Higher vitamin D levels in pregnancy may result in stronger babies

Researchers have suggested that babies are likely to have stronger muscles if their mothers had a higher level of vitamin D in their body while they are pregnant.

In the research vitamin D levels were measured in 678 mothers in the later stages of pregnancy.

When the children were four years old, grip strength and muscle mass were measured. Results showed that the higher the levels of vitamin D in the mother, the higher the grip strength of the child, with an additional, but less pronounced association between mother’s vitamin D and child’s muscle mass.

Fear of childbirth triples risk of postpartum depression

Pregnant women who fear childbirth are at an increased risk of postpartum depression, it has been revealed.

According to a study of over 500,000 mothers in Finland, fear of childbirth during pregnancy was discovered to nearly triple the risk of postpartum depression.

This new observation may help health care professionals in recognizing postpartum depression, which can have severe consequences for the mother, as well as the child and may impair the development of an attachment relationship.

Other risk factors included Caesarean section, pre-term birth and major congenital anomaly.

Acupuncture proved ineffective in treating breast cancer

A new study has found that acupuncture is ineffective in treating hot flashes, joint pain, and other menopausal symptoms.

Forty-seven female breast cancer patients were treated with eight weeks of either real or fake acupuncture as a way to reduce the side effects of an anti-cancer medication.

Twenty-three patients were given real acupuncture (placing needles on carefully-selected points on the body), and 24 were given sham acupuncture, where needles were placed (but not actually inserted into) the skin at random locations.

Inflated praise can harm kids with low self-esteem

A new study has found that parents and other adults heap the highest praise on children with low self-esteem, but while kids with high self-esteem seem to thrive with inflated praise, their counterparts actually shrink from new challenges when adults go overboard on praising them.

The research by Eddie Brummelman from The Ohio State University is the first research to empirically examine the impact of inflated praise.

Skin blisters may lead to stroke in young

Having shingles – painful, blistering skin rashes – may increase the risk of having a stroke years later.

“Anyone with shingles, and especially younger people, should be screened for stroke risk factors. Studies are needed to determine whether vaccination can also reduce the incidence of stroke and heart attack,” said study author Judith Breuer of University College London.

People aged 18 to 40 who had shingles were more likely to have a stroke, heart attack or transient ischemic attack (TIA) – warning for a stroke – years later than people who had not had shingles.

Scientists at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for the first time found significant differences in the mechanisms that cause high blood pressure in women as compared to men.

2013 – an eventful year for women in Meghalaya

Woman with 36 letter surname finally gets driving licence!

A woman from Hawaii, who was having trouble getting a driving licence because her 36-letter surname exceeded the word limit, has finally received it with her full name.

Janice Keihanaikukauakahihuliheekahaunaele got her licence after a campaign in her honour was highly supported, which forced the concerned officials to change their policy regarding the number of letters allowed on the licence, the Daily Star reported.

Where only 35 characters were allowed on the licence, now 40 characters can be permitted for surnames. (ANI)

More than half of women face discrimination at work place

A new survey has revealed that more than half of the female employees feel discriminated at work.

The poll was conducted by Opportunity Now which surveyed 25,000 women and aims to get to 100,000 before publishing its final results, the Independent reported.

It was found that almost a fifth of the women surveyed so far said that their careers have stalled because managers failed to promote them or offer training opportunities.

Younger women, who lead more varied and exciting lives than their moms, still consider having a baby a priority, according to a study.

The study of 1,000 women in the age group of 25 to 40 found that the largest proportion (68 per cent) said having a baby was their greatest priority in lives, the Daily Express reported.

The research by skin care firm Olay Total Effects also found that this was followed by getting married (54 per cent) and buying a house (51 per cent).

A women from Chicago, US, has claimed to have one the world’s biggest butts which are 2.1 metres wide.

Bootylicious Sarah Massey said that she had turned her life around by regaining her confidence after posting pictures of her bottom online and getting plenty of positive feedback from ‘fans’, News.com.au reported.

The 33-year-old, who doesn’t hold any official record, wears size 10XL trousers and believes her bottom is the biggest in the world.
