Parents Association writes to Sonia Gandhi for regulating school fees

New Delhi, August 02: Unhappy over arbitrary fee hikes in private schools across the county, the All India Parents Association Saturday asked the National Advisory Council Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to recommend to the central government bringing a law to regulate fees in schools.

The association in a letter to Gandhi said that while the government schools lack basic academic infrastructure, the good quality unaided private schools exploit the parents by charging huge amounts.

Kachru ragging case: Fast track court resumes trial

Dharamsala, August 02: A fast track court in this Himachal Pradesh town Monday resumed the trial against four medical students, accused of ragging to death first year student Aman Kachru last year, after they surrendered last week on cancellation of their bail.

The accused – Ajay Verma, Naveen Verma, Abhinav Verma and Mukul Sharma – surrendered in a local court here July 29 after the Himachal Pradesh High Court cancelled the bail given to them by the trial court.

Indo-US higher education summit inaugurated in Mumbai

Mumbai, July 31: With an aim to increase access and enhance quality of Indo-US higher education, a two-day summit for higher education was inaugurated here Saturday.

The summit is a part of the golden jubilee celebrations of the Indo-American Society.

Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal was the chief guest at the inaugural function.

He spoke about his vision of a nation where every child has the opportunity to go to school and get access to higher studies, irrespective of his or her paying capacity.

Jamia’s department ranked as Centre of Excellence

New Delhi, July 30: The Department of History and Culture at Jamia Millia Islamia has been rated as a Centre of Excellence in a survey, an official said Friday.

A survey called ‘Arts and Humanities Research Mapping, India’ was conducted by India Foundation for the Arts, Bangalore. The survey further listed 32 ‘centers of excellence’ from all over the country.

Wear burqa to teach here

Kolkata, July 30: Thee was a major controversy in a Kolkata college after the students’ union decided to stop a guest lecturer from teaching unless she came in burqa.

The lecturer Shirin Middya has not been allowed to hold classes in Aliah University, Bengal’s first Muslim University. Shirin and her family however have refused to relent. They say she would wear a burqa only if she wished to and not under prerssure.

Tintu, Mayookha shine at Asian All-Star Athletics Meet

New Delhi, July 29: India’s Tintu Luka and Mayookha Johney’s performance in the women’s 800 metres and long jump events respectively stood out on the first day of the Asian All-Star Athletics Meet, a test event for the Commonwealth Games, at the remodelled Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here Thursday.

The meet is in its third edition, but like in the past, has attracted very few top athletes of Asia.

India, Britain to augment cooperation in education

New Delhi, July 29: India and Britain Thursday decided to launch a new phase of the India-UK Education and Research Initiative, as they discussed prospects of further cooperation in the field of education.

According to a joint statement issued at the end of the visit of British Prime Minister David Cameron, the first phase of this jointly-funded initiative had helped establish over 400 collaborative ventures between Indian and British universities and schools between 2006 and 2011.

New Delhi, July 29: India and Britain Thursday discussed cooperation in education when Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal met his British counterpart, Minister of State for Universities and Science David Willets.

According to an official statement from the HRD ministry, the two sides in principle agreed to the exchange of research scholars. Sibal, however, pointed to the issue of equivalence of degrees which becomes a problem in the mobility of students.

Orissa examines textbook after protest by JMM

Bhubaneswar/Ranchi, July 29: The Orissa government Wednesday said it is examining complaints over allegedly objectionable remark about the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) in a state text book, a decision that followed protests by the party.

‘It has come to our notice and we are examining it (the content in the book). We will take appropriate action soon,’ Madhu Sudan Padhi, secretary of the Orissa’s higher education department told IANS.

Government model schools still distant reality

New Delhi, July 29: The 6,000 Model schools to be set up by the Human Resource Development ministry is still a distant reality as data from the ministry shows that only two states have so far utilised the funds allocated for the project.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, HRD minister Kapil Sibal informed that 434 Model schools have been sanctioned for 12 states so far in the economically backward blocks.

According to the information given to the lower House, Punjab and Tamil Nadu are the only two states which have submitted the amount utilisation certificates to the centre.

Madras University signs 10 MoUs with US varsities

Chennai July 28: The Madras University had signed MoUs with 10 universities in the US as part of its plan to internationalise higher education, its Vice Chancellor G Thiruvasagam said here today.

