Communal Violence: Who is to be blamed?

A friend with dogged determination to show that the BJP is a lesser culprit of communal violence and that Congress is the major party to be blamed, listed the major communal riots in India and showed that most of the time when violence took place, it was Congress which has been the ruling party. He asks, so why get stuck with one episode of Gujarat violence and put it as a major point against Narendra Modi or BJP for that matter?

Ramadan Reflections on Islam and World Hunger

Let us also reflect more deeply on the true meaning of Ramadan; that time when we are are reminded that all Muslims are enjoined by our Creator to abstain from all eating and drinking during daylight hours. This month of fasting and spiritual reflection brings us closer to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala and more attuned to the needs and suffering of other human beings.

Indeed, we experience the temporary discomfort of hunger and thirst each day, but the magnitude of chronic hunger in our world is truly staggering.

Consider, if you will, the following disturbing statistics:

Telangana impact: Housing prices to rise in Hyderabad

After remaining stagnant since 2009, housing prices in Hyderabad are set to rise as the market sentiment is likely to improve following Congress party’s decision to create Telangana state out of Andhra Pradesh, rating agency Crisil said today.

After a four-year hiatus, residential real estate prices are set to rise at a relatively faster pace in Hyderabad with the likely resolution of the Telangana issue (the announcement of the creation of a separate Telangana state and giving the city a special status for 10 years),” Crisil said in a statement.

Andhra Pradesh – End of an era

Andhra Pradesh, in the shape it existed for nearly 57 years, will now be cast into history with the centre Tuesday deciding to carve out Telangana state.

The state came into being on Nov 1, 1956, with the merger of Hyderabad State, as Telangana was then known, with Andhra State, which was the first Indian state to be formed on linguistic basis.

Telangana, a part of erstwhile princely state of Hyderabad, is inhabited by Telugu-speaking people.

Things you should never say to someone over 50

There are certain phrases or words that one might have said kindly to someone over 50, but some things are better left unsaid.

For instance, a seemingly naive enough remark – “Hey, you look tired!” — can be a startling and at times obnoxious reminder of one’s age.

Now, Huffington Post has compiled a list of things, with the help of their Facebook followers, that you should avoid saying to someone over 50.

One user, Cheryl De Primio posted on the social networking site that she got furious recently when a waitress condescendingly called her ‘young lady’.

Hindu Nationalism versus Indian Nationalism

The debate around Hindu Nationalism and Indian Nationalism is not a new one. During colonial period, when the rising freedom movement was articulating the concept and values of Indian nationalism, the section of Hindus, keeping aloof from freedom movement asserted the concept of Hindu Nationalism. The debate has resurfaced again due to the one who is trying to project himself as the Prime-Ministerial candidate of BJP-NDA, Narendra Modi. In an interview recently (July 2013) said very ‘simply’ that he was born a Hindu, he is a nationalist, so he is a Hindu Nationalist!

Lack of exercise makes Indian bones weaker

Indian bones are conventionally weaker, deformed and more osteoporosis-prone compared to Americans or Britons, say leading knee replacement surgeons who participated in a knowledge-sharing exercise here on replacement surgeries.

The exercise also threw up insights about how Africa could also emerge as a major resource pool for tapping patients in India’s quest for medical tourism.

India’s Economy- Is it sick or have serious symptoms appeared?

In a globalised world, currency volatility should not be a worrying factor? India’s economy made a remarkable recovery in the nineties in the face of almost going bust when the country was forced to mortgage part of its gold reserves. Massive economic scams, some terrible amendments to the Income Tax Act and FEMA in the last eight years seem to have brought on a fresh specter of crisis -either the economy is facing serious illness or has symptoms of one. The current volatility of the rupee is first sign of the impending crisis if one is prepared to face it.

Dance bars were the zing in Mumbai’s night life

The dance bars were once considered the jewel in the crown of Mumbai’s non-stop night life — until they were banned and shut down in August 2005.

Unique to the maximum city which never slept, dance bars had scores of young girls or women dancing away to blaring Bollywood numbers with colourful lights, a hazy airconditioned atmosphere reeking of the smell of cigarette smoke and liquor, plus food.

The patrons, mostly youth or wealthy businessmen, tourists both domestic and international, enjoyed an “interactive” session with the dancers by showering them with currency notes.

Bodh Gaya Blasts: Terrorist Violence And Political Agenda

Since last two decades terrorist violence has been added on to the weapons for polarizing communities along religious lines. In Mumbai for example, we first witnessed the major blasts in the wake of 92-93 post demolition violence, then blasts in the aftermath of Gujarat carnage of 2002 and then 26/11 2008 attack from Kasab and company. This shows the multifaceted nature, many causative factors, of terrorist violence. In the similar vein, the country as a whole witnessed regular repeated violence with loss of lots of lives.

Madinah has best Islamic urban planning

Millions of Muslims visit the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah every year, but very few know that Madinah Munawwarah, the City of Light, is not only the first settlement in Islam, but also a shining example of urban planning based on principles outlined in the Qur’an.

“The city of Madinah as built by the Prophet, peace be upon him, is a very good example of urban planning. The ultimate purpose of life, of worshipping God, provided guidance for the planning of Madinah (in the first year of the Hijra or 623 CE),” said Dr. Hisham Mortada, an architect and environmental expert.

THIS RAMADAN – PAUSE! LOOK AROUND!! REFLECT!!!

Ramadan is here again providing us the opportunity to reach out to Allah more than ever and ask for His forgiveness and blessings. As Allah has singled out this month more so than others for showering His blessings and mercy, it is only prudent that we also use the opportunity to reassess our conditions, our purpose and direction in life, and accordingly make appropriate changes in line with His commands.

Media helping to vilify Ishrat?

A carefully crafted conspiracy of abduction, torture, pre-meditated murder and calumny is rapidly unravelling. At the centre of the maelstrom are the highest police officers of Gujarat, DIG Crime Branch, DG Vanzara and the Additional Director General of Police, PP Pandey. The dubious role of a senior official of the Intelligence Bureau, Rajinder Kumar, in the cold-blooded murders of four “suspected” terrorists, including 19-year-old Ishrat Jahan in 2004 is becoming increasing clear. No less implicated are Chief Minister Narendra Modi and his then Home Minister Amit Shah.
