‘TRS doesn’t need lessons on democracy’

Hyderabad, February 22: Telangana Rasthra Samiti (TRS) leader and legislator KT Rama Rao has targeted the MIM for advising the TRS members to ‘first learn what democracy is’ in the wake of the disturbances in the Assembly on Feb 17.

Speaking at a meeting of the Telangana Private Employees’ Association at Telangana Bhavan here today, he said the TRS didn’t need lessons on democracy from the MIM. In the first place, the MIM did not believe in democracy.

Hold talks with fasting Jagan: Jupudi Prabhakar

Hyderabad, February 22: On Sunday, the third day of his seven-day fast, a large number of students from Osmania, Nagarjuna and other universities across the state called on YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and extended their support to his ‘Fee Poru’ demanding that the State government immediately clear fee reimbursement arrears of BC students.

The State government shouldn’t drag the issue further, the students said. Meanwhile, Jupudi Prabhakar Rao, an MLC, demanded that the State government should send an emissary to Jagan to discuss with him on his demands.

‘AP Governor is anti-Telangana’

Karimnagar, February 22: Karimnagar Lok Sabha member and Congress leader Ponnam Prabhakar said he would soon send a report to the Centre about Governor ESL Narasimhan’s biased attitude against Telangana. He is insulting people of Telangana by disparaging agitation taken up by them demanding bifurcation of the state, he alleged.

Speaking to mediapersons at the R&B guest house here today, the MP said the Governor was sending wrong signals to the Centre by neglecting the aspirations of four crore Telanganites.

Hyderabad, February 22: The ‘Chalo Assembly’ rally call given by Telangana Students Joint Action Committee (TSJAC) witnessed widespread violence at several places in the city today with pro-Telangana students going on a rampage by clashing with police and damaging public properties.

Telangana issue surfaces again in Parliament

New Delhi, February 22: Belying expectations of a peaceful budget session, some ruling Congress MPs from Andhra Pradesh Monday created an uproar on the first day of the nearly two-month-long parliament sitting by raising slogans and flashing placards demanding that a separate Telangana state be carved out of the southern state.

About a dozen protesting MPs rose from their seats and shouted slogans to disrupt President Pratibha Patil’s speech to a joint sitting of both houses of parliament.

Andhra to bring new MFI products under Act

Hyderabad, February 22: Sensing foul-play in new products like loan for men and interest-free loans by microfinance institutions (MFI), the Andhra Pradesh government is all set to issue a notification to bring these products under the purview of the new MFI Act.

Microfinance institutions in the state, whose going became tough after the introduction of MFI Act, are now finding new methods to carry on business by introducing fresh products like loans to males and interest-free loans, a senior state government official said.

Chittoor, February 22: Chittoor Congress MLA CK Jayachandra Reddy alias CK Babu, who shifted his loyalty to YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, today levelled serious allegation against chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy that the latter was friendly with those who were trying to eliminate him.

Babu, who was close to the late YS Rajasekhara Reddy, has been keeping a low profile after the latter’s death but a couple of days ago he crossed the Rubicon and jumped on Jagan Mohan Reddy’s bandwagon.

Communal violence erupts in old Tandur

Hyderabad, February 21: Violence erupted in Nandur of Rangareddy district last night when tiff between two youth of same caste took a violent turn.

Giving communal turn to mutual row between two youth of scheduled caste some anti social elements started pelting stones consequently intensifying the situation.

It is said that police taking one-sided action arrested innocent Muslim youth.

Circle inspector Ramesh and SI Tirupati Raja headed by DSP Venkat Swami along with other cops reached place of incident and lathi charged to disperse groups busy in stone pelting.

Coast Guard Academy to be set up in Andhra Pradesh

Guntur, February 21: Government is thinking of setting up a Coast Guard Academy in Andhra Pradesh, Union Minister of State for Defence M M Pallam Raju said here today.

Raju, who was here to attend several local functions, said that there was a proposal to establish a Coast Guard Academy, and Nizampatnam village in Guntur district of the state was being considered as a possible location.

He also said a 3-tier security system was in place to guard the 7500 km long coastline of the country.

Andhra CM speaks to Chidambaram about collector’s abduction

Hyderabad, February 19:Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy today appealed to the Centre to make efforts for the early release of Malkangiri district Collector Ravella Vineel Krishna, who has been abducted by the Maoists.

