Midday meal scheme to get paltry hike of 6cr this year

New Delhi, February 09: The Midday Meal (MDM) scheme catering to 12 crore children is all set to increase manifold with the implementation of the Right to Education Act � is likely to get a paltry increase of Rs 6 crore in the 2011-12 general budget. Last year, Rs 10,380 crore was allocated for the scheme.

The likelihood of a nominal increase in allocation to MDM, sources said, could seriously affect the implementation of the RTE Act. “There would not be enough fund to feed lakhs of new and out-ofschool children who will come into the school system this year,” a source said.

Recession blues over, IIFT places all students

New Delhi, February 09: The Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) placement session on Tuesday got a huge response from recruiters as the institute achieved 100% placement. Post-recession, the highest domestic package offered this year is of Rs 15.51 lakh, up from Rs 13 lakh last year. It also witnessed a 10% increase in the average domestic package. The highest international package this year is US$ 150,000, which was offered by Olam International.

Indian authors on new reading list of CBSE

New Delhi, February 09: The Central Board of Secondary Education(CBSE) has sent out new reading list for students of classes V to XII, prepared in consultation with the Association of Writers and Illustrators for Children (AWIC), in order to inculcate the habit of reading among school children. The list for the first time include works by Indian authors.

EThames Graduate School launches India campus

Schoolchildren’s death – Himachal to conduct surveys

Shimla, February 09: A day after four students were buried alive after a boundary wall of their school collapsed in Himachal Pradesh’s Una district, Education Minister I.D. Dhiman on Tuesday ordered a survey of all schools in the state to check unsafe buildings.

“Dhiman directed the education department to conduct a survey of the school buildings to avert any mishap in future in educational institutions,” an official told the sources here.

He said the step was taken to ensure the safety of students in the schools.

Popular students more likely to bully peers – study

Washington, February 09: Popular students are more likely to torment their peers, says a new study.

“Our findings underscore that attaining and maintaining a high social status likely involves some level of antagonistic behavior,” said Robert Faris, assistant professor of sociology at University of California-Davis, the study co-author.

The study also finds that students in the top two percent of the school social hierarchy — along with those at the bottom — are the least aggressive, the journal American Sociological Review reports.

Tusker creates panic at IIT Kharagpur

Kolkata, February 09: The elite Indian Institute of Technology at Kharagpur suffered a blackout and lockdown for more than three hours after a wild elephant entered the campus and caused panic among the students, faculty and staff, officials said.

The elephant entered the campus around 7 p.m. on Sunday after knocking down a portion of the boundary wall. The staff hurriedly closed all campus gates, leaving one at the rear open for the tusker to exit from.

All lights of the campus were switched off as the elephant was turning violent and seemed to be charging at lights.

Dental college students call off stir as principal removed

Chandigarh, February 09: Students of a dental college affiliated to Panjab University (PU) on Monday ended their six-day-old strike as the varsity authorities agreed to remove the institute’s director, Krishan Gauba.

“The committee has recommended the repatriation of (institute’s director Krishan) Gauba and PU syndicate has approved it. In fact Gauba had himself expressed his willingness to go back to PGIMER (Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research). Now we would soon appoint the new principal of the dental institute,” Vice Chancellor R.C. Sobti told the sources.

Sufi singer Zila Khan to perform at Jamia

Nursery admissions – several children fail to secure seats, parents worried

New Delhi, February 09: Several parents in Delhi have been left stressed after their children have failed to secure nursery admission in any of the schools they had applied to, regardless of the number of schools they had applied in.

According to a chartered accountant father, Rahul Kapoor who had applied to 11 schools to get his son admitted to nursery, the reason for his son not being able to find admission anywhere is due to losing out on the alumni and sibling points.

Probe poor quality work at new schools: Badal

Chandigarh, February 10: Taking serious note of the poor quality of construction work and the use of sub-standard furniture in all the 21 new model schools established under a centrally-sponsored scheme in Punjab, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal Wednesday ordered an inquiry into the matter.

Badal has sought action against the erring officers and contractors for the alleged irregularities. The decision was taken by Badal in a meeting with the principals of these schools here Wednesday.

50% marks compulsory for EAMCET

Hyderabad, February 9: Mr Christopher, Secretary of State Council of Higher Education, has said that 50 per cent marks would be compulsory for getting qualified under convener quota of EAMCET.

Talking to the media here on Tuesday, Mr Christopher said the decision was taken to improve the quality of education. He said orders to this effect were received from the All India Technical Education Board. These orders would be implemented from this year itself, he added. He has, however, maintained that the decision would not have any influence on the admissions.

Hyderabad, February 08: A division bench of the AP High Court comprising Justice Ghulam Mohammad and Justice KG Shanker on Monday stayed the consideration of Dr S Jaya Bhasker Reddy for promotion to the post of a professor in pathology pending disciplinary charges against him. The bench made the interim order suspending an order of the State Administrative Tribunal.

‘No new engineering colleges, please’

Kakinada, February 07: Andhra Pradesh State Council for Higher Education chairman P Jaya Prakash Rao today said they urged the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) not to sanction new engineering colleges in the state as there are already 700 engineering colleges.

In a press note, the district Social Welfare deputy director Mr Vijay Kumar said that though large number of students applied for scholarships, the details were not recorded before the due date, and hence the date was extended for three more days for the benefit of the students.
