JNTUK to open its campus in London

Kakinada, March 14: Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University-Kakinada (JNTUK) will soon set up its campus in London. The proposal came up for discussion when JNTUK vice-chancellor Allam Appa Rao visited London at the invitation of Ashley School of Management. London Mayor Colin Ellar urged Rao to set up JNTUK campus in the United Kingdom for the benefit of students of Indian origin. The Mayor lauded the advanced courses and research programmes of JNTUK.

Left parties: Centre is diluting welfare scheme

Hyderabad, March 14: “There is a need to discuss the cash transfer scheme and the Aadhar Card Bill in Parliament,” Communist Party of India ( Marxist) state secretary B V Raghavulu said.

He alleged that the Centre was trying to dilute the Public Distribution System (PDS) and social welfare programmes by introducing Cash Transfer Scheme.

4 bridges to come up in Guntur city

Guntur, March 14: Finally, the Railway Board has given green signal for construction of railway under bridges (RUBs) at the level crossings at Syamala Nagar, Nehrun Nagar and Kankaragunta in the city and a railway over bridge (ROB) at Sanjeevaiah Nagar to ease traffic congestion in Guntur city. The proposals had been pending for the past two and half decades.

The Indian Railways and the Roads and Buildings Department have agreed to share the project cost.

Kadapa, March 14: YS Jagan Mohan Reddy unveiled the YSR Congress Party’s flag at a simple function here today. The flag, in blue, white and green, has a picture of the late chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy in the middle. Around YSR’s smi l ing face, nine pet schemes launched by him have been mentioned – housing, pavala vaddi, oldage pensions, Rs 2-a-kg rice, health insurance, Jalayagnam, free-power, education and land distribution.

Earlier, Jagan Mohan Reddy along with his mother Vijayamma reached the YSR’s memorial in Idupulapaya and paid tributes to Reddy.

Police in no hurry to arrest KCR, Kodandaram

Hyderabad, March 14: Fourten fresh cases were registered against pro-Telangana activists today by the city police two days after the Million March in which unprecedented violence took place on the Tank Bund. With this, the total number of cases registered has gone up to 30.

On the other hand, though cases were registered against TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao, TRS MLA Harish Rao and TJAC convenor Prof M Kodandram for conspiracy, police appear to have developed cold feet in arresting them.

Kodandaram blames government for violence

Hyderabad, March 14: Telangana Political Joint Action Committee (JAC) chairman Prof M Kodandaram today held the State government responsible for the incidents that took place on the Tank Bund during the Million March on March 10.

Speaking to reporters here, he said the government did not consider their request to allow them to hold the march peacefully. The repression of T-agitators resulted in such incidents, he said.

Speakers demand repeal of sedition law

Hyderabad, March 14: Demanding immediate release of Dr. Binayak Sen unconditionally, who has been sentenced to life term under Section 124 A of the Indian Penal Code, speakers and advocates at a seminar on sedition, demanded the government to repeal Section 124 A from the Indian Penal Code.

80 percent Andhras favour bifurcation: VHR

Hyderabad, March 14: Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member V Hanumantha Rao has appealed to Seemandhra leaders belonging to the Congress and other political parties not to make provocative statements or false propaganda that Seemandhra people will be driven away from the region after formation of Telangana state.

Talking to reporters here today, Rao said lakhs of Telugu people were living in Chennai even after Andhra was separated from the then Madras state and the subsequent formation of Andhra Pradesh.

High command’s emissary coming

Hyderabad, March 14: The long boycott of the Legislative Assembly and Council by Congress MLAs and MLCs from the Telangana region seems to have worked with the party high command which has decided to send an emissary here to convince them of the need to end the boycott.

The emissary, senior leader and AP coordinator PJ Kurien, will shortly have a meeting with the Telangana ministers, MLAs and MLCs here and convey to them the high command’s thinking on the issue of Telangana.

Protest relaunched against thermal power plant

Srikakulam, March 14: Villagers, under the banner of Kakarapalli Thermal Plant Vyatireka Porata Samiti, today re-launched the relay hunger strike at Vadditandra village in Santabommali mandal against the proposed thermal power plant of East Coast Energy Private Ltd at Kakarapalli in Srikakulam district.

On Feb 28, a large number of policemen entered the villages surrounding the project site and arrested those sitting on hunger strike. The police fired rubber bullets to disperse the agitators who turned violent.

Two villagers died from bullet injuries and several others were injured.

Man burns lover, her dad, son

Anantapur, March 14: A spurned lover burnt alive the woman with whom he had an affair and her family members at Podaralla village in BK Samudram mandal late last night.

The woman Subbalakshmi (28), her father Nagamuni (58) and her son Srinivasulu (9) succumbed to the burns while her mother Kondamma and sister Chandrika are battling for life.

