Alleged IS twitter account handler Mehdi’s police custody extended by 15 days

Police custody of alleged handler of the most influential pro-Islamic State (IS) Twitter account Mehdi Masroor Biswas was extended by 15 days by a court here today.

“His police custody has been extended by 15 days till January 2. We had asked for 25 days,” Joint Commissioner of Police Hemanth Nimbalkar told PTI.
Biswas was presented before the session’s court here at the end of his five-day police remand.

Meanwhile, Biswas’s parents who are in the city from West Bengal met their son and the city Police Commissioner M N Reddi.

Karnataka: One-day-old girl child found abandoned

An unidentified newborn girl was found abandoned at the roadside in nearby Puttur on Thursday.

The one-day-old girl weighing about 2.4 kg was found on a stone block without any clothing by a woman residing nearby who heard her wails and took her to a nearby hospital with the help of the local people, police said.

The infant has been put on ventilator in the neo-natal intensive care unit of Regional Advanced Paediatric Care Centre (RAPCC) in Wenlock Hospital here.

Balakrishna Rao, medical officer at the RAPCC said the baby was not mentally or physically challenged and was recovering.

Peshawar attack shouldn’t be given credence: Bangalore police chief

Bangalore Police Commissioner M N Reddi on Thursday said that the Peshawar terror attack should not be given too much credence as the context in which that incident took place was entirely different from that of India.

“It is far-fetched to think that what happened in Peshawar should lead to fear in our minds. It’s natural that it will lead to that, but I don’t think we should give much credence as the context in which that happened out there is entirely different from the context we find ourselves in,” said Reddi.

Investigations into the allegations of abetting terrorism against 24-year-old engineer Mehdi Masroor Biswas just got more intense, Mikjael Biswas and Mamtaz begum had landed in the city on Tuesday night

Mr. Reddi said, the parents met Police Commissioner M.N. Reddi with an appeal to carry out a fair probe. “They claimed that their son is innocent. I have assured a fair probe.”

The Bengaluru Police on Wednesday confirmed that the parents of the software engineer who was arrested last week for operating a pro-ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) Twitter account, have arrived in the city, adding that they have requested an audience with the Police Commissioner.

“The parents of the accused were not called by the police. They have come to Bengaluru on their own and called me up, asking to meet me and I have agreed to do so at an appropriate place and time,” Bengaluru Police Commissioner MN Reddi told the media.

Security has been beefed up at schools and colleges in the national capital New delhi and in the country’s IT capital Bengaluru following a brutal attack in an army-run school at Peshwar.

Walmart Foundation trains 12,000 women in India

Global retail giant’s Walmart Foundation trained nearly 12,000 women with life skills in 30 factories across Gujarat, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu with Swasti Health Resources Centre of the Catalyst Group, a company official said Tuesday.

“As we are committed to the people in our supply chain, our skill training is helping to empower women in India since we launched the ‘Women in Factories’ programme in 2012,” Walmart vice-president (global sourcing) Nancy Kielty told reporters here.

Security stepped up in Bengaluru

n the wake of recent threats that the city will be the next target for Sydney like hostage crisis and today’s terror attack on a Pakistan’s army school, police have increased security at certain important places here.

“There is no need for public to be scared or worried because of this threat… we have conducted anti-sabotage checks at some vital places,” DCP Central (Bengaluru) Sandeep Patil told reporters here.

He said, “We have also posted police personnel at certain important places like malls. We have identified important places and taken precautionary measures.”

Demand for renaming MIA

The Akhila Bharatha Tulu Okkoota has demanded that Mangaluru International Airport be renamed as ‘Tulunadu International Airport’.

The demand was made at the valedictory function of ‘Vishwa Tuluvere Parba 2014’ held in association with Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy at Sahyadri Campus in Adyar here last evening.

They also requested the state government to set up a high level committee headed by chief secretary to make an appropriate decision on the inclusion of Tulu in Schedule VIII of Indian Constitution.

Karnataka: BJP, JDS members stage walkout over cane growers issue

The BJP and JDS members on Monday staged a walkout from the Karnataka Assembly over state government’s alleged failure to ensure payment of Rs 2,500 per tonne to cane growers with immediate effect.

Raising the issue, Opposition BJP Leader Jagadish Shettar alleged that the government has failed to commit itself to pay Rs 2,500 per tonne to sugarcane growers and charged that it was in favour of sugar lobby.

Dubbing the government “anti-farmers”, he said it has been talking about taking action against mill owners but in reality nothing had happened.

Police seeks more details from Twitter on IS account handler

Intensifying its investigation into the alleged handler of pro-Islamic State (IS) Twitter account Mehdi Masroor Biswas, city police has asked for more details regarding ShamiWitness account from the micro blogging site, which are crucial to the probe.

