peace and Education to organize its first award ceremony

Indian Virtual University for Peace and Education (IVUP), a Bangalore based non-academic private university, will be organizing its annual convocation and first award ceremony to honor dignitaries from different walks of life in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the society and development of the nation here at Bharatiya Vidhya Bhavan, Race Course Road from 11 am to 1 pm on June 14.

IVUP was started by a Bangalore based NGO called National Council for Professional Education. It is registered under the Planning Commission, Government of India.

Following the success of the rural schemes, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah recently inaugurated the Nagara (urban) Yashaswini health scheme for those living in urban areas. The scheme is being operational from June 1, members of various cooperatives can avail this facility by paying Rs 710 annually. The members would get cashless treatment at any of the 496 network hospitals conducting 823 surgical procedures in both government and private hospitals as part of this network. For this purpose fifty one hospitals are linked for the scheme in Bangalore.

Cabinet subcommittee formed to look into terror cases against Muslims

The State government has fulfilled one of its major promises in the manifesto by constituting a Cabinet subcommittee for looking into cases of Muslim youths being arrested on charges of terrorism, and get them released if found innocent.

The Congress had in its manifesto promised to form a committee headed by a retired high court judge for studying such cases for early release of the innocent. But sources in the Home Ministry told that the government finally decided on a Cabinet subcommittee, which will have more constitutional powers.

Police allows nightlife till 1 am in Bangalore

It’s three cheers to thousands of Bangaloreans who can soon party till 1 am throughout the week, thanks to the police permitting bars and restaurants to serve liquor and food past midnight for a year.

“We have no objection if the state government permits nightlife in Bangalore by allowing bars and pubs to serve liquor till 1 am all days of the week,” Police Commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar told reporters here late Tuesday.

The Cauvery water-sharing dispute on Tuesday created an uproar in Lok Sabha today after an AIADMK member referred to it during a debate on the motion of thanks to the President’s address.

As AIADMK Leader M Thambidurai drew the attention of Union Minister and BJP leader from Karnataka Ananth Kumar to the issue, the Minister, who hails from Karnataka, termed the matter as “sub-judice”. He was supported by members of all parties from Karnataka.

Thambidurai referred to the water row while underlining the need for linking of rivers. Trouble started after he referred to Kumar.

15-month-old girl sacrificed to unearth hidden treasure

A 15-month old girl was recently sacrificed with a desire to unearth hidden treasure at the nearby Firozabad fort, and seven persons including her father have been arrested in connection with the crime, a top police official today said.

“Seven persons have been arrested in connection with the case, father of the girl is one among them, they are said to have committed the crime with a desire to unearth treasure in the fort, about 34 km from here, but did not find anything”, Gulbarga SP Amit Singh told PTI.

A woman IT professional from Jharkhand was allegedly raped on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday in Electronics City police station limits here.

“Yes. We have received a complaint. A Jharkhand IT employee was raped at her PG (paying guest accommodation) on the intervening night between Thursday and Friday at about 3 am,” Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Kamal Panth told a news agency.

Karnataka CM opposes TN’s demand for Cauvery Management Board

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday opposed the formation of Cauvery Management Board (CMB) as sought by his Tamil Nadu counterpart Jayalalithaa when she met Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this week.

Siddaramaiah said civil appeals against the final order of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal filed by riparian Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala are still pending in the Supreme Court and as such no move should be made to form CMB.

Karnataka sets deadline to clear Bangalore garbage mess

Waking up to the growing menace of garbage piling up across Bangalore for want of landfills, the Karnataka government has set a four-month deadline to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to clear the mess.

“We have directed the civic body to clear the garbage mess in the next four months by allowing promoters to set up recycling units near the landfills, as they could not build them for want of its clearances,” state Chief Secretary Kaushik Mukherjee told reporters on the margins of a green summit here Thursday.
