MSM’s Qur’an Knowledge Exam on September 13

Kochi, July 30: The Mujahid Students’ Movement (AP faction) will conduct a Qur’an Knowledge Exam in Ramazan. The exam is conducted as part of the organisation’s Ramazan campaign ‘Holy Qur’an: Path of Light for the Humanity’.

The primary round of the exam will be held on September 13 and the final on October 18. The exams will be conducted in various centres inside and outside the state.

50,000 apply for teaching jobs in a day in Mexico

Mexico City, July 29: The education ministry in Mexico has received about 50,000 applications for teacher posts in less than 24 hours following the government’s resolution to curb corruption in the country’s education system.

Some 50,000 applied for teaching jobs in less 24 hours on the backdrop of government’s efforts to combat corruption within the education system, Mexico’s Education Minister Alonso Lujambio said Tuesday.

Universities beef up on German

Hyderabad, July 29: In a bid to veer city students towards learning foreign languages like German, the German Institute at the Goethe-Zentrum has announced a host of tie-ups with educational bodies and Universities in the City.

“Apart from the University of Hyderabad, Goethe Zentrum has ventured into Osmania University and the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) for setting up courses and language programmes therein,” revealed executive director Amita Desai at German theatre performance, held at a city school on Tuesday.

Assam to ban corporal punishment in schools

Guwahati, July 29: The Assam government will soon introduce legislation banning corporal punishment in schools after a Unicef report said the state topped the list of Indian schools where corporal punishment and humiliation of students was rampant.

‘We shall very soon ban corporal punishment in schools as such a system to rein in students has become obsolete and often leads to adverse impact on the students’ mental well being and trauma,’ Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told IANS.

A Unicef study said 99.56 percent of students in Assam schools were victims of corporal punishment.

Madhya Pradesh teacher held for molesting minor students

Bhopal, July 29: A teacher accused of molesting tribal girl students of Class 3 and 5 was arrested Wednesday in Vidisha district of Madhya Pradesh, police said.

Sanjeev Sharma, posted in a school run under the Shiksha Guarantee Scheme in tribal-dominated Nupur Tapra village, had July 24 stripped girls in a closed room under the pretext of taking measurement for their school uniform.

Vidisha is the home district of the Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

UK cuts costs, to outsource 100 IT jobs to India

London, July 29: More than 100 finance and IT jobs at the British Council are to be outsourced to India as part of a cost-cutting drive to save the taxpayer money, according to a report in The Times.

The report said that 500 of the council’s 1,300 British workers would have to go in the next 18 months to save 45 million pounds ($74.44 million) with more than a fifth of the posts being filled in India.

The Times did not cite a source for its story.

School protest stops S Mumbai

Mumbai, July 29: A protest by 300-odd students and parents of the New Era School on Hughes Road, demanding the reopening of the school, during peak hours on Tuesday caused a huge traffic snarl in South Mumbai. The six-lane arterial Peddar Road was blocked for hours and the police could not do much as there were scores of children among the protesters.

Sibal: No place for profit-making foreign varsities

New Delhi, July 29: As it plans to bring in a legislation to allow foreign universities to begin operations in India, the government on Tuesday indicated that it would not allow profit-making foreign educational institutions to set up campuses in the country.

“The government policy is not to allow profit-making institutions even in India to flourish in the field of education because education is a charitable exercise,” Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal told the Rajya Sabha.

Indian companies lead recruitment drive at IIMs

Hyderabad, July 29: While recession kept most foreign multinationals away from the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) this year, it was Indian companies that came to their rescue.

MNC recruitments fell by 50 per cent across the IIMs, from 920 last March to 497 this year. In contrast, Indian companies increased their intake from 493 to 658.

Some MNCs hired students, but gave them deferred placements — that is, asking them to join several months later.

Ranchi, July 28: Around 30 students were forced to stand outside their school in Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand even as their examination was underway Tuesday because their parents had failed to pay the monthly fees, an official said.

The students of Holy Cross school were forced to leave the exam room as their parents had not paid the school fees for the month of July. Most of the students were aged below 10 years.

Teacher slapped Class 3 boy, finds magistrate

Chandigarh, July 28: A teacher who was accused of slapping a Class 3 boy several times at the prestigious St. John’s High School here has been held guilty by a magistrate, an official said Tuesday.

Sub-divisional magistrate Niharika Rai, who was probing the case of corporal punishment at the boys’ school, submitted her report late Monday.

‘I have got the final report. Now we are seeking legal opinion in this case and also told the school authorities to take appropriate action against the guilty teacher (Reema Talwar)’, Education-cum-Home Secretary Ram Niwas told IANS.

