Researchers from McGill University in Canada conducted a simple experiment involving 372 children between the ages of 4 and 8.

The researchers, led by Professor Victoria Talwar of McGill’s Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, left each child alone in a room for a minute with a toy behind them on a table, having told the child not to peek during their absence.

While they were out of the room, a hidden video camera filmed what went on.

Smoking hampers alcohol abuse treatment

Smoking can inhibit the success of treatment for alcohol abuse, says a study, adding that it puts people who are addicted to both tobacco and alcohol in a double bind.

According to findings by the University of Buffalo’ Research Institute on Addictions (RIA) in the US, people who smoke have shorter stays in alcohol treatment programmes than non-smokers and may have poorer treatment outcomes than non-smokers.

The study analysed more than 21,000 adult treatment seekers from 253 community outpatient substance abuse clinics across New York State.

Safety App for women passengers on trains soon

Amid growing oncern over crime incidents involving women travellers, Railways is planning to launch an app for the safety of lady passengers in trains.

The Safety App, which is being developed by CRIS, the technolgy arm of Railways, will have to be downloaded on mobile phones and can be used to send distress messages to RPF and GRP with the single press of a button, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said today.

Daily aspirin’s benefits for women over 65 outweigh risks

A new research has revealed that daily dose of aspirin protects women over 65 against the cancer despite the dangers of internal bleeding.

The study at the University Medical Centre in the Netherlands also suggests that since younger women appear to gain no benefit, the regular use aspirin may be harmful for them, the Daily Express reported.

Although the possibility of developing serious illnesses, particularly cancer, and the risk of stomach bleeding rises with age, so too does the drug’s impact on lowering the risk of bowel cancer and heart disease.

National consultation on violence against women in January

A national consultation will be held between civil society organisations and government officials in January on protection of women from violence, organisers said Saturday.
