‘3,500 women benefit from Himachal’s Janani Express’

More than 3,500 mothers and their newborns in Himahcal have benefitted in two months under the Janani Express-102 scheme, the state government said Friday.

The scheme, launched Nov 15, 2014, offers free drop-back facility to promote institutional deliveries and for reducing the infant mortality and maternal mortality rate.

The scheme, which can be availed by dialling 102, has resulted in a phenomenal increase in the rate of institutional deliveries with over 80 percent deliveries being done in health institutions, an official statement said.

Bisexual British women report worse mental health than lesbians

Bisexual women in Britain are less likely to be in a relationship and more likely to experience poor mental health and mental distress than lesbians, new research has found.

According to the results, bisexual women were 64 percent more likely to report an eating problem and 37 percent more likely to have deliberately self-harmed than lesbians.

They were also 26 percent more likely to have felt depressed and 20 percent more likely to have suffered from anxiety in the previous year than lesbians.

Actress Cate Blanchett, 45, says she swears by the power of Emu oil for keeping her skin in check.

“I tend to use really basic creams, and I like to put an oil on, like an emu oil from Australia. It’s from the Emu (bird) and it’s really nourishing. I prefer an oil to a cream,” dailymail.co.uk quoted her as saying.

“In indigenous Australian culture, that’s the first oil they put on a baby because it’s so hydrating. It’s all pretty basic,” she added.

The product is made from oil taken from the fatty tissue on an Emu’s back.

Workers turning 50 considered as burden by bosses

A new survey has revealed that workers are considered “old” by their bosses from the day they turn 50.

The 50th birthday has become an “invisible tipping point” after which employees face discrimination and are seen as a burden, not an asset, the Daily Express reported.

Company chiefs fear they will end up with an office full of older people because many workers are carrying on past traditional retirement ages.

A survey of boardroom directors by business consultants KPMG found 75 percent are worried about managing a workforce whose ages range from teens to people in their late 60s.

Slackening the restrictive household rules against alcohol use that many parents tend to do may help advance the onset of alcohol use among their children, the findings showed.

“Parent’s attitude affects a kid’s attitude, and subsequently drinking in general,” said psychologist Craig Colder from University at Buffalo, New York.

Birth control Injections moderately raise risk of HIV infection

Scientists have claimed that a using a certain type of injectable birth control could fairly increase the risk of becoming infected with HIV. A large meta-analysis of 12 studies in sub-Saharan Africa found that women who used the contraceptive, depot medroxyprogesterone acetate, which is sold under the brand name Depo-Provera, had a moderately increased risk of becoming infected with HIV. The findings included data from 39,500 women. The researchers selected the studies based upon methodological rigor, such as whether they accounted for the use of condoms.

Renowned academician, feminist and former chairperson of West Bengal Commission for Women Jasodhara Bagchi died at a city hospital Friday following old age ailments, family sources said. She was 77.

She is survived by her husband and two daughters

How infants judge adults’ language proficiency

Monolingual infants expect others to understand only one language, an assumption not held by bilingual infants, a study by researchers at New York University and McGill University has found.

“Our results not only offer insight into infants’ perception of linguistic abilities but may also help us better understand whom they see as good communication partners,” explained Athena Vouloumanos, associate professor in NYU’s department of psychology.

Weight-loss surgery fuels job discrimination

Obese people who undergo weight-reducing bariatric surgery are less likely to be hired than those who have lost weight through exercise and dieting, new research has found.

This might be because obese people are often regarded as lazy and undisciplined, and because of the long-held belief that body weight can largely be controlled through diet and exercise, the researchers noted.

The findings suggest that stigma associated with obesity continues even after people lose weight.

Women perceived incompetent because of gender: Study

A study on men’s attitude towards women has brought to the fore the deep-rooted gender bias against the fair sex and hurdles the women face as members of the local self government bodies in Maharashtra.

The study paper presented by the students of Applied Psychology of Mumbai University (MU) during a sectional programme on “anthropological and behavioural sciences”, at the 102nd India Science Congress on Wednesday stated that men perceive women as “incompetent” because of their gender.

According to a study of more than 2,000 elementary and middle-school students, having a smartphone or tablet in the bedroom was associated with less weekday sleep and feeling sleepy in the daytime.

“‘Beti Ki Lohri’ would be celebrated on Jan 14 at Dronacharya stadium in Kurukshetra as the district administration has decided to celebrate the birth of daughters with about 50 such families who are blessed with a second girl child. Women more nutritionally knowledgeable than men

Women are, in general, more nutritionally knowledgeable and engage in healthier food shopping strategies than men, says a new research.

According to researchers from the University of Montreal in Canada, men’s eating habits are associated with the availability of healthy food sources in their residential neighbourhood but women’s are not.

“We found that for men only, intake of fruit and vegetables was positively associated with the proportion of healthy food outlets around home”, said lead researcher Christelle M. Clary.

Holding breath beneficial for breast cancer patients

New research shows that a breast cancer patient who holds her breath during radiation treatment can greatly reduce exposure to the heart.

Recent studies have shown that women with cancer in the left breast are at higher risk of heart disease. Such women present a particular challenge to radiation oncologists because it can be difficult to ensure that a sufficient dose of radiation is delivered to while adequately shielding the heart from exposure.

Women crave cigarette more strongly during periods

Women who can overcome the urge to smoke during their periods may find it easier to quit during rest of the month as nicotine cravings go up significantly after menstruation, new research shows.

“Our data reveal that incontrollable urges to smoke are stronger at the beginning of the follicular phase that begins after menstruation,” said Adrianna Mendrek from University of Montreal in Canada.

The findings could lead to gender-specific treatment to help people quit smoking.

“Taking the menstrual cycle into consideration could help women to stop smoking,” Mendrek explained.

Is depression a form of ‘sickness behavior’?

A new study has demonstrated that depression is a result of inflammation caused by the body’s immune system.

George Slavich, a clinical psychologist at the University of California in Los Angeles, said that depression does involve psychology, but it also involves equal parts of biology and physical health, the Guardian reported.

According to the study, a family of proteins called cytokines sets off inflammation in the body, and switches the brain into sickness mode.
