Guntur ex-mayor barred from polls for 3 years

Guntur, May 27: The Election Commission has made a former mayor and 13 corporators of the previous municipal corporation, and 142 other contestants ineligible to contest any election for the next three years for failure to submit statements of expenditure incurred during their election campaign in the 2005 elections to the Guntur municipal corporation.

The election commission had issued orders to this effect four days ago.

Super speciality hospital in cold storage again

Vijaywada, May 27: The long-pending demand to establish a super speciality hospital (SSH) in Vijayawada has been put in the cold storage yet again. Minister for Health D.L. Ravindra Reddy told reporters that the first priority of the State Government was to improve the Government General Hospital (GGH) and it would think of developing an SSH later.

Funds were released by former Chief Minister N.T. Rama Rao for the Super Specialty Hospital on the Siddhartha Medical College campus after Government took over it.

‘Double murderer’ held

Hyderabad, May 26: An auto driver suspected to have killed two women in the forest area of Vanasthalipuram, was arrested by the police on Wednesday.

The accused, Munavath Ravi (26), hails from Damaracherla mandal of Nalgonda district. After his first wife deserted him, he married another woman and has three children. “Ravi was in debt and he committed offences for easy money,’’ Vanasthalipuram police inspector R Ravinder Reddy said.

Court orders FIR on APIIC officer

Hyderabad, May 26: Based on the direction given by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) court, the ACB officials on Tuesday registered an FIR against a Law Officer of Andhra Pradesh Industrial and Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) for allegedly committing various financial irregularities.

Andhra bags six of top 10 IIT-JEE ranks

Hyderabad, May 26: AP students did an encore at the IITJoint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) cornering a record number of ranks, including the top rank, in the exam this year. The state bagged six ranks among top 10 and nearly 40 ranks in the top 100.

I Prithvi Tej, a student from Hyderabad bagged the all-India top rank in the open category while V Shaimak Reddy secured third rank, Saikiran Burle (fourth rank), Kunal Chawla (sixth rank), T Bhargav Reddy (eighth rank) and J Varun (ninth rank).

DYFI calls for stir against TET

Hyderabad, May 26: The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) will conduct state level agitations from May 26 against the AP Teachers Eligibility Test (TET).

Their demand is not to conduct TETs for those who have already cleared Teacher Training Course and a Bachelor of Education professional course. The DYFI will conduct round table conferences with youth and teachers’ unions in every district for inputs in the agitations.

Relative killed my wife, says Niranjan

Hyderabad, May 26: IIM student Niranjan, who was held for killing his wife, Ananthalakshmi reportedly told the police that his wife was murdered by his relative Srikanth.

Police are on the look out for Srikanth, said to be a dismissed policemen.

Vanasthalipuram police, who are investigating the case, said that Niranjan confessed before them that Srikanth and his associates killed Ananthalakshmi and dumped her body in the Srisailam forests. Police said it was on Niranjan’s behest that the killing took place and he even assured to give the killers a handsome amount for the killing.

Police suspect role of two more in murder

Hyderabad, May 26: Cyberabad police suspect that Niranjan took the help of some others probably his friends, to kill his wife Ananthalakshmi. Meanwhile, in another twist to the murder case, Niranjan reportedly made a vain bid to escape from the custody of Vanasthalipuram police on Tuesday evening.

Niranjan was taken into custody for questioning into the case of his `missing’ wife, a 20-year-old degree student, Ananthalakshmi, on Monday and it was found that Niranjan took her to Srisailam and murdered her three days before their first marriage anniversary.

Minister lauds progress in rural electrification

Hyderabad, May 26: Union minister of state for power K C Venugopal has lauded AP power department officials for supplying electricity to rural households under the Restructured Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme (R-APDRP) and Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidhyuthikaran Yojana (RGGVY).

Reviewing the progress of R-APDRP and RGGVY schemes in the state here on Wednesday. he insisted on timely completion of R-APDRP meant for reducing transmission and distribution losses.

OUJAC attacks MLA’s house

Youth thrown out of running train by eunuchs

Vijayawada, May 26: A 25-year-old youth was severely injured when he was thrown out of a running train near Eluru by eunuchs (Hijras) recently, and his right hand and leg needed to be amputated to save his life.

Rs 2,600 crore needed for Rachabanda sops

Hyderabad, May 26: The state government requires at least Rs 2,600 crore additional amount to fulfill various promises made during Rachabanda programme it had undertaken in January this year.

Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy held a high-level meeting in the Secretariat here on Wednesday to review the Rachchabanda promises and the follow-up action on them.

He asked the officials to complete the verification of pending applications received during Rachabanda programme relating to ration cards, pensions and housing in a month’s time.

Two Jagan camp MLAs meet CM

Hyderabad, May 26: In a surprise development, two Congress MLAs, G Srikanth Reddy and A Amarnath Reddy loyal to YSR Congress party chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy along with Union minister of state Sai Pratap met chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy at the Secretariat here on Wednesday. They held closed door discussions with him for nearly an hour.

CBI visits Azad killing site

Hyderabad, May 26: The CBI officials who are investigating the ‘encounter’ killing of CPI (Maoist) spokesperson Cherukuri Rajkumar alias Azad and journalist Hemachandra Pandey in the Adilabad forests, on Tuesday enquired the Adilabad police about the circumstances of their death.

Led by CBI’s deputy inspector general V V Lakshminarayana, the team went to the encounter site in Narkepally forest area of Ramgiri mandal. The officials reportedly videographed the site.

Jagan intends to play Telangana card

Ministers shrug off Kiran’s pep talk

Hyderabad, May 26: Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Tuesday gave a pep talk to his Cabinet colleagues in a bid to refurbish the sagging image of his government.

His forceful arguments on the need to present a united face, however, seemed to have fallen on deaf ears. Bench refuses to admit plea against Jagan

Hyderabad, May 26: The vacation bench of the AP High Court comprising justice Ramesh Ranganathan and justice Nooty Ram Mohan Rao on Tuesday refused to take on file the writ petition seeking a direction to restrain YS Jagan and his mother YS Vijyalakshmi from being sworn to the public office they were elected recently.

The bench said that the matter can be examined when the court reopens after the summer recess. The bench was dealing with a writ petition filed by P. Satyanarayana, a practising advocate from the city.