“Twitter Inc has started responding to our queries. I have sought more details regarding ShamiWitness which are crucial to investigation,” DCP Crime (Bengaluru) Abhishek Goyal said.

Police has said the investigators are looking into “every possible” connection of Biswas with the ISIS’ “virtual and actual world”.

Bengaluru artist gives musical tribute to ‘Nirbhaya’

A Bengaluru-based music artist has recomposed a Michael Jackson song as a tribute to the December 2012 Delhi gangrape victim.

The song called “Man in the Mirror,” originally sung by the King of Pop in 1987, has now been recomposed by Pawan Kumar or “J” as a tribute to the 23-year-old Delhi braveheart, whose brutal rape and subsequent death shook the nation.

Kumar today released the first official Michael Jackson cover of the song from India and dedicated it to the para-medical student.

Bengaluru on high alert over terror threat tweets

Bengaluru has been put of high alert Monday following tweets on Twitter threatening a repeat of the hostage drama at a cafe in Australia’s Sydney, Karnataka Home Minister K.J. George said.

“A high alert has been sounded in Bengaluru after police received tweets on its Twitter account threatening to re-enact a Sydney-like hostage drama in the city,” George told reporters at Belgavi, about 500km from here, where the 10-day winter session of the state legislature is underway since Dec 9.

Apollo setting up third hospital in Bengaluru

India’s leading integrated healthcare provider Apollo Hospitals is setting up its third super specialty hospital in the city with 200 beds at an investment of Rs.150 crore, a top official said Monday.

“The super specialty hospital in the city’s northwest suburb is a greenfield project, which will increase our capacity to 1,050 beds from 850 at two similar hospitals in Bengaluru and one in Mysuru,” Apollo group chairman Prathap C. Reddy told reporters here.

Mehdi Masroor Biswas’s 60% of followers non-Muslims: Govt

More than 60% followers of MehdiMasroorBiswas, the Bengaluru-based executive, who was running a pro-ISIS twitter account, were non-Muslims and a majority of his Muslim followers were from western countries, particularly the UK, home minister Rajnath Singh said.

Making a suo motu statement in Lok Sabha, he said 24-year-old Mehdi was arrested on December 13 and during interrogation, he indicated that his activities were limited to posting and reposting of pro-ISIS material on his twitter account and social media sites and he has denied having recruited any person for ISIS.

Sydney hostage crisis: One employee is ours, says Infosys

Indian-owned software multinational Infosys on Monday confirmed that that one of its employees is among those taken hostage by an alleged gunman at the Lindt Cafe in Sydney.

“We can confirm that one Infosys employee is among the hostages at the Lindt Cafe in Sydney. We are also in the process of confirming the whereabouts of all our other employees in the city,” a statement by the company said.

Infosys further states that the family of the employee has been informed and that the company will extend all possible support to them during the crisis.

Investigators looking into possible Biswas’ links with ISIS: Official

Investigators are looking into “every possible” connection of alleged handler of pro-Islamic State (IS) Twitter account Mehdi Masroor Biswas with the ISIS’ “virtual and actual world”, a top police official said on Sunday.

Preliminary investigation showed Biswas was a propagandist of ISIS ideology and “has been instrumental in influencing minds against our friendly nations against whom ISIS is at war,” the official said.

Police officer receives threat message after arrest of IS Twitter a/c handler

A senior police officer has received a threat in connection with the arrest of Mehdi Masroor Biswas, the alleged handler of the most influential pro-Islamic State (IS) Twitter account, even as the latter was remanded in five-day police custody.

Youth has confessed to operating pro-IS Twitter account: Karnataka DGP

Karnataka Director General of Police (DGP) L. Pachau on Saturday said a 24-year -old youth hailing from West Bengal has confessed to operating a pro- Islamic State (IS) Twitter account.

“Mehdi Masroor Biswas has confessed to the fact that he was operating a Shami witness twitter account for the last many years. FIR has been registered against Mehdi Masroor Biswas, who has been arrested,” Pachau told a press conference here.

Even police is unsafe, youth held for sending lewd calls to control room

The accused has allegedly harassed women police personnel for 11 days, 22-year-old youth, who repeatedly called police control room, starting from November 30 to December 10. He has made exactly 222 calls from his mobile phone number.

The Cubbon Park police investigated the case and identified the accused as Vinay, a provision store owner from Ramnagaram. Unable to bear the mental harassment from the unidentified caller lightly. The accused used to make calls to 100 late in the night and spoke to more than 20 female cops in vulgar language.
