436 mosques destroyed in Central African Republic: US ambassador to UN

Almost all of the 436 mosques in the Central African Republic (CAR) have been reduced to rubble, said Samantha Power, the US ambassador to the United Nations.

She called the destruction “kind of crazy, chilling,” after a Security Council visit last week to the country.

Samantha expressed concern about possible security vacuum in the near future as French forces and European Union (EU) pull out and a UN peacekeeping force is still not at full strength.

As a minimum, 5000 people have been killed since CAR exploded into unprecedented sectarian violence in December 2013.

Credit my daughter for quashing 66A: Shaheen Dhada’s father

Mohammed Farooq Dhada, father of Shaheen Dhada, whose Facebook post had created a nationwide stir in 2012, on Tuesday said the credit for the Supreme Court verdict striking down Section 66A of Information Technology Act, 2000, “must go to my daughter”.

A pleased Dhada said: “I never scolded her for (the post) and supported her always as she had done nothing wrong. We are happy by the verdict and all credit must go to my daughter.”

His son Shakil said he had spoken to his sister Shaheen who “has welcomed the SC ruling and is very happy about it”.

12 year old girl tries to kill mom on taking away her iPhone

A 12-year-old girl arrested by US police in Colorado who was trying to kill her mother twice by poisoning her drink with bleach after mother resisted her using the iPhone and took away the iPhone.

According to sources the mother drank the caustic fluid on one of the two attempts, which both happened within a week this month. On March 2, the girl poured bleach into a breakfast smoothie that she had prepared for her mother, said police.

While the mother noticed the smell of bleach from her glass, but the woman assumed that her daughter hadn’t rinsed it properly, according to police.

Sadhu attempts to rape blind woman in UP

A sadhu allegedly tried to rape a blind woman when she went to him to treat her blindness in Haldi area here, police said on Sunday.

The incident took place yesterday when the 22-year-old woman had gone to sadhu Dharmdev alias Birju Baba to cure her blindness, they said.

The sadhu then not only tried to rape her but also attacked her with a sharp-edged weapon, police said.

The accused was later arrested and the matter is being investigated, they said.

Teacher suspended for calling Muslim teen ‘a raghead Taliban’

A high school teacher has been suspended for five days without pay after she called her Muslim student “a raghead Taliban,” media sources reported.

The Broward School Board approved the suspension Tuesday against Maria Valdes, a French teacher at Cypress Bay High School in Weston. She must also attend mandatory diversity training.

Youssef Hassan Wardani, the father of the Muslim student, Deyab-Houssein Wardani, 14, said: “She called my son, on Feb. 2 as we walked into class, “Here comes the raghead Taliban.”

Youssef wanted the teacher to be fired or suspended for a year.

Once integral to Mughal culture, ‘mushairas’ or poetic symposiums have now been politicised and are being used to garner votes, says Sahitya Akademi Award winning Urdu poet Sayyad Munawwar Ali Rana.

“Mushairas are now politicised. Ministers have been organising mushairas in order to draw votes into their kitty. The shayaris are thus hardlined and the standard does not remain the same,” the poet said.

“People initially think I’m Christian and then gawk when I tell them my full name,” laughs Saarah Hameed Ahmed (25), the Bengaluru girl who became the first female commercial Muslim pilot in the Indian aviation sector.

“I just love the look on people’s faces when they discover I am Muslim,” said Saarah who has been flying commercial aircraft Spicejet airlines for over two years.

Sarah is the only Muslim woman to be chosen in the aviation sector out of 600 women already employed.
