In a bid to provide relief to Bollywood superstar Salman Khanfrom getting a “harsh” five-year jail term in the 2002 hit-and-run case,the Bombay High Court on Friday ruled that he does not have to go to jail till his appeal against the conviction has been decided.

Many eyebrows rose with the way Bombay HC ruled the justice for the Bollywood star- interim bail on Wednesday and regular bail within two days.

Several legal experts say such swiftness has no precedence, while few say the superstar had a political support.

22.2 million: Indians under trial exceed Dutch population

For the 13 years the Salman Khan’s hit-and-run case was in trial, it was one of 18.5 million criminal cases pending in India’s district and lower courts – and the 50-year-old Bollywood star was one of 22.2 million people under trial.

Driven by a shortage of prosecutors, judges and courts and — among other reasons — slow procedures, there are more people under trial in India than there are people in the Netherlands or Kazakhstan.

In 2013, the cases of as many as 85 percent of people put on trial were pending, according to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data.

The ‘human’ side of Salman Khan

Bollywood’s reigning superstar Salman Khan, who has been fighting the hit-and-run case in courts for over 12 years, is known for taking up humanitarian causes.

Troubled by the 2002 case, the actor slowly and gradually took to charity.

During this period (from 2002), Salman, son of noted script writer Salim Khan, turned to philanthropy by forming ‘Being Human’, a Non-Governmental Organisation.

The NGO, supported by Salman Khan Foundation, has adopted villages in Maharashtra and outside the state.

Legalising prostitution? Karnataka govt to form panel on sex workers

The Karnataka government will soon form a panel to look into problems faced by sex workers, Women and Child Welfare Minister Umashree said today.

“The government, in a day or two, will form a panel to study the plight of sex workers across Karnataka,” she told reporters here.

However, she declined to make any concrete statement on legalising prostitution in the state in the backdrop of some religious leaders and politicians, including former law minister M C Nanaiah favoring wider discussion on the matter.

A Budgam resident, who managed to get hall ticket for his Brown Cow to write a professional entrance examination, said he is determined to take the bovine to write the papers.

1,000 Europeans still missing in Nepal quake

At least 1,000 Europeans who came as tourists to Nepal prior to the April 25 devastating quake are still missing, European Union’s ambassador to the Himalayan nation Rensje Teerink said here on Friday.

Those unaccounted for were mostly trekkers in the Langtang and Lukla areas of the country, Teerink said.

Twelve Europeans have died in the devastating quake and subsequent avalanches in various parts of the country.

India may be next: Experts warn of Earthquake

In the wake of the strong 7.9 magnitude earthquake that killed over a 2,500 people in Nepal and left a swathe of devastation in the northern Himalayas on Saturday, experts said a temblor of equal intensity is “overdue” in northern India.”

“An earthquake of the same magnitude is overdue. That may happen either today or 50 years from now… in the region of the Kashmir, Himachal, Punjab and Uttrakhand Himalyas. Seismic gaps have been identified in these regions,” B.K. Rastogi, the director general of the Ahmedabad-based Institute of Seismological Research, told IANS on the phone.
