Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh today exhorted law and order officials in Bengaluru to maintain a strict vigil over the entry of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants into the city and also asked them to take action to address the issue of discrimination against people from the Northeast.

Reviewing the law and order situation in the state capital with officials at the airport in Bengaluru as he wrapped up his visit to Karnataka, Singh stressed on the need for having a “people- friendly and tough police” to take “strong action against criminals and terrorists”.

Indians deported from Turkey let off with warning

A nine-member Indian group, which was deported from Turkey and detained here on arrival Jan 30, has been set free with a stern warning against making attempts in future to engage in social activities in areas controlled by the Islamic State militant group, a top police official said Monday.

“We let them off, as no incriminating material (documents) or any evidence was found against them. No case was registered but they were warned against making such attempts in future,” Bengaluru police commissioner M.N. Reddi told reporters here.

Infosys partners with Cornell for hospitality research

Global software major Infosys Ltd is partnering with Cornell University in the US for high quality research in hospitality industry.

“As part the agreement with Cornell University, we are joining its school of hotel administration’s centre for hospitality research advisory board to understand problems clients in hospitality industry face and design industry research,” the company said in a statement here Monday.

Ten Bengaluru students allegedly tonsured

Around ten students of a private school in Bengaluru were allegedly tonsured by the hostel warden as punishment.

“Yesterday, we have received a complaint at the Cubbon Park Police Station, wherein two children have given a complaint, saying that they were studying in one of the private schools in Bengaluru and staying in the hostel facilities provided by the school, and on the 28th, one of the student’s hair was forcibly shaven off, as well as on 30th, the other child’s hair was shaven off,” DCP Central ( Bengaluru) Sandeep Patil told the media here.

Karnataka: Opposition set to corner Congress govt in legislature

Opposition is expected to corner the Congress Government in the state during the legislature session beginning tomorrow on a host of issues, including the Arkavathi Layout land de-notification, on which they have targeted Chief Minister Siddaramaih alleging irregularities.

The session also comes at a time when the Chief Minister himself is facing the heat within his own party with complaints over his style of functioning and a section of legislators up in arms against him on the issue.

Ten students tonsured for allegedly not attending classes

About ten students of a school with boarding facility here were allegedly tonsured by their caretakers allegedly for not attending classes regularly, police said on Sunday.

“We have received a written complaint that students heads were tonsured forcefully,” DCP Central (Bengaluru) Sandeep Patil told reporters here.

He said the complaint had been received and after taking legal opinion, further action would be taken.

Compulsory Kannada row: Karnataka Govt to amend Education Act

State Government today decided to amend the Karnataka Compulsory Primary Education Act, 2012 to impart primary education in Kannada in the state and strengthen its case before the Supreme Court where a related case is pending.

“We have decided to amend the present act to impart primary education in Kannada. The proposed amendment will strengthen the state’s case when the apex court takes up the curative petition,” Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandra told reporters during a cabinet briefing.

Brahmos integration with Sukhoi by March

India will integrate the air version of Brahmos supersonic cruise missile with Sukhoi fighters of the Indian Air Force (IAF) by March, an official said Wednesday.

“Integration of Brahmos with Sukhois of the IAF is on and will be completed by March, as two of them are being integrated at our Nashik complex,” state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd’s (HAL) outgoing chairman R.K. Tyagi told reporters here.

BrahMos Aerospace, an India-Russia joint venture, developed and test-fired the cruise missile July 8, 2014 from the integrated test range at Chandipur in Balasore district of Odisha.

160 fall sick after having ‘prasad’ in religious fair in West Bengal

An estimated 160 people were hospitalised after having ‘khichdi’ at a religious fair at Arambagh in Hooghly district on Tuesday night.

Arambagh Municipalty Chairman Swapan Nandy said the ailing persons were now out of danger and being discharged since today.

Nandy said the devotees had consumed ‘khichdi’ as ‘prasad’ at the ‘Pir Mela’ and started complaining of stomach ache and vommiting.

He said the pulses used in the khichuri was suspected to have been coloured and sent for test.

A district health officer said a medical team has been sent to the area.

Wipro to co-develop software for smart devices

Indian IT bellwether Wipro Ltd will jointly develop software for smart and connected devices with German firm Software AG.

“The software solution will enable enterprises to understand how customers use their products in real-time and through streaming analytics,” the company said in a statement here Tuesday.

The joint platform will also provide real-time actionable intelligence for the Internet of Things (IoT) market.

Another Bodo militant wanted by Assam police held in Bengaluru

Another NDFB(S) militant, wanted in connection with the violence in Assam in December last year, was arrested here on Monday, police said.

27-year old Sanju Bordoloi, the organising secretary of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Songbijit), was arrested from his hideout in the Electronic City based on specific inputs.

He is the second NDFB(S) militant to be arrested here since last week after the detention of Birkhang Basumatary, also allegedly involved in the Assam violence, on January 23.

De-notification row: Digvijay pats Karnataka CM for judicial probe

Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh on Saturday praised Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for setting up a judicial commission to look into Arkavathi Layout land de-notification, an issue on which the Opposition has targeted him alleging irregularities.

“I have also come to know about this issue…I would give credit to the Chief Minister who immediately set up a judicial commission to look into the issue of de-notification of notified land by the BDA (Bangalore Development Authority,” Singh told reporters here.

Artisans in Karnataka’s Channapatna area are painstakingly crafting traditional wooden toys to be gifted to U.S. President Barack Obama and his family during their visit to the country to attend the Republic Day celebrations.

The town of Channapatna is popular for its wooden toys. The toys are made of special wood in a variety of colours. The artisans use the ivory component of a special tree grown in old Mysore for making these toys and dolls, which are also exported worldwide.

Prohibitory orders ahead of mining baron Janardhan Reddy’s release

Prohibitory orders were promulgated today in about half-a-km radius around the Parappana Agrahara prison here ahead of former minister and mining baron G Janardhan Reddy’s release from jail.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday had granted bail to Reddy, who is an accused in the illegal mining case involving his Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC).

Reddy, facing several criminal cases, was arrested in 2011.

Police custody of IM operatives extended till Feb 3

Police custody of four suspected operatives of the banned Indian Mujahideen, arrested recently, was extended till February 3 by a court here today.

“Court has extended the Police custody of Aafaaque, Abdus Saboor, Riyas Syeedi & Saddam Hussain upto February 3, 2015 in IM Explosive Seizure case,” DCP Crime (Bengaluru) Abhishek Goyal in a tweet said.

The Police custody of all the four suspects ended today.

SC grants bail to Karnataka mining baron Janardhan Reddy

The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted bail to mining baron and former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhan Reddy, who is an accused in the illegal mining case involving his Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC).

The apex court granted bail after CBI submitted that the investigation in the case involving Reddy is complete and both the chargesheet as well as the supplementary chargesheet have been filed.
