Steep petrol price hike anger denizens

Hyderabad, may 16: Breaking the back of common people for the seventh time in 11 months, the Central government has declared another hike in price of petrol- and this time, by a whopping Rs 5 per litre!

Most people are definitely upset about this sudden increase and there were long queues before petrol pumps to petrol before the price hike came into effect. Abhishek Ponia, assistant manager at a sports and entertainment company, is definitely not happy.

TTD’s ban effort on plastic ineffective

Tirumala, May 16: Making the abode of Lord Venkateswara a plastic-free zone has remained an unfulfilled dream in Tirumala, though a decision to that effect was taken nearly a decade ago when I V Subba Rao was the executive officer of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD).

As recently as last month, the TTD’s Specified Authority was still debating how to switch to biodegradable bags instead of plastic bags for carrying the laddu prasadam.

Tension at hunger camp in tribal village

Chittor, May 16: The indefinite fast taken up by the residents of the tribal hamlet Parasathopu in Thamballapalli mandal has taken a dramatic turn.

One of the members of the tribe Venkataramana attempted suicide on Saturday by dousing himself in Kerosene and on Sunday, one, Ramanamma (35) fell ill as a result of the hunger strike which sparked tension.

The eighty-seven residents of the tribal hamlet have been on indefinite fast demanding funds for construction of new houses with regard to evacuation of the hamlet.

Two dead, five injured in accident

Hindpur, May 16: Two persons died and five others were injured when a speeding Innova hit a two-wheeler and also hit people waiting for bus on the footpath, at Kodiganahalli check post on Sunday.

According to police, Mallesh, driver of the car, lost control of the vehicle and hit a motorcycle leading to the death of one Sriramulu, who was riding the bike.

The impact of the speed was such that after hitting the bike, the car hit people standing by the roadside, resulting in the death of one, Chalapathi (50).

Sacked temple priest murders successor

Nellore, May 16: A priest was done to death by another priest in Tarunavai village in Sangam mandal late on Saturday night.

The accused Penchalaiah had developed a grudge against the victim Kapilaiah, who replaced him as the priest of the local temple.

According to police, V Penchalaiah who was the priest in Chennakesava Swamy temple in Tarunavai since the last few years, was removed from service, for not conducting his duties properly. The villagers recently appointed A Kapilaiah (45) as the new priest.

Sri Kurmam temple to get a facelift

Srikakulam, May 16: The Sri Kurmam temple here will soon get a facelift. The State Archaeology Department has come forward to extend its technical and financial support to modernise the temple and also preserve the ancient mural paintings here.

Some of the mural paintings inside the temple depicting several legends of Lord Krishna and Vishnu are in a dilapidated condition due to lack of scientific conservation and renovation methods.

Bids invited for ropeway to Bhavani islands

Vijayawada, May 16: The Vijayawada Guntur Tenali Mangalagiri Urban Development Authority (VGTM-UDA) has invited bids from individual firms and consortia for construction of a ropeway from Vijayawada to Bhavani Island and Undavalli caves to promote tourism in the region.

The UDA has decided to execute the prestigious project on Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis.

The successful bidder will have to design, execute and operate the ropeway project. After operating it for 30 years, the bidder will have to transfer the ropeway to VGTM-UDA.

Activist Ramulu’s last rites performed

Warangal, May 16: The last rites of Prof Burra Ramulu, a crusader of human rights who succumbed to cancer on Saturday, were performed at his native place in Fort Warangal on Sunday.

Leaders of various people’s organisations, students and faculty members took part in the funeral procession of Ramulu, state vice-president of the Human Rights Forum. HRF state president Jeevan Kumar lit the funeral pyre.

Telangana JAC convener Prof Kodandaram, TRS floor leader Etela Rajendar, Arunodaya Cultural Association president Vimalakka paid tributes to Ramulu and vowed to carry forward his fight.

Central staff seek seventh Pay Commission

Hyderabad, May 16: Stating that central government employees were not happy with the recommendations of the 6th pay commission, SK Vyas, president of the Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers (CCGEW), demanded constitution of 7th pay commission to resolve problems of employees. He was speaking at a state-level convention of CCGEW here on Sunday.

Protests over petrol price hike across state

Hyderabad, May 16: Several political parties in state registered their protest against the petrol price hike on Sunday with the leaders demanding that Congress-led UPA roll back the hike.

They burnt the UPA government in effigy at various places in the state.

CPM and CPI organised separate protest programmes along with other Left parties in city. The BJP city unit also organised a symbolic protest at Narayanguda cross roads.

