Biotech growth: Quality infrastructure lacking

Hyderabad, January 24: Complex regulatory procedures, lack of quality infrastructure and rigid labour laws are some of the factors hindering the growth of biotechnology industry in Andhra Pradesh, minister for major industries J Geetha Reddy said today.

She was speaking at a seminar on ‘Bridging the gap in biotech-healthcare and agribiotech commercialisation,” organised by the National Research Development Corporation (NRDC), Assocham and Fapcci here today.

Pregnant girl killed by father in Honour killing

Nalgonda, January 24: In a case of honour killing, tribal parents allegedly murdered their 16-year-old daughter after they came to know about her pregnancy out of wedlock.

Inefficient CM reduced to challenging own MLAs: Peddireddy

Tirupati, January 23: Describing the challenge to Kadapa leader YS Jaganmohan Reddy to bring down the government as evidence of frustration, former Minister Peddireddy Ramchandra Reddy lashed out at Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy for asking his party MLAs to resign.

Mr Ramchandra Reddy said that Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy should have initiated disciplinary action against the MLAs if he was so upset with them for taking part in former Kadapa MP YS Jaganmohan Reddy’s protest rallies.

YSR statue pedestal demolished in DL’s constituency

Kadapa, January 23: A pedestal constructed for installation of a statue of late chief minister Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy in Thupalli junction under Maidukuru mandal was demolished by the R&B authorities and police during the midnight of Saturday.

YSR supporters have alleged that the pedestal was demolished at the behest of the Health Minister, Dr D L Ravindra Reddy. YSR supporters wanted to erect his statue with their donations.

However, the authorities said that the statue would be in the way of the road widening plan.

Nagam eyeing Telangana CM post?

Hyderabad, January 22: Telangana Telugu Desam Party Forum (TTDPF) convenor Nagam Janardhan Reddy is smart and appears to be eyeing the chief minister’s post in a separate Telangana state, TDP MLA Motkupalli Narasimhulu didn’t say these words directly but meant as much during his remarks today.

Film director EVV passes away

Hyderabad, January 22: Noted producer-director EVV Satyanarayana, who introduced Pavan Kalyan (‘Akkada Abbai Ikkada Ammayi’) to the silver screen, died here late this night.

Satyanarayana (53), who had been ailing from mouth cancer for sometime, died due to cardiac arrest at Apollo Hospital, Jubilee Hills.

Satyanarayana was born at Korumamidi village in West Godavari district on June 10, 1958. He was admitted to hospital on January 19.

Ex-Union minister SBPBK dead

Hyderabad, January 22: Kapileswarapuram Zamindar and former Union minister of state for agriculture SBPBK Satyanarayana Rao died after a brief illness at a private hospital in Hyderabad today. He was 91. Rao served people in various capacities during his six-decade political life.

Born in a Zamindar’s family at Kapileswarapuram on September 23, 1921,

he worked as a sarpanch from 1953 to 1964, as Panchayat Samithi president from 1959 to 1964 and as East Godavari Zilla Parishad chairman from 1964 to 1976.

HC admits plea against AICTE

Hyderabad, January 22: A writ petition challenging collection of processing fee, including corpus fund, by the All India Council for Technical Education was admitted by the AP High Court today.

Hyderabad, January 22: Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute (BIACH&RI) is back in news, again for wrong reasons. Five employees, who have been terminated from service by the management, were seen locked in heated arguments with the management.

The reason for their sacking: They mobilised other staff members and staged a dharna in front of the chief executive officer’s demanding hike in increments last year.

Vishakapatnam, January 22: Lifting the veil of secrecy over the whereabouts of top Maoist leader Ramakrishna alias RK, police say they have information that RK is hiding in the Andhra-Odisha-Chhattisgarh (AOC) border area and that they have intensified combing operations to catch the most wanted Maoist top gun since yesterday.

RK, the CPI (Maoist) central committee member and AOB chief, had escaped into the ‘safe zone’ after coming within a close range of the police dragnet when he came to meet his wife in the Narayanapatna forest block of Odisha in November last.

Police asked to go slow in Suri case

Hyderabad, January 22: Forty-eight hours before faction leader Maddelacheruvu Suri was shot dead, a telephone call was made to an acquaintance of Pothula Suresh, a trusted aide of slain TDP MLA Paritala Ravi who was arrested in Gujarat recently.

The caller introduced himself as a police officer and “advised” the man to let Suresh know that it wouldn’t be in his interest to apply for bail. “Else, he may unnecessarily become a suspect in a major action (read Suri’s murder) set to take place in a couple of days,” the official warned.

Law to curb bogus societies likely

Hyderabad, January 22: The state government is contemplating to bring forth a new legislation to curb the growth of bogus societies in the coming Assembly session which is likely to begin in the last week of February.

Speaking to reporters here today, handlooms and textiles minister P Shankar Rao said that several bogus and benami weavers welfare cooperative societies had availed themselves of huge loans from the state government corporations but did not repay them.

Rajagopuram not to be demolished

Guntur, January 22: The state government has withdrawn its earlier decision of demolishing the Rajagopuram of Panakala Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple at Mangalagiri, which is stated to be on the verge of collapse.

Following protests from locals against the move to demolish the ancient structure, the endowments commissioner has directed the temple executive officer to submit proposals for strengthening the existing Rajagopuram.

Warangal, January 22: Students of the Kakatiya University have started relay hunger strikes, demanding that the Telangana Bill be immediately introduced in Parliament.

The girl students of the university stood in the forefront of the agitation for Telangana in the University. The University professors visited the hunger strike camp and expressed their solidarity with the students.

‘Unsavoury protest’: Komti’s convoy greeted with slippers, eggs

Adilabad, January 22: Slippers and eggs rained on Minister for Infrastructure, Investments, Ports, Airports and Natural Gas Komatireddy Venkata Reddy’s convoy as it tried to avoid a group of protestors, suspected to be belonging to the Telangana Rashtra Samithi and Bharatiya Janata Party, who were keen to obstruct it in Adilabad district on Friday.

The activists hurled slippers and eggs on the Minister’s convoy even while raising `Jai Telangana’ slogans and tried to block his car.
