Another engg student attempts suicide

Mahabubnagar, February 6: A girl student of the Kottam Engineering College in Konderu under Itikyala mandal of this district, attempted to commit suicide on Saturday.

The student was rushed to the Kurnool government general hospital. Reasons for the suicide attempt were not immediately known.

CPI to block streets on weavers’ problems

Tirupati, February 6: The CPI State secretary, Dr K. Narayana, has said that his party would block all the highways on January 9, in protest against the failure of the government to solve problems of the handloom weavers.

Talking to mediapersons here on Saturday, the CPI leader said the government was neglecting the basic problems confronted by the people because of the political instability prevailing in the State. He said that his party would be launching a series of agitations on the people’s problems.

Seemandhra JAC opposes KCR song in “JAI BOLO TELANGANA”

Vijayawada, February 5: The people in the Seema-Andhra region took strong objection to the song penned by the Telangana Rashtra Samithi president, Mr K Chandrasekhara Rao, for the “Jai Bolo Telangana” movie which was released all over the State on Friday.

Opposing the KCR song “Gaaradi Chestundru”, the members of Nagarjuna University JAC obstructed the film screening in Jairam Theatre in Guntur demanding that the song be deleted. The protestors relented only after the theatre management agreed to remove the song from the film.

Villagers caned at Rachabanda, youth attempts self immolation

Mahabubnagar, February 4: Tension gripped Sunkarapalli village under Madugula mandal of Mahbubnagar district on Friday morning when a youth doused himself with kerosene and attempted to set ablaze demanding the authorities not to conduct Rachchabanda programme. With this, the police intervened and gave a sound thrashing to the boy causing grievous injuries. The youth has been admitted to a hospital.

Vijayawada, February 04: Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy during in-camera meeting with party cadre of ten constituencies at Indira Gandhi municipal stadium here this evening tried to win their confidence.

Addressing party activists, the chief minister said that he would fill nominated posts in various corporations after Assembly session in March.

He told them that he would consult the party leadership before filling the nominated posts to do justice as MLAs and MPs were vying with each other to secure the posts for their supporters.

Now MLAs to have radio frequency identity cards

Hyderabad, February 04: After deciding to provide laptops along with printers and fax machines to all the MLAs, Assembly deputy speaker Nadendla Manohar has now decided to issue new Radio Frequency Identity cards (RFID) to the members on par with the system being implemented in the Parliament.

He also plans to hold a one-day seminar on ‘Understanding of the budget’ to the MLAs during the forthcoming budget session likely to begin on February 17.

The Business Advisory Committee (BAC) would decide the date and time of the seminar.

Tirumala ghat road to be closed temporarily

Tirumala, February 04: The second ghat road from Tirupati to Tirumala will be closed to vehicular traffic from 9 am to 6 pm everyday from February 11 to March 31 for taking up repair works of the road.

According to TTD officials, laying of BT road works costing Rs 4.5 crore will commence from Sri Vinayaka Temple at the beginning of the second ghat road to the GNC toll gate on Tirumala _ a length of about 15.5 km.

The link road works will also be taken up between February 7 and 10. However, there will be no restriction on vehicular traffic during the four days.

‘Visakha Utsav’ again

Vishakapatnam, February 04: District-level festival, ‘Visakha Utsav’, which was not organised since 2006 will restart from this year.

M Kantha Rao, special secretary to Tourism ministry, made an announcement to this effect here today.

It will be held in the last week of February.

The district-level festival was launched by officials in 1996 with an aim to promote all round development of the district, in general and Vizag city, in particular.

GoM to deal with fee reimbursement

Hyderabad, February 04: The state government has set up a group of ministers (GoM) to study the demand of managements of private professional colleges to clear up arrears of fee reimbursement and scholarships.

The ministers will hold discussions with the managements and students to resolve the issue apart from suggesting guidelines to be followed for fee reimbursement and payment of scholarships.

TTD cancels Arjita Sevas on February 10

Tirumala, February 04: The TTD management has cancelled all Arjita Sevas on February 10 in connection with the auspicious Rathasaptami festival on that day. Tens of thousands of devotees from across the country congregate at the hill shrine of Sri venkateswara to take part in the event, popularly known as Surya Jayanti festival.

Plan to make teachers more student-friendly

Karimnagar, February 04: Officials of the education department will soon make surprise visits to schools to check if teachers are handing out corporal punishment to students. This is one of three initiatives being launched by the department in Karimnagar district following reports of teacher cruelty on their wards in recent weeks. The three-point programme will be unfurled in the next few days. Teachers of both private and public schools will be under the scanner of education officials.

Free power to be extended to farmers with Tatkal schemes: CM

West Godavari/Krishna, February 4: Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Thursday promised to extend the facility of free power to farmers having power connections under the ‘Tatkal’ scheme.

Talking to media persons after participating in a Racha Banda programme held at Supriyanpeta in Chintalpudi mandal in the district, the Chief Minister said that over 28 lakh farmers were enjoying free power extended by the government for agriculture.

Railway engine rams into auto, 4 killed

Hyderabad, February 03: A railway engine rammed into an autorickshaw carrying nine passengers at an unmanned railway crossing near Devarakadra in Mahabubnagar district killing four and injuring f ive others.

A woman and a child were among the victims, police said.

The incident took place at an unmanned level crossing at Puttapally village in Devarakadra mandal today evening at around 5.30 p.m.

CWC’s Venkataswamy on the way out?

New Delhi, February 03: Senior Congress leader from Andhra Pradesh G Venkataswamy, who caused a flutter demanding the resignation of Sonia Gandhi as party chief, could be shown the door.

Indications to this effect were available with Union Minister M Veerappa Moily, who is in charge of party affairs in Andhra Pradesh, saying that his “viciousness” in attacking Gandhi and his “arrogance” certainly warranted action.

Replying to questions, Moily, however, did not specify the form of disciplinary action against the 82-year-old former Deputy Leader of the party in the Lok Sabha.
