Quit or face sack, seniors tell Ponnala

Hyderabad, June 14: Senior Congress leaders and some MPs of the Telangana region have demanded that Major Irrigation Minister Ponnala Laxmaiah resign owning responsibility for irregularities in the State Government’s prestigious “Jalayagnam’’ programme in the region.

They said that if the minister was not willing to resign, Chief Minister K Rosaiah should remove him from the Cabinet.

Karimnagar lad turns space scientist

Karimanagar, June 14: Young Harish Rao has done Karimnagar proud. He was part of the team which made 1-kg mini satellite, Pico, which will be put in orbit on July 28.

The team with students drawn from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka was guided by the Indian Space Research Organisation, Bengaluru in their mission.

Harish Rao, a Karimnagar lad, is currently studying Mechanical engineering third year at the KITS, Ramtek in Nagpur. He briefed about the satellite to the students of Vindhya Valley High School at a programme in Karimnagar today.

Hyderabad, June 14: PCC president D Srinivas has asked the party cadres to spread the message that the party leaders were united and would be able to deliver Telangana.

Talking with reporters after a review of the poll preparedness, he said told the district leaders not to worry about the warnings of the TRS or JAC. He said they were doing their job and there was no need to spell out their stand everyday to the media.

CPI to introspect on setbacks to Left

Hyderabad, June 14: Acknowledging that the popularity of the Left was waning in West Bengal, the CPI national council has decided to introspect on the reasons.

With the Left Front suffering serious setbacks in the recent local body elections in that State, the CPI decided to go into a huddle in view of the Assembly elections there next year, national secretariat member Shameem Faizi told reporters here today.

He said that as the CPM was leading the Left alliance in the West Bengal, the CPI expected that it too would undertake a similar exercise.

Hyderabad, June 14: Major Irrigation Minister Ponnala Laxmaiah dismissed demands by a section of senior Congress leaders that he resign owning responsibility for corruption in the State Government’s prestigious `Jalayagnam’’ programme started by the late YS Rajasekhara Reddy.

He said the allegations were baseless and so the question of quitting did not arise.

AP student feared murdered in US

Hyderabad, June 14: A 22-year-old student from Tandur in Ranga Reddy district was found dead, allegedly murdered, in a pond on a US university campus on Saturday.

Adarsh Johnson, pursuing an MS at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (UMHB) in Belton, Texas, had been missing from his room since Friday and his body was found in the pond Saturday evening, reports reaching here said.

The parents of the student alleged that their son had been receiving threat calls ever since he became the leader of the university’s Student Welfare Association.

Tremors rock coastal AP

Hyderabad, June 14: Mild tremors caused by an earthquake in the Andamans and Nicobar Islands sent people in towns along the AP coast into a tizzy in the early hours of Sunday.

People were jolted out of their sleep at about 1 am when tremors rattled windows and upset household articles. From Srikakulam to Nellore, there was a scare that a tsunami might hit fishing colonies along the coastline.

Several parts of Visakhapatnam experienced tremors. “Tremors came in two spells each of five seconds duration. We were scared,” S Padmavathi of Officials Colony said.

Nine killed in wall collapse in Andhra Pradesh

Hyderabad, June 14: At least nine people were killed and 20 others injured when the wall of a vegetable market collapsed Monday in Andhra Pradesh’s Mahabubnagar district, police said.

The accident took place at Gadwal town. The dead include three women and a child.

Rescue work is on as some more victims are feared trapped under the debris. The incident occurred when the municipal vegetable market was crowded with buyers.

Eye witnesses said the wall had weakened due to rain during the last three days.

The arrested member, identified as B Chandrashekhar, of a three-member action team of the Communist Party of India (Maoist), during his interrogation reportedly told the police that the team led by him was tasked to eliminate politicians and policemen in Andhra Pradesh.

No half-day sessions in state schools

Hyderabad, June 13: The new academic year will see an end to the practice of half-day sessions in government schools in the twin cities.

District education officials said there were over 30 schools where shift system was being followed because of lack of space to accommodate all the students in one session. But it is mandatory that schoolchildren have to spend most of their day time at school.

3-member gang nabbed, antique idols seized

Vijaywada, June 13: In a major catch, the city police nabbed a gang involved in the selling of antique idols here on Saturday and recovered two historical idols from the possession of the gang members. According to Governorpet inspector S Prasada Rao, the three-member gang was headed by one Undrajavarapu Salmon Raju of Palkole in West Godavari district.

BSNL staffer held for recharge coupon theft

Hyderabad, June 11: Two persons, including an employee of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), were arrested today for the Rs 1.43 scam involving the theft of Compact Discs (CDs) containing the Electronic Permanent Index Numbers (EPINs) from the BSNL office at Adarsh Nagar a few months back. Though the accused have encashed more than Rs one crore worth EPINs or more popularly known as recharge coupons, police could recover only Rs 5.6 lakh cash and gold ornaments worth Rs 3.2 lakh from the accused.

Kishan Reddy gets threatening letter

Hydeabad, June 11: “Leave Hyderabad and flee to Hindustan” read the letter received by Bharatiya Janata Party State president G Kishan Reddy a fortnight ago by an outfit styling itself “Islamic Republic of Hyderabad, LashkareTaiba Suicide Bomber Cell”.

A case was registered by the Abids police today.

Police, however, ruled out the involvement of any Islamic militant outfit behind the letter and said a land dispute between two communities in the Old City could be behind the threat and since Kishan Reddy was BJP president, the missive was addressed to him.

Railway cops to spot, save victims soon

Hyderabad, June 11: The Railway police are all set to train their personnel to identify women and children being spirited away by train from Andhra Pradesh to various destinations by human traffickers to various destinations.

“We are focusing on this aspect and all our personnel will be trained to identify victims and rescue them,” deputy inspectorgeneral (DIG) of police (Railways) Bhavana Saxena told Express. She said the exercise to sensitise the Railway police had already been taken up in Vijayawada.

GoM for new law to check fraud in income certificates

Hyderabad, June 11: The Group of Ministers on fee reimbursement has decided to bring in a new law to check fraud in the issuance of income certificates and to penalise both those obtaining and issuing them.

Disclosing this to Express, Higher Education Minister D Sridhar Babu said the law would also help in the matter of white cards and other programmes intended for the poor.

Tirumala hundi collection Rs 2.11 cr

Tirumala, June 11: The hundi in Lord Venkateswara temple here had a record collection of offerings from devotees amounting to Rs 2.11 crore today.

According to temple officials, the alltime record of hundi collection in a single day was Rs 2.83 crore which included the single donation of Rs 1 crore by former BJP leader Uma Bharathi. Today’s collection had no such single major donation.
