Congress set to brand ‘traitor’ MLAs

Hyderabad, March 19: Having had the last laugh in the MLC election, the Congress is getting ready for the next move – cracking the whip on ‘traitors’.

The Congress leadership in the state initiated action against its MLAs who sided with Jagan Mohan Reddy and voted against the party’s official nominee Mohammad Jani making things quite difficult for him. Jani survived some anxious moments before finally scraping through.

‘Policy on land allotments will be reviewed’

Hyderabad, March 19: Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Thursday announced that the policy on land allotments to companies will be reviewed. “The government has already conducted two meetings in this regard and will seek suggestions from political parties, experts and other stakeholders before coming up with a revised policy,” he said.

5 non-serving experts on dam safety panel

Hyderabad, March 18: With apprehensions being expressed over the safety of various dams in the state, the government has appointed five non-serving independent experts to the Panel of Experts for Safety Review of Dams.

Geological Survey of India (GSI) former deputy director-general V Balachandran (geology), former chief engineers K Nagendrappa (dam-designing), KV Subba Rao (construction) and MKV Sharma (gates), and KV Ramana Murty (hydrology) will be the members of the expert panel for a period of one year.

MPs urge Krishna to help Tri-Valley students

Hyderabad, March 18: Parliamentarians from Andhra Pradesh including Congress and TDP leaders led by Petroleum Minister S Jaipal Reddy on Thursday called on External Affairs minister SM Krishna and appealed him to take immediate steps to help the students from the state who were duped by the Tri Valley University in US.

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MPs raised the Tri Valley issue during the debate on external affairs in the Lok Sabha. Though, Krishna replied to their queries, the members were not satisfied.

16 Maoist militia members surrender

MLC polls: Kiran steals the show despite Jagan

Hyderabad, March 18: Despite cross-voting by MLAs loyal to former Kadapa MP YS Jagan Mohan Reddy in MLC elections (MLAs’ quota), chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Thursday managed to ensure the victory of all the Congress’ five candidates and helped allies MIM and PRP win one seat each.

At the end, TDP’s Pratibha Bharati and TRS’ Mahaboob Ali lost in the race.

For 10 MLCs seats, there were 12 candidates in the fray. The Congress fielded five, PRP and MIM one each, the TDP three, CPI and TRS one each. The total number of valid votes polled was 293.

Srikakulam, March 18: The family of B Tejaswi, a student of IIT-Bhubaneshwar in Odisha who was run over by a train while she was crossing the track on Wednesday, is trying hard to hide the news of her death from her mother Anuradha. The untimely death of the girl, who hailed from Srikakulam, has left her family in gloom and incontrollable sob.

Along with Tejaswi, another IIT-B student from Hyderabad, D Dinesh, was knocked down by the Khurda Road-Kharagpur Passenger train.

Government rejects JLC probe into YSR land deals

Hyderabad, March 17: The State government yesterday rejected the demand for constitution of a Joint Legislative Committee to probe land allotments to various organisations by the erstwhile YS Rajasekhara Reddy government. The matter is sub-judice as the High Court has taken up the public interest litigation filed by the TDP leaders on the issue, the government said.

20 sub enquiry offices to come up at Tirumala

Tirumala, March 17: Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) executive officer IYR Krishna Rao along with joint executive officer K Bhaskar inspected the site of the proposed model sub-enquiry office near SMC, here today.

Later addressing mediapersons, he said it has been decided to construct a modern sub-enquiry offices in about 20 points in Tirumala with the view to avoid inconvenience to pilgrims seeking information during peak hours and also provide them a stop-gap arrangement in case of nonavailability of accommodation.

Malaria is fast spreading in agency areas

Khammam, March 17: Malaria is fast spreading in tribal villages in Bhadrachalam division due to lack of preventive measures.

Two persons died of Malaria fever in Kunavaram and VR Puram mandals. And people of VR Puram, Kunavaram, Chintur mandals are suffering with malaria for last a few days. The disease is fast spreading in Jeediguppa, Pedamittapalli and Pochavaram villages in VR Puram mandal.

Tribals in these villages allege that anti-larval operations were not being carried out properly. Medical staff also were not visiting the villages regularly, they said.

TDP seeks probe into land deals during YSR rule

Hyderabad, March 17: Alleging irregularities in land allotted to various companies by then Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Wednesday demanded a probe by a joint legislative committee.

The state assembly was adjourned for the day without any business as the main opposition party stalled the proceedings, demanding the constitution of the panel to probe the land deals of 2004-09.

Public hearing on Polavaram irrigation project

Raipur, March 17: After strong objections of Chhattisgarh, the central government has decided to hold a public hearing over a planned irrigation project on Godavari river by neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, the state assembly was informed Wednesday.

“Union Minister for Forest and Environment Jairam Ramesh has agreed to hold a public hearing on Polavaram irrigation project after the Chhattisgarh government strongly put the case before him,” an official statement said.

Sirish likely to be held, his mother in custody

Hyderabad, March 17: Police are likely to arrest Sirish Bharadwaj, the husband of Srija, against whom the latter had complained of harassment a couple of days back.

Following the complaint by Srija, daughter of actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi, Central Crime Station (CCS) sleuths are in the process of gathering evidence against Sirish and his mother, G R Suryamani. Police are collecting the SMSes and mails sent by Srija to her parents about the harassment meted out to her by Sirish in the last few days after recording the victim’s statement on Tuesday.

Efforts on to meet summer demand: CM

Hyderabad, March 17: Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy today informed the state Assembly that the government has taken steps to ensure there are no power cuts in the state during summer this year. “We have booked the southern distribution corridor for 1,000 MW of power in March and 800 MW in April,’’ he said.

Jayasudha too busy to give dates for Congress

Hyderabad, March 17: “Natural actress” and Congress legislator Jayasudha, a Jagan loyalist, on Tuesday showed a streak of defiance before retracting the same within a few hours over the party’s whip for Thursday’s MLC election.

When representatives of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) approached her during the day with a letter, asking her to be available Wednesday and Thursday and follow the party whip during the MLC election by legislators, she simply refused to sign, citing a busy schedule.

Ambati receives letter threatening to kill Jagan

Guntur, March 17: Former Kadapa MP YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s aide and former MLA Ambati Rambabu today received a letter by post along with two samples of cyanide by an anonymous writer who threatened to kill Jagan if he did not stop his anti-government activities.

“The chief minister and we have taken this decision. We will kill Jagan Mohan Reddy using cyanide,” the writer said.

The letter dated March 9 said that they had tolerated the activities of Jagan with utmost patience.

Government makes norms tougher for school bus

Hyderabad, March 17: In the wake of increasing concerns over safety of school children travelling in school buses, the state government has proposed to amend Rule 185 of the Andhra Pradesh Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 putting more emphasis on safety precautions for school and college buses. The officials on Wednesday issued the final notification in this regard and the new norms are likely to be implemented in the next academic year.
