Borewell claims 4-year-old’s life in Bijapur

A four-year-old girl, who fell in a 300-feet borewell in Dyaberi village near Nagatana, Bijapur, died on Thursday.

Akshata’s lifeless body was brought to the surface by rescuers almost 50 hours after the child’s ordeal started.

The incident, which sparked a massive rescue mission, happened while Akshata was walking home on Tuesday with her father, who is a farm labourer.

Minister for Water Resources, Government of Karnataka, MB Patil said, “We are going to have stricter laws, we would try to fix responsibility on borewell diggers as well.”

Karnataka to monitor investment projects online

The Karnataka government would monitor online the status of investment projects under implementation across the state, a top official said Thursday.

“The electronic projects monitoring system (ePMS) will resolve online issues delaying implementation of mega projects in which investments from Rs.100-1,000 crore are made in the state,” state Chief Secretary Kaushik Mukherjee said at an event here.

The ePMS will be file-less and paper-less from submission of application stage to clearances, as the project information will be digitised.

Efforts to rescue 4-year-old girl from borewell stepped up

Operations to rescue a 4-year-old girl trapped inside a borewell at Nagathana village near here were stepped up on Wednesday by several teams with no clue about her condition more than a day after she fell into it.

Teams from National Disaster Response Force, fire brigade, police and a robot expert were involved in the operation to rescue Akshata Hanamanth Patil, who fell into the borewell in a farm while she was following her father, a labourer, last evening.

R Roshan Baig : Indian food for pilgrims during Haj

Pilgrims going to Haj through the Haj Committee of India (HCI) will now be getting fresh Indian food during their stay at Madina, said R Roshan Baig, minister for Haj, here on June 17.

This step was taken due to a ban by the Saudi Arabian government on the pilgrims cooking food in rooms given to them.

“Indian caterers from HCI will be taken to Madina to cook food which will be supplied to the pilgrims.”

At first, fresh food will be served to those staying in Medina for seven days. It is from next year onwards that the food will be served in Mecca as well.

Optimistic of getting more benefits for Karnataka, says CM Ibrahim

Bangalore : The recently appointed Deputy Chairman to the Karnataka Planning Board, CM Ibrahim is optimistic of getting more benefits to the State because of his close ties with Central Ministers.

He cited the names of various Union ministers, who he claimed were his close friends and very powerful at the centre.

The Planning Board has a pivotal role in assisting, formulation and implementation of various development programmes and recommendation of funds to be allocated for such programmes.

Mr. Ibrahim promised to work within the federal structure and not indulge in party politics.

Enhance credit flow for hi-tech agriculture, says Karnataka Govt

The Karnataka Government has asked bankers in the State to boost credit flow to farmers willing to invest in high technology and protected agriculture.

The State is raising the spirits farmers to go in for hi-tech shade and protected farming with the intention that their incomes are insulated from the vagaries of monsoon.

Besides, the State has made a budgetary provision of Rs 500 crore this year to give a push for hi-tech and protected agriculture which requires higher level of investments.

Students need not to worry, Deemed varsities to be back in matrix

According to KEA Director R Rame Gowda, the seats of many colleges, which also includes deemed universities, missing in the Karnataka Examinations Authority’s (KEA) seat matrix for under graduate professional courses, will be uploaded and added to the seat pool before June 20.

On June 14, the KEA threw open the process of option entry for seats. Students can enter their choices for seats until June 20. But, it was found that seats of several colleges were missing from the list.

People showing more interest to learn Urdu

Interest to learn Urdu is on the rise but there is dearth of appropriate learning material, said former Additional Chief Secretary, Mr. Chiranjeev Singh at a book release function of ‘Learn Urdu’, authored by Khalid Sayeed, director of Centre for Urdu language, literature and culture, Moulana Azad National Urdu University, here on June 14.

“Urdu is a wonderful language with a vocabulary which is easy to pick-up and has been popular by ghazals and film songs. People from various backgrounds are showing interest to learn Urdu language”, he said.

BBM student raped by lover

A BBM student was allegedly raped by her boyfriend and his friend in Talaghattapura on Sunday night.

According to the victim, she met Abhishek on Facebook about 10 months ago. On Sunday night, he invited her for a ride and she joined him in a car driven by Abhishekh’s friend Raju.

The duo took her to a deserted area in Talaghattapura and raped her.Later, the duo dropped her at Byatarayanapura on Monday morning and she called up the control room.

Policewomen immediately reached the spot and she went to the police station along with them and lodged a complaint.

Meghalaya rebel arrested in Bangalore

A top leader of a Meghalaya-based rebel group was arrested in Bangalore Monday, a police official said.

“Rapiush Ch. Sangma, the vice-chairman of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), was arrested by Bangalore police based on intelligence inputs provided by us,” Meghalaya’s Director General of Police Peter Hanaman told IANS.

Sangma was arrested while he went to drop his child at a private school in the Karnataka capital.

Will strive to get more benefits to Karnataka: Ibrahim

Newly appointed Karnataka Planning Board Deputy Chairman C M Ibrahim today said he is hopeful of getting benefits to the state from the central government as he was “close” to the Union Ministers.

“This time Karnataka is very powerful at the Centre. Narendra Modi is the Prime Minister. Arun Jaitley, who is Union Finance Minister, is my close friend. Father held for raping daughter

On Saturday, while the world was in celebration on the eve of International Father’s Day, a man was arrested for molesting and raping his daughter.

The suspect, Mahadevaiah Shetty, 44, resident of Govinda shetty palya in Electronics City was identified by the Parappana Agrahara police.

According to Police, Shetty had been assaulting his 18-year-old daughter physically, a garment factory worker, for the last five months.

Bangalore city received scanty rainfall

As several parts of the City and HAL Airport received trace rainfall, the Kempegowda International Airport received nil rainfall.

A tree was uprooted in 1st Block, RT Nagar, which was cleared in the evening by BBMP. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) officials have forecast moderate rainfall for the next two days.

Mangalore DC visits centre for destitutes

Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim visited the destitute rehabilitation centre in Pachchanady, Mangalore recently. He directed the district-level committee members of the centre to arrange for treatment for persons having ailments at district hospitals. Karnataka to set up company to mitigate adverse impact of mining

The Karnataka cabinet on Friday approved the proposal to set up a company to implement the programme to mitigate the adverse impact of mining on the environment.

The proposed entity – Karnataka Mining Environment Restoration Company Limited (KMERCL) – will formulate and implement projects under the Comprehensive Environment Plan for Mining Impact Zone (CEPMIZ), Law and Parliamentary Minister TB Jayachandra told reporters in a cabinet briefing here.

Beary-Kannada-English dictionary to be available soon

The Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy has taken a decision to compile a Beary-Kannada-English dictionary, at a consultation meeting here on June 10.

According to Prof. B. A. Vivek Rai, a Kannada and Tulu scholar, the first Beary-Kannada-English dictionary could be out within two years.

“The Academy may have to refer books, Beary songs and opinion of resource persons in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chikmagalur, Kodagu before beginning the work, said Mr. B.A. Mohammed Haneef, president of the academy.

Murthy bids adieu to Infosys, once again

For the second time in three years, Infosys chairman N.R. Narayana Murthy will Saturday bid adieu to the iconic company he co-founded with four other techies in 1981.

On Saturday, he will step down from the top executive post a year after he returned to revive its sagging fortunes.

Though Murthy retired from the $8.3-billion IT bellwether in August 2011 on turning 65 in compliance with the policy he laid down for co-founders at executive posts, the company’s board prevailed upon him to return June 1, 2013 for five years.
