‘Salon-goers spend maximum in January’

Women like to pamper their skin and hair at a salon mostly during beginning of a year, according to data collected by Lakme Salon.

The data, collected via the customer database of 800,000 women across the country, highlighted some trends and facts amongst salon-goers.

On the basis of the information gathered by the salon, it is observed that July is the lowest spending month.

Finding a way to reduce your boredom or frustration can help you push aside hair-pulling and other body-focused repetitive behaviour, new research says.

Individuals who get easily bored, frustrated or impatient are more inclined to develop body-focused repetitive behaviors, the findings showed.

“Chronic hair-pulling, skin-picking disorder and nail-biting and various other habits are known as body-focused repetitive behaviours,” said principal investigator Kieron O’Connor from University of Montreal.

Relatives with prostate cancer ups breast cancer risk in women

Having a family history of prostate and breast cancer among first-degree relatives may increase a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer, claims a study.

“The increase in breast cancer risk associated with having a positive family history of prostate cancer is modest.”

“However, women with a family history of both breast and prostate cancer among first-degree relatives have an almost two-fold increase in risk of breast cancer,” said Jennifer L. Beebe-Dimmer of the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in the US.

Children who are told they are special by their parents are more likely to become narcissists, according to a study that aimed to uncover the origins of extreme selfishness.

The research in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a peer-reviewed US journal, is based on 565 children in the Netherlands who were surveyed over the course of a year and a half, along with their parents.

Family history of prostate cancer increases risk of breast cancer in women

A new study has found that the risk of breast cancer increases in the woman who have a family history of prostate cancer among first-degree relatives.

The study conducted by Wayne State University explained that risk of developing breast and prostate cancer was increased among individuals with a family history of the same disease, particularly among first-degree relatives, so doctors should analyze the family history before treating.

Indian women blame patriarchy, submissiveness for their fate: Survey

In a survey of 1,892 women from various Indian cities, over 60 percent of the respondents said that it is a combination of patriarchy, men and the submissiveness of women, that had led to their fate and “lack of voice” in the country.

The results of the survey, ‘Is it an unequal world?’, conducted by two active online communities — WE (Women Endangered) and I Am Who I Am, were released a day ahead of International Women’s Day, via a statement.

Treat women equal to men, says Shabana Azmi

On the occasion of International Women’s Day on Sunday, veteran actress-social activist Shabana Azmi says rather than treating women like goddesses, the society should treat them as equals.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day on Sunday, budget carrier SpiceJet said it was operating 16 all-women crew flights across India and on its international routes.

“The first such all-women crew Bombardier Q400 flight, SG 1, took-off from Chennai at 0040 hours bound for Colombo, under the command of Captain Aarti Pushpala, cabin crew-in-charge Sheeba Singh, and their all-woman crew,” the airlines announced in a release here.

Restore budget for women and child developmednt: Maneka Gandhi

Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi on Sunday urged Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to restore part of the budgetary allocations slashed in the union budget for certain schemes.

At an interaction with women journalists at the Indian Women’s Press Corps here, the minister, however, said there has been no cut in budgetary allocations for her ministry as such.

“It is not a cut in the budget but just a reappropriation. A large part has gone to the states as per the recommendations of the finance commission,” she said replying to a question.

UST Global launches app on women’s safety

UST Global – the biggest employer of IT professionals in Kerala – Friday launched its mobile-based app for women’s safety, ahead of the International Women’s Day on March 8.

The app was unveiled by Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala here in the presence of high ranking police officers.

To start with, the app – iSafe – has been rolled out for Thiruvananthapuram City Police and would soon be made available in other cities.

The app is currently available for Android phones and will soon be available on other platforms.

Women still earn much less than men in EU: Eurostat

Official data show that women in the European Union member states earned on average 16.4 percent less than men in 2013.

The figure, which was released by the EU’s Statistics Office (Eurostat) on Thursday, revealed the pay gap is even greater in many northern countries of the bloc.

The largest salary gap was in Estonia at 29.9 percent, followed by Austria at 23 percent, the Czech Republic at 22.1 percent and Germany at 21.6 percent.

Meanwhile, the revenue gap in Britain stood at 19.7 percent, France at 15.2 percent and Ireland at 14.4 percent.

UN calls for gender equality ahead of International Women’s Day

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein on Thursday appealed to women worldwide “to participate in all discussions of strategic responses to violence, discrimination, and deprivation of all kinds”.

“This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Programme of Action. States can seize this opportunity to go beyond lip-service and towards gender equality, genuinely challenging and dismantling the power structures and dynamics which perpetuate discrimination against women,” Xinhua quoted Hussein as saying.

Diet with friend to lose weight: Survey

A new study has revealed that you are more likely to shed those extra pounds if you diet with a friend compared to doing it solo.

The survey was conducted on behalf of Seasonal Berries and found that a whopping 89 percent of 1750 men and women surveyed had lost weight when they took up the challenge with someone else, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

Those who had chosen to diet using the buddy system had lost on average eight pounds in weight, compared to just six pounds for those who had tried to diet alone.

World’s oldest person wonders about secret to longevity too

Misao Okawa, the world’s oldest person, as recognised by Guinness World Records, says 117 years doesn’t seem like such a long time.

Asked for the secret of her longevity, she responded nonchalantly, “I wonder about that too.”

Indian maternal health far worse than previously thought

As per a new study, maternal health in India much worse than previously thought as more than 40 percent of women are underweight when they begin pregnancy.
