Heart attack ups depression risk in women

Women are at a higher risk of developing anxiety and depression after a heart attack than men, new research shows.

In a study involving 160 patients from Vilnius University Hospital Santariskiu Clinics in Lithuania, researchers investigated the impact of gender and cardio-vascular disease risk factors on the risk of developing depression and anxiety after an heart attack.

They found that nearly one quarter of patients (24.4 percent) were depressed and of those, 28.2 percent had received treatment with anti-depressants.

For first time 13 women set to enter Haryana Assembly

For the first time in Haryana, known for its skewed sex ratio, 13 women will enter the state Assembly out of 116 women candidates who contested the polls.

BJP, which got the majority, has given the maximum eight women candidates to the 90-member Haryana Assembly.

Congress has three women candidates declared as winners while INLD and HJC have one each.

Among the sitting women MLAs who were re-elected include Congress ministers Geeta Bhukkal and Kiran Choudhary, Renuka Bishnoi (HJC-BL), Shakuntla Khatak (Cong) and Kavita Jain (BJP).

Japanese firm eyes algae-based shampoo

Japanese household goods maker Kao Corp. may soon be using algae to produce cleansing agents for its products, specifically shampoo, media reported Sunday.

Kao found two types of algae among 1,200 or so species in its research into more sustainable raw materials for its products, Xinhua reported citing a report in the Asahi Shimbun newspaper.

The algae in question contains medium-chain fatty acids that are similar in structure to those of palm kernel oil, which is used as a raw material for surfactants, the main component in shampoo.

Mums beat dads at being ‘top chefs’ in family

A new survey has demonstrated that mothers are the top cooks in family as they have a greater grip on what their children are eating.

The survey that approached 2,000 children aged 5 to 12 showed that two out of three children left more of their fathers’ meals, the Daily Express reported.

Fathers were praised for letting children eat what they want and giving bigger portions.

According to the survey, fathers prepared just three family meals while mothers cook seven.

Smoking during pregnancy alters newborn’s DNA

Babies born to mothers who smoke during pregnancy may find it difficult to cope with stressors of daily life later due to an alteration in DNA of a gene that regulates passage of stress hormones from mother to foetus, a study says.

Newborns of such mothers show lower levels of stress hormones and lowered stress response, the findings showed.

“Our results suggest that these newborns may not be mounting adequate hormonal response to daily stressors,” said lead researcher Laura Stroud from The Miriam Hospital in Rhode Island.

Females sex hormone key to warding off lung infections

Females have been known to be naturally more resistant to respiratory infections than males. Now, scientists have shown that the increased resistance to bacterial pneumonia in female mice is linked to an enzyme that is activated by the release of the female sex hormone oestrogen.

For this, the team from Harvard University’s School of Public Health introduced Streptococcus pneumoniae into the lungs of mice to mimic the inhalation of bacteria that occurs naturally as we breathe.

Women who worry, cope poorly with stress and experience mood swings in middle age run a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease later in life, it showed.

“Some studies have shown that long periods of stress can increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and our main hypothesis is that it is the stress itself that is harmful,” said Lena Johansson, scientist at the University of Gothenburg’ Sahlgrenska Academy in Sweden.

According to a Danish study, over 40 percent of women had consumed more than five units of alcohol before they were sexually assaulted by a stranger or someone they met within 24 hours prior to the assault.

It found that 66 percent of the women were aged 15-24 years old and 75 percent had met the perpetrator before the sexual assault.

Anti-depressants during pregnancy up obesity, diabetes risk in infants

Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to depression, but women who take anti-depressants during pregnancy may be predisposing their infants to Type 2 diabetes and obesity later in life, says a study.

Maternal use of a class of anti-depressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs increase risk of obesity and diabetes in children, the findings showed.

Obesity and Type 2 diabetes in children is on the rise and there is the argument that it is related to lifestyle and availability of high calorie foods and reduced physical activity.
