Car wheel breaks loose, Trivedi has close shave

Hyderabad, April 04: Senior IPS officer Rajiv Trivedi had a close shave yesterday when one of the wheels of his bullet-proof Ambassador car broke loose and went rolling down the road but the driver managed to control the vehicle in the nick of time.

The officer had to spend nearly 40 minutes in a roadside lodge before another vehicle was sent for him. It is learnt that the wheel hub broke due to the heavy weight of the car.

Uneasy calm in Puttaparthy

Anantapur, April 04: Anxiety was writ large on the faces of every one in the pilgrim town of Puttaparthy on Sunday. People were seen gathering in small groups at all places, discussing in low voices, the health of Satya Sai Baba, the spiritual guru for millions, who was admitted to hospital on March 28, after he fell ill.

The shops which normally teem with visitors, including those from abroad, wore a deserted look, while an uneasy calm was perceptible all over the town, with none providing accurate information on the condition of Satya Sai Baba.

Nagam threatens to move SC

Hyderabad, April 04: Senior Telangana Telugu Desam leader Nagam Janardhan Reddy yesterday threatened to move the Supreme Court if the Centre failed to cancel the appointment of Justice BN Srikrishna as chairman of Financial Sector Legislative Reforms Commission constituted by the ministry of finance.

Talking to newsmen at the TDLP office here, Janardhan Reddy, along with MLA K Jaipal Yadav, said people of the region believed that Justice Srikrishna was rewarded for submitting the ‘most biased, prejudiced, unprofessional and inappropriate’ report on Telangana.

Satya Saibaba breathing more easily now: Doctors

Anantapur, April 04: Sri Satya Saibaba, who was admitted to hospital following chest and lung congestion on March 28, is breathing more easily now but continues to be on ventilator support, doctors treating him said on Sunday evening.

“Bhagwan Sri Satya Sai Baba, who has been in the hospital for the last five days, is responding to treatment given to him quite satisfactorily. He is still on assisted ventilation to help his respiratory system and is breathing more easily now,” a health bulletin issued by A N Safaya, Director of Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, said.

PCC chief seeks feedback on government schemes

Hyderabad, April 04: Pradesh Congress Committee president D Srinivas yesterday directed the district Congress committee presidents to undertake field visits and complete collection of feedback on implementation of schemes by covering two or three mandals by April 10.

He wanted them to send the report along with photographs to the PCC by April 13. “Loopholes or lapses, if any, in implementation of the schemes and programmes will be brought to the government’s notice for rectification,” he noted.

Release white paper on hike: Dattatreya

Hyderabad, April 04: Senior BJP leader and former Union minister Bandaru Dattatreya has demanded that chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy convene an allparty meeting and release a white paper on power tariff hike and power generation in the state.

Addressing a press conference at the state BJP headquarters here today, the BJP leader strongly resented the power tariff hike by describing it as an undemocratic decision of the Congress government.

Two thirds in Karimnagar district are literate

Karimnagar, April 04: Literacy rate in Karimnagar district has gone up to 64.87 per cent this year from 54.9 per cent in 2001, according to the census report released by Census Commission recently.

This makes the district stand 14th among the 23 districts in the state and sixth among districts in Telangana.

The 9.97 per cent rise in literacy rate in the last decade is due to the constant efforts of anganwadi centres, work site schools, adult education centres and other educational institutions, an educationist of Karimnagar town felt.

Tirupati, April 04: Tirumala has been decked up beautifully for the Telugu New year, which falls on Monday. The hill shrine and its premises have been tastefully decorated with 2.5 tonnes of flowers of various hues, including ixora, crysanthimum, lillies, roses etc. Festoons of mango leaves and banana trunks with leaves were pitched in the ‘pandals’ giving a festive touch to the temple premises.

Realtor, father threatened over land deal

‘RTE should cover people aged up to 18 years’

Hyderabad, April 04: Questioning including an age criteria (6-14 years) in the Right to Education (RTE) Act, Madabhushi Sridhar from Nalsar Law University said that the RTE Act should take into consideration the entire phase from pre-schooling to 18 years in order to nip the problem of inequality in the bud.

250 disabled workers to be asked to quit

Hyderabad, April 04: More than half of the disabled employees of the Andhra Pradesh Vikalangula Cooperative Corporation (APVCC) will be asked to quit their jobs soon, informed Anitha Rajendhar, commissioner for Welfare of Disabled and Senior Citizens.

Meanwhile, the employees complained that they have not been getting any allowances for the last three years and their increments according to the Pay Revision Commission and drought allowances were also pending since 2009.

AIDWA demands power tariff rollback

Hyderabad, April 04: Demanding the state government to immediately roll back the hike in power tariff, members of the All- India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) staged a protest dharna at the Sundaraiah Park yesterday.

Sathya Sai Baba’s condition critical, say doctors

Puttaparthi (Andhra Pradesh), April 04: Spiritual leader Sathya Sai Baba’s condition has turned critical, said doctors Monday.

“Sathya Sai Baba continues to be on ventilator support for helping his respiration and suction of the secretions from the lungs. He continues to be on CRRT (continuous renal replacement therapy) system to help the functioning of the kidneys,” said a statement issued by the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences.

Warangal first in India to give IDs to orphans

Warangal, April 04: For the first time in the country, the state government has issued identity cards to 90 orphans in Warangal district.

BC Welfare Minister Baswaraju Saraiah handed over the cards, issued by the revenue department, to orphans at a programme held at Bala Vikasa Bhavan in Kazipet today.

Speaking on the occasion, the minister said that the method of issuing ID cards to orphans was not there in the country. It is being done for the first time in our state, he informed.
