No personal law: Muslims can’t marry off minor girls, says HC

Justice C T Selvam had disallowed marriage of a Minor Muslim girl, saying, “This court cannot, and would not, pass an order by virtue of which little girls become child brides. When there is a legislative ban on child marriages, the courts cannot go out of their way to help the promoters of child marriages.”

In what appears to be the first rape case the city police of Bengaluru have encountered wherein two burqa-clad men raped a 21-year-old woman the last week.

The culprits involved in the heinous crime wore a burqa to conceal their identity.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sadhvi Prachi stirred another controversy with her statement that Hindus should boycott movies by Khan actors in Bollywood as they promote ‘Love Jihad’.

All 6 accused acquitted: Gujarat 2002 riots:

Citing lack of evidence,a special trial court here today acquitted all the six accused in a case related to the killing of three British nationals during the 2002 post-Godhra riots.

The deaths of the British nationals near Prantij town in Sabarkantha district had prompted the UK government to take a policy decision not to have active engagement with Gujarat government. UK resumed the engagement only in October 2012.

Representatives of the British High Commission to India were present in the court today.

Guj riots: verdict in UK nationals’ killing case on Feb 27

A special trial court is likely to pronounce verdict this week in the case related to killing of three British nationals at Prantij town in Himmatnagar district during the 2002 post-Godhra riots in Gujarat.

Principal district judge I C Shah of Himmatnagar court is likely to deliver the verdict on February 27, prosecution sources said.

Govt reports decline in recruitment of minorities to central forces

The representation of minority communities in recruitment to paramilitary forces registered a decline over a four-year period till 2011, the government told Parliament today.

According to statistics cited by Minister of State for Home Haribhai Parthibai Chaudhary in a written reply in Lok
Sabha, the overall representation of minorities in 2008 was 62.63 per cent in these forces but came down to 57.62 per cent in 2009.

Their proportion further went down to 52.55 per cent in 2010 and 29.18 per cent in 2011.

Constituted by the UP government and led by retired judge of the Allahabad High Court, Justice Vishnu Sahai, the commission is set up to probe the reasons behind the Muzaffarnagar riots which left 63 dead and thousands on the streets.