AP marches past others with 2 lakh engg seats!

Hyderabad, July 28: Andhra Pradesh is marching ahead of other States in technical education, at least quantitatively. With an additional intake of 35,000 seats in enginering colleges for the academic year 2009-10, the total number of seats to be filled under the convener quota rose to nearly 2 lakh (1,93,275 precisely).

With the latest intake, the State has surpassed its neighbours, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, which are also known for a high number of engineering colleges, by thousands of seats.

HC nod for polytechnic classes in engg colleges

Hyderabad July 28: In a blow to polytechnic colleges, the AP High Court on Monday permitted engineering colleges to introduce evening classes for polytechnic students. Justice G Rohini vacated the stay granted in a petition filed by Private Polytechnics Management Association. The counsel for the Government contended that there had been a phenomenal growth of technical institutions in the country. However, the polytechnic education has been lagging behind the degree-level education in engineering.

Oz college dupes Indians pursuing aviation course

Melbourne, July 28: Fate of several Indian students enrolled in a Sydney-based aviation college have been left in limbo after their dreams of acquiring commercial pilot license remained unfulfilled even after paying thousands of dollars.

In a latest scam which came to light after ABC TV channel programme ‘Four Corners’ exposed migration and education agents duping Indian students, Aerospace Aviation college that provides commercial pilot training, it was alleged, exploited international students besides ill treating Indian students.

Govt keen to appoint teachers

Apprehending difficulty in recruiting teachers after the passage of the Right to Education Bill in parliament, the state government is in a hurry to recruit teachers in primary schools on its own terms and conditions. The government is keen to recruit nearly 58,000 primary teachers, but faces stiff resistance from the PTTI trainees, who insist that despite their diplomas being declared invalid, priority should be given to them in the recruitment process.

Senior college teachers’ strike continues

Mumbai, July 28: The senior college strike by the Maharashtra Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organisations (MFUCTO) is set to continue.

The teachers’ union has decided to continue the strike, already in its third week, and has alleged that the state government is indulging in ‘doublespeak and distortion.’

“Rajesh Tope, Higher and Technical Education Minister, had announced earlier this month that the state cabinet has decided to revise the salaries of the striking college and university teachers.

New Delhi, July 28: With 29 students having been confirmed with the H1N1 virus till date and even more asked to stay home, several city schools are taking different steps to make up for the lost working days.

Springdales School, Pusa Road, has prepared programme lessons for students quarantined at home, principal Amita Wattal said. “We don’t want students to suffer,” she said, “so we have created programme lessons for them.”

1.3 lakh students get relief after second list in Mumbai

Mumbai, July 27: Students who could not manage to get a seat in the first merit list of junior college admissions have reason to cheer after second merit list as many of them have been allotted a seat in their choice of colleges.

In the second merit list announced on Sunday, more than 1.3 lakh students secured admission in their choice of college and stream.

The department of education has a message for students who could find a seat after second merit list, “Do not get disheartened, and await the declaration of the third allocation list.” 35,000 students are yet to secure admission.

Maharashtra University to sign MoU with Sydney University

Nagpur, July 27: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is to be signed between the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences and the University of Sydney.

The MoU has to be signed to offer Iternational Postgraduate Paediatric Certificate (IPPC) programme which is equivalent to Diploma in Child Health.

Once the MoU is signed, the University of Sydney will approach Medical Council of India for its nod.

The IPPC programme will be a one-year part time distant education programme. Students having MBBS degree are eligible for the course.

Indian journalist attacked in Australia, migration agent’s office raided

Sydney, July 27: An Indian journalist working undercover to expose migration and education scams in Australia was assaulted over the weekend following which officials on Monday raided the office of an agent allegedly involved in exploiting foreign students.

The Immigration Department said the raid took place in the central business district here, but did not identify the agent.

ABC News Online reported that the woman was attacked possibly because of her work. She was working on a report for the Four Corners programme.

The former Director, Space Applications Centre, Ahmedabad and presently Director of Centre for Space Science and Technology Education in Asia and the Pacific, Dehradun, affiliated to the United Nations, Dr. Joseph was born in Chenganoor, Kerala on 4th August 1938.

No plan to set up single Class 12 Board: Govt

New Delhi, July 27: Government has no plans to set up a single national level board in place of the existing 33 state boards which conduct Class XII examinations, the Lok Sabha was informed on Monday.

Minister of State for Human Resource Development D Purandeswari said the government has no plans to set up a national or universal board instead of the existing boards for Class XII examinations.