Reddy spoke to the Union Home Minister P Chidambaram and requested him to use his good offices for the early return of the IAS officer, who hails from Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh, a release from the state government said.

Seven youths held for ‘stealing’ computers

Khammam, February 18: The Khammam rural police on Thursday arrested seven students, including five engineering students, on charges of stealing computers from the educational institutions in and around the town.

According to the police, a patrol team of the rural police station nabbed seven youth while they were moving under suspicious circumstances near a roadside hotel on the outskirts of the town in the morning.

The police recovered eight computers, and three laptops besides other computer peripherals worth about Rs. 3 lakh from their possession.

TRS has shamed us: Ministers

Hyderabad, February 18: Cutting across the regional divide, Ministers unequivocally condemned the behaviour of the TRS legislators in and outside the House.

Led by senior Ministers — Anam Ramanarayan Reddy and K. Jana Reddy– , the Ministers expressed their utter dismay over the way the incidents unfolded in the Assembly. Recalling the protests during the Governor’s address in the past when members conveyed their resentment by remaining in their places, the Ministers said the behaviour of the TRS MLAs made the legislators hang their heads in shame.

Adivasis attack ITDA office in Utnoor

Adilabad, February 18: Demanding immediate stoppage of DSC appointments in the Agency area, the Adivasis attacked the ITDA office in Utnoor in the district on Thursday.

The Adivasis went berserk and hurled stones at the office building. They also ransacked the furniture in the office and destroyed glass panes. The ITDA employees used tables as a cordon to save the district Collector, Mr Venkateswarlu, who was present in the office, from the invading missiles.

Work on canal begins

Adilabad, February 17: Adilabad district in-charge and Minister for Infrastructure and Investments, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy on Wednesday laid foundation stone for the Rs. 22 crore lining works on the right canal of Gaddennavagu project near Bhainsa town. Major Irrigation Minister P. Sudershan Reddy said the government was seized of the issue of pending compensation to oustees of Gaddenna and SRSP projects. He said it has already released Rs. 12 crore of the Rs. 25 crore required to settle all claims.

HIV-infected woman poisons daughters, ends life

Ongole, February 17: In a tragic incident, a 35-year-old woman, said to be infected with HIV, committed suicide after poisoning her two daughters here on Wednesday. The Talluka police said investigation revealed that the woman, a construction worker living in the Venkateswara colony, took the extreme step after giving rat poison to her daughters, aged 10 and 3 years, as she did not want to leave them behind to fend for themselves. She is survived by husband Krishna (45) who was also said to be infected by HIV, according to Assistant Superintendent of Police R. Jaya Lakshmi.

Kakinada, February 17: A Maoist couple surrendered before Eluru range DIG G. Surya Prakasa Rao here on Wednesday.

Kalimela Balaraju alias Bhagat alias Rakesh, 27, who served the Communist Party of India (Maoist) for 14 years and responsible for the killing of 39 policemen in various exchanges of fire, and his wife Deku Beemu alias Sunita, 24, who had been with the Jana Natya Mandali dalam of the party for the last eight years expressed anguish over the strategies being implemented by the senior leaders of the Moist party during their interaction with the media.

Weavers observe bandh demanding exemption from FSA

Karimnagar, February 17: Sircilla textile town bandh, called by powerloom weavers on Wednesday protesting imposition of electricity FSA (Fuel surcharge adjustments) on power looms, was near total and peaceful.

All the 33,000 and odd powerlooms stopped production of fabric on the looms. Traders also observed bandh in support of the weavers.

Small-scale industry

The weavers had been observing relay hunger strike for the last 13 days demanding exemption for the powerloom sector from the FSA charges by considering their trade as a small-scale industry.

Jagan to stage week-long fast

Kadapa, February 17: Former Kadapa MP Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy on Wednesday announced his decision to stage a week-long hunger strike in Hyderabad from February 18 in order to exert pressure on the government to release adequate funds for fee reimbursement and bail out students who were in a quandary as examinations were round the corner.

Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy, who earlier planned a day-long protest at Hyderabad on February 18, remarked that the government might not respond to a token protest. He hoped his week-long protest would make the Central and State governments act in a sane manner.
