The GE Foundation Scholar-Leaders Program began in 1987 in Mexico and since then it has been a strong pillar which provides support to outstanding students in higher education in fourteen countries around the world among which India is also the one.

The GE Foundation Scholar-Leaders program is administered by the Institute of International Education on behalf of the GE Foundation.

Centre’s directive to states on pre-matric scholarships

Pre-matric scholarships to minority community students should also be paid through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to ensure disbursal without delay and transparency, Centre has told the states.

The post-matric and the merit-cum-means scholarships are already distributed through the DBT mode to the students’ bank accounts.

“I am now keen that the pre-matric scholarship scheme is also delivered to the beneficiaries through the DBT mode from this year,” Minority Affairs Minister Najma Heptulla said in her letter to the Chief Ministers.

India offers 180 scholarships to Sri Lankan students

The Indian High Commission has said in a statement that the Government of India has offered 180 scholarships for Sri Lankan candidates to follow undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. degrees at some of the leading universities in India.

These scholarships are available for study in all courses, except medicine, the high commission release said.

One hundred of the 180 scholarships are being offered under the Nehru Memorial Scholarship Scheme for all undergraduate courses, including engineering, science, business, economics, commerce, humanities and arts.

Merit-cum-Means scholarship for 2014-15

Prof. S A Shukoor Managing Director AP State Minorities Finance Corporation stated in a press note that Minority Affairs Ministry, Govt. of India has re-opened SMS portal from January 1 to 18, 2015 only for renewal of Merit-cum-Means based scholarship for courses selected under it and whose result was delayed. Courses selected for the same is as follows, Medical and Para medical courses, Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry and Law Pharmacy.

Govt has launched ‘Pragati Scholarship’ for girls: Smriti Irani

Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani has said that a “Pragati Scholarship” has been launched by the government from the year 2014-15 to provide encouragement and support to the girl child to pursue technical education.

Irani, who gave this information in a written reply to the Lok Sabha question, said the salient features of the “Pragati Scholarship” are as under:

(i) Number of scholarship per annum: 4000

(ii) One Girl per family whose family income is less than Rs 6 lakhs per annum

(iii) The candidates will be selected on merit at the qualifying examination

BIE extends date for Scholarship applications

The Board of Intermediate Education on Sunday informed that the last date for submission of fresh scholarship application forms by students, who have passed Intermediate Public Examination in March, 2014 and who are provisionally selected by the BIE for Scholarships under “Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University Students” (CSSS) admitted in Degree / Professional Colleges during the academic year 2014-15 has been extended from November 30 to December 31.

India offers scholarship to Afghan students

India offers around 1,000 scholarships every year to the Afghan students, which is sponsored by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).

The ICCR scholarship scheme for Afghanistan was launched in 2005.

At present, the Afghan students are pursuing courses in international studies, economics, bachelors’ degrees, B. Tech and many more programmes in various universities across India.

The ICCR provides 6,000 scholarships to foreign students from 30 countries, which are spread in more than 20 states and 120 educational institutions in India.
