Manglore airport to be shut at night for six months

The night flight operations at the Mangalore International Airport (MIA) would be suspended for six months from November 1 to take up works on the runway end safety area and parallel taxiway.

“There will be no flight operations at MIA between 11.30 PM and 7.30 AM for six months from November 1. Runways and its operations will be closed till April 30 next year. Airlines have rescheduled the flights accordingly,” airport director J T Radhakrishna said.

The night operations would be closed down to take up works on the runway end safety area and parallel taxi way, he said in a release.

Tiger kills leopard in Bhadrawati forest range

A fully grown male adult leopard was killed by a tiger reportedly in a territorial dispute under Bhadrawati forest range.

According to a press release issued here today by the forest department, the incident came to notice when one of the forest guards was on patrol in Kachrala beat under Bhadrawati forest range yesterday at about 4.30 pm.

On noticing the leopard’s dead body in compartment number 204 under the Kachrala beat, pugmarks of a tiger were located around the spot.

It was also observed that the leopard’s body had injuries and deep scars on its back, caused by tiger claws.

Will talk to K’taka CM about attack on NE students: Rajnath

Expressing concern over the assault on three northeastern students in Bangalore, Home Minister Rajnath Singh Thursday said he would take up the issue with the Karnataka government for strict action against the culprits.

“I will talk to the Karnataka Chief Minister. Action should be taken. No one can discriminate against anyone on the basis of caste, creed and sect,” he told reporters on the sidelines of a function here.

Karnataka unveils new industrial policy to woo investments

Karnataka Friday unveiled a new industrial policy to attract Rs.5 lakh crore (Rs.5 trillion) from domestic and overseas investors over the next five years.

“The new industrial policy for 2014-19 aims to achieve an industrial growth rate of 12 percent per annum in the state over the next five years (2014-19) and increase the contribution of the manufacturing sector to 20 percent of the state gross domestic product (GSDP) from 17 percent this fiscal,” Chief Minister Siddaramaiah told reporters here on the occasion.

Taking a bold stand in the fight against breast cancer, online lingerie store Zivame.com has announced that it will get a 1,000 women from country’s rural areas screened for breast and cervical cancer.

Zivame.com has tied up with Bangalore-based NGO Milaap to take the initiative forward, and is also working with Gramalaya Microfin Foundation and Harshamitra Women Screening Wing to set up several medical camps across Trichy district.

The company is also raising awareness among general public about breast cancer through e-mailers and social media, said a statement.

We have no objection to shift Jayalalithaa to Tamil Nadu: Karnataka Home Minister

Karnataka Government will have no objection to shift AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa to Tamil Nadu from a jail here if the neighbouring state makes a request through courts, Home Minister K J George said today.

“If there is a proposal coming before the court from the Tamil Nadu government, we have no objection to shifting (Jayalalithaa),” George told PTI here.

Sugarcane price issue: BJP members stage dharna in Assembly

BJP MLAs today staged a dharna in the Assembly demanding action against sugar mill owners for not paying the State Advisory Price of Rs 2,500 per tonne with an additional incentive of Rs 150 to sugarcane farmers.

Raising the issue, Opposition BJP leader Jagadish Shettar criticised the government for not taking action against mill owners even six months after the advisory price was announced in the winter session of legislature at Belgaum in November.

Assembly pays tributes to Munde

Karnataka Assembly today paid tributes to late BJP leader Gopinath Munde, who died in a road mishap recently, and described him as the leader of the backward class communities.

“Munde was a leader of backward class communities, including Banjaras,” Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said paying homage to Munde in the State Assembly on the opening of the 27-day legislature session here.

He said Munde was a dynamic leader, who succeeded in whatever position given by BJP or the government of the day.

Founder members of Al-Ameen Educational Society, Bangalore, Dr. Mumtaz Ahmed Khan and J. Shafiullah conducted an educational tour to a town, Naba in Punjab, recently.

Mariam Kouser case: Govt. nods for reimbursement

Now, the Karnataka government is ready to fund Mariam Kouser’s treatment. She is still undergoing treatment at Manipal Hospital in Bangalore. Earlier, she had met with an accident and fractured her left elbow. She was operated upon at Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedic in Bangalore on December 13, 2013, due to medical negligence she slipped into coma.

BJP asks Governor to reject Karnataka Govt recommendation

BJP’s state unit on Sunday requested Governor H R Bhardwaj to reject the Karnataka Government’s reported recommendation to nominate five party functionaries to the Legislative Council, alleging that it is violation of the Constitution.

A BJP delegation headed by former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jagadish Shettar met the Governor and submitted a memorandum to him, saying they were given to understand that the government has proposed the names to the post of Legislative Council members under Article 171 of the Constitution.

WPI condemns hike in rail fare and freight charges

Welfare Party of India (WPI), Karnataka, strongly opposed the Narendra Modi government for the sharp increase in rail fair and freight charges.

Mr. Taher Hussain, general secretary of the party said in a statement that, the BJP government has begun delivering ‘good governance’ and ‘people-friendly policies’ with the highest ever increase in rail fares in the history of Indian Railways.

With only few days left to unveil the railway budget, this increase shows disrespect to the very institution of the parliament, he added.

Kharge questions ‘sudden’ hike in rail fares

Congress leader in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge questioned the decision of NDA government to resort to “sudden” hike in rail and freight fares.

Former railway minister said the proposal for the hike was placed before him when he was the minister but he had put it on hold as the Lok Sabha polls were round the corner and he wanted the new government to take a decision without burdening the common people.

However, the government had now taken a sudden decision, he told reporters here and questioned the urgency to do so ahead of the budget session of Parliament.

Anna Hazare, U R Rao to be conferred honorary doctorate

Online filing of sale deals opposed by traders

On Thursday, Karnataka State Tax Advocates Association opposed the recent notification by Commissioner for Commercial Taxes in which it has been made mandatory for all traders having annual turnover of Rs 50 lakh to upload their sales transaction on the official website.

It is an impossible task for most traders as they have more than 1,000 invoices every month and it is not possible to get them scanned and uploaded on the website said Association President S K Nath.