CPM state secretary BV Raghavalu led the protest at RTC cross roads in which a large number of leaders and cadres from 10 Left parties took part.

22 firms respond for Krishna water scheme

Hyderabad, May 16: 22 consultants and firms have responded for preparation of a detailed project report (DPR) for the proposed Krishna Drinking Water Supply project Phase- III to supply 90 MGD water to the city.

The additional 90 MGD water is expected to bring a permanent solution to the looming water crisis in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits.

A grand wedding affair in gurudwara

Stockbroker found murdered

Hyderabad, May 17: A stock broker was on Sunday found murdered on the railway tracks near Budwel railway station.

Investigators suspect he was murdered due to illicit relations with a woman.

His body was noticed in the morning by hut dwellers near Budwel who informed the police.

With the help of a wallet containing driving licence, a SIM card and a photocopy of the SSC examination marks memo, police identified the victim as A Pratap (26) of Bandlaguda.

Pratap worked as a stock broker at Punjagutta. The SIM card was on Pratap’s mother’s name, police said.

Suspected Maoists kill Andhra firm’s executive

Hyderabad, May 16: Suspected Maoists Monday shot dead the deputy general manager of a firm in Andhra Pradesh’s Warangal district, police said.

Two to three assailants barged into the premises of AP Rayons’ paper unit in Kamalapuram village at around 4 p.m. Monday and opened fire on Deputy General Manager Ramakrishna, who died while being rushed to a nearby hospital.

Another senior executive, Sadanand, was injured.

According to the police, the assailants, who posed as truck drivers and entered the factory, escaped after the attack.

Jagan on 48-hour fast on farmers issues

Hyderabad, May 15:Two days after winning the Kadapa Lok Sabha seat in Andhra Pradesh with a record margin, YSR Congress party chief Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy Sunday began 48-hour hunger strike demanding the government solve the farmers’ problems.

A large number of farmers and supporters are participating in the hunger strike titled ‘rytu diksha’ of the young leader at Guntur.

The MP is demanding the government take all necessary steps to procure paddy from farmers and pay them the minimum support price (MSP).

Reddy brothers make lavish offering at Kalahasti

Tirupati, May 15: Karnataka’s mining barons, the Gali Reddy brothers on Saturday donated a diamond-studded crown worth an estimated Rs 12 crore to Gnana Prasoonambika Devi, the consort of Lord Srikalahasteeswara, the presiding deity of the Srikalahasti temple.

TDP reins are not hereditary: Babu

Vijayawda, May 15: There is no chance of hereditary control of the Telugu Desam, and party activists’ decision will be final in electing a leader, party supremo N Chandrababu Naidu has asserted.

Replying to a question whether there was a power struggle going on between the Nara and Nandamuri families for control over the party, Naidu said it would not be possible in the Telugu Desam.

DL to retain post, Viveka may be nominated

Hyderabad, May 15: Despite the drubbing he received in the by-election to the Assembly from Pulivendula, the Congress leadership is likely to nominate YS Vivekananda Reddy to the Legislative Council under governor’s quota.

Reddy lost to his sister-in-law YS Vijayalakshmi by a margin of 85,191 votes.

According to party sources, Vivekananda Reddy is in no mood to patch up and join hands with Jagan after the bitter electoral battle.

Ultimately, it will be for him to decide whether to continue in the Congress or not.

‘Let Jagan withdraw support to government’

Hyderabad, May 15: Telugu Desam leader Dadi Veerabhadra Rao on Saturday dared YSR Congress party chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy to approach the governor along with MLAs supporting him and give him a letter saying that they were withdrawing support to the Kiran Kumar Reddy government.

Rao told reporters that if Jagan had the support of the requisite support, he should straightaway go to the Raj Bhavan and give a letter withdrawing support to the government instead of accusing the TDP of supporting the Congress government.

Rights leader Ramulu dead

Warangal, May 15: A relentless crusader of human rights, one of the founders of Human Rights Forum and Kakatiya University Prof Burra Ramulu (58) died of illness here on Saturday.

He breathed his last in a private hospital this afternoon battling cancer for the last few months. When his condition deteriorated, he was admitted to a hospital in Hyderabad but later shifted to a private hospital here.

Ramulu, since his student days, worked as a Left extremist leader. Since 1990, Ramulu dedicated himself to leading civil rights movements.

‘TD, Congressmen should quit by June 1’

Hyderabad, May 15: Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC) has set June 1 deadline for the elected representatives of Congress and the TDP to quit their posts and join the T-movement.

If they fail to respond positively on the deadline, TJAC will intensify the Telangana movement across the region from June first week and would not allow the TDP and Congress leaders to tour in the region.