Inaugurating ‘Experience America’ expo, organised by the US Consulate here as part of its plan to showcase educational opportunities in that country, he said international exchange in education should be a “two-way process where students, faculty and knowledge were exchanged and not merely received by us”.

OU Exams Postponed

Hyderabad, July 26: Examinations of the Osmania University slated for July 26 and 27 have been postponed.

Stating this here in a press release, Mr Sivaraj, Controller of Examinations, said that the decision to postpone the elections was taken in view of the by-elections. He said further dates of the examinations would be announced later.

Indians most confident globally about job prospects: Nielsen

New Delhi, July 25: Indians are the most optimistic about job prospects and personal finances globally, according to a survey by consultancy firm Nielsen.

According to the Nielsen Global Consumer Confidence report, 92 percent of Indians were optimistic about their job prospects in the next 12 months.

Indians were also the most optimistic about the state of their personal finances in the next 12 months. Nearly 14 percent of Indians think it is an ‘excellent’ time to buy the things that they want and need and 71 percent think it is a ‘good’ time to make purchases.

Congress will ensure education to all: Sibal

Lucknow, July 25: Slamming the Uttar Pradesh government for demanding funds for implementing Right to Education Act in the state, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal today said the Congress would ensure education to all after it comes to power in the state in 2012 Assembly polls.

“There should be no politics with education and future of the children. The UP government had already got some answer in 2009 Lok Sabha election and rest it will get in 2012 Assembly polls,” Sibal told reporters in reply to a question about the Mayawati government’s demand regarding RTE.

New Courses At OU Nizam College

Hyderabad, July 25: The Department of Sociology, Nizam College (autonomous) Osmania University is offering three add-on courses — Diploma in Development Management Studies and Development Research Methodologies (one year), Diploma in Criminology and Correctional Administration (one year) and Certificate Course in Human Relations and Personality Development (six months).

20 new vocational training courses in Delhi

New Delhi, July 24: Delhi Industries Minister Haroon Yusuf Friday announced that 20 vocational training programmes have been introduced for the unemployed youth.

‘It is important to impart appropriate skills development training to our existing and emerging manpower to assure maximum employment to the people of Delhi. That is why we have also taken a decision to upgrade our professional and technical training facilities,’ Yusuf told reporters.

He said already there is a training centre at Jhandewalan, and two more at Waziribad will come up soon.

Student unrest over fee hike hits Visva Bharati

Kolkata, July 24: Students of Visva Bharati, the university set up by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, have been on an indefinite strike since the past six days protesting a hike in tuition fees. The varsity authorities Friday held talks with students’ representatives but failed to break the impasse.

The authorities Friday morning convened a meeting with the heads of different departments and representatives of students, but no fruitful result was yielded.

Class 12 boy thrashed for using mobile in school, hospitalised

Lucknow, July 24: A Class 12 student of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Uttar Pradesh’s Etawah district had to be hospitalised after being allegedly thrashed by his teachers for using a mobile phone in school. A probe has been ordered, officials said Friday.

The Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are schools governed by the ministry of human resource and development. The student, Rakesh Kumar, was allegedly beaten by teachers Thursday.

Secondary education to be made universal too: President

Kunjpura, July 24: The universalisation of secondary education is on the government’s agenda as part of important forward movements in school education, President Pratibha Patil said here Saturday.

Addressing the golden jubilee founder’s day celebrations of Sainik School (military school) in Kunjpura near Karnal, about 120 km from Chandigarh, Patil said: ‘In India, primary education is now a fundamental right and is free and compulsory. We are hoping to universalise secondary education as well. These are important forward movements in the school education sector.’

‘No child to be deprived of education if father in jail’

New Delhi, July 23: No child should be deprived of right to education just because the father is in judicial custody, a Delhi court has said.

“Free and compulsory education for children is a Constitutional obligation of the state as provided under Article 45 of the Constitution of India and therefore no child under the age of 14 years should be deprived of the primary eduction only because his father is in judicial incarceration,” Additional sessions judge Kamini Lau said.

Delhi HC asks school to admit student in class IX

New Delhi, July 23: The Delhi High Court today asked Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidyalaya(RPVV), a school run by Delhi government, to admit within a week a minor boy who was denied the same on the ground that he came from a Delhi University-run school that did not not come under Delhi Education Act.
