The recent killing of two people, including a teenager, by soldiers of the Indian Army has renewed calls for the revocation of the law that gives special powers to the armed forces in the insurgency-hit Jammu and Kashmir.

The man on the street views the incident, for which the army has issued an unusual apology, as a manifestation of the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) that gives sweeping powers to the armed forces in the state that is inching towards peace after decades of Pakistan-sponsored proxy war.

Child mortality gap narrows in developing world: study

The child-mortality gap has narrowed between the poorest and wealthiest households in a majority of more than 50 developing countries, a new Stanford study has found.

This convergence was mostly driven by the fact that child-mortality rates declined the fastest among the poorest families.

In the countries where the gap increased, the study identified a common thread: poor governance.

‘Gold may decline to Rs 24,500 by Dec if rupee stays constant’

Gold prices are likely to decline further to around Rs 24,500 per 10 grams by December if the rupee continues to rule at the current level, according to analysts.

“We expect the gold prices to remain bearish and if the rupee continue to rule at current level the yellow metal may touch Rs 24,500 level by December. We expect gold to consolidate in a week or two, then continue to decline further from mid or end of December,” Motilal Oswal Associate Vice President – Commodities – Kishore Narne told PTI here.

India’s gender gap rank worse than last year

India has performed poorly in removing gender-based disparities, ranking 114 out of 142 countries in World Economic Forum’s 2014 gender gap index, scoring below average on parameters like economic participation, educational attainment and health and survival.

India slipped 13 spots from its last year’s ranking of 101 on the Gender Gap Index by the World Economic Forum. India is part of the 20 worst-performing countries on the labour force participation, estimated earned income, literacy rate and sex ratio at birth indicators.

NDA resiling from UPA stand on blackmoney: Jethmalani to SC

Ram Jethmalani, who raked up the black money issue in the Supreme Court, today accused the Narendra Modi government of “resiling and even going back” on the stand taken by UPA regime for disclosing all information and documents supplied by Germany on unaccounted money parked by Indians in Liechtenstein Bank.

Britain ends 13-year war in Afghanistan

The UK today handed over its last base in Afghanistan to the Afghan forces, marking an official end to the 13-year-long combat operations that claimed over 450 British lives in the war-torn country.

House gutted by fire, Holy Quran safe

A house was completely gutted by fire resulting from short circuit at Janki Nagar Colony Tolichowki. All the items of the house were reduced to ashes; the fridge burnt and got shrunk, the LED set got melted, the sofa set reduced to ashes and the complete house wiring got burnt. The fire resulting from the short circuit gutted the whole house. The walls remained as hot as the furnace for hours but the 6 to 7 copies of the Holy Quran kept in the shelf in a corner of the house remained untouched by the fire; even though the fire melted the electric wire close to the copies of the Quran.