The accused has been identified as Manjunatha (32), a weaver of the same village.

AP Congress suspends Jagan loyalist

Hyderabad, March 14: The Andhra Pradesh Congress on Monday suspended from the party a YS Jagan Mohan Reddy loyalist who was working against the official Congress candidate in the Legislative Council elections.

K Govardhan Reddy, chairman of Nellore district zilla parishad, was placed under suspension by state party chief D Srinivas.

Responding to his suspension, Govardhan Reddy said he welcomed it.

“I feel Jagan’s YSR Congress Party is the real Congress. I will continue to work for Jagan, who is the son of our late leader YS Rajasekhara Reddy,” he said.

Medak poised for industrial growth

Sangareddy, March 14: Being nearer to the State capital, Medak district is once again poised for industrial expansion.

Few days back Major Industries Minister J. Geetha Reddy announced that industries major Mahindra and Mahindra would be expanding its production plant with an estimated investment of Rs. 250 crore.

It will be completed within five years in phased manner and provide employment for more than 1,500 people locally in addition to senior technical staff. Ancillary units will also come up, thereby providing indirect employment.

BJP seeks white paper on land allotments

Hyderabad, March 14: State BJP president G. Kishan Reddy has demanded that the government publish a white paper, providing details of the land allotted and used by various companies and SEZs in the last six years in the State.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, he urged Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy to review the allotments made to various companies, including those in mining and real estate sectors, the investments made and to take back the unused land. He said that in most cases, only 5-10 per cent of the allotted land was utilised.

CPI condemns Lagadapati’s remarks

Hyderabad, March 14: The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Sunday condemned Congress MP Lagadapati Rajagopal’s remarks seeking action against its party leaders suspecting their role in the vandalism of statues on Tank Bund.

In a letter to Mr. Rajagopal, CPI State Secretary K. Narayana attributed the Congress MP’s comments to “his political ignorance”. The CPI had a clear stand on Telangana at the national and local levels unlike the Congress which had mutually contradictory views in Telangana and other regions.

Kiran, DS to meet Telangana Congress MLAs today

Hyderabad, March 14: Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy and APCC president D. Srinivas will hold a crucial meeting with the Telangana Congress MLAs on Monday to persuade the latter to end their boycott of Assembly.

Sources said Congress MLAs deferred their scheduled meeting on Sunday following information that the Chief Minister and APCC chief would interact with them. The party legislators from Telangana had announced their intention to stay away from the House till Saturday.

MP’s name missing from voters’ list

Vizinagaram, March 14: Polling for the MLC (graduate constituency) held on Sunday in Vizianagaram district passed off peacefully. According to preliminary reports received by District Revenue Officer Assistant Returning Officer Y. Narasimha Rao, out of a total 40,739 voters, only 20,261 have exercised their franchise thus registering a percentage of 49.7.

Many a number of graduates were seen complaining that their names were not in the list.

Temporary health cards issued

Sangareddy, March 14: In a move to help those who need Arogyasri cards for medical treatment, the district administration has been issuing temporary health cards. These cards are being issued with the endorsement of the mandal Tahsildars and three copies were made. While one copy was handed over to the beneficiary, one copy was kept with the Arogyasri office located at the Collectorate while the remaining copy was sent to Arogyasri Trust at Hyderabad.

Hyderabad, March 14: The top brass of Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) was grilled at its executive committee meeting for its “extraordinary” decision of handing over a cheque of Rs. 5 crore to a firm for executing the canopy plan (roofing of Rajiv Gandhi Stadium) without insisting either on a bank guarantee or a proper agreement.

MP fails to find name in voters list

Hyderabad, March 14: Congress MP from Vizianagaram Botcha Jhansi could not exercise her franchise for the poll to the Vizianagaram-Srikakulam-Visakhapatnam Graduates Constituency of the Legislative Council on Sunday.

Reports reaching here said Ms. Jhansi visited the polling station in the Maharaja College in Vizianagaram but failed to find her name. The disappointed MP said she had registered as a voter prior to her marriage and that her surname was Majhi in the degree certificate.

“Except my name, names of all other members of my family are intact,” she pointed out.

Protest over tribal’s death

Sangareddy, March 14: Tension prevailed at Sangareddy for a few hours on Sunday when tribals came in large numbers protesting over the death of a worker at Al-Kabeer company located at Rudraram in Medak district. They held dharnas and rasta rokos in the district headquarters.

No night power cuts, says Kiran

Hyderabad, March 14: Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy has said there would be no power cuts between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. in view of the ongoing Intermediate and other examinations.

Reviewing the power generation and supply in the State with the officials of Energy Department, APTransco , APGenco here on Sunday, Mr. Reddy directed them to ensure seven hour supply for the farm sector with priority to domestic and drinking water supply schemes besides hospitals.
