Supplementary exams to begin on May 27

Hyderabad, May 27: The advanced supplementary examinations for intermediate students will commence from May 27 to June 4 in the state.

Exams will be conducted from 8 am to 11 am and 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm for first and second year students, respectively.

They will be held at 1, 688 examination centres and about 9.67 lakh students, from both general and vocational streams, will take the exams.

State government to hold Education Week in June

Hyderabad, May 26: In pursuit of the promises made to bring reform in education during the Rachabanda programme, the state Government is planning to organise an ‘Education Week’ across the state next month.

The decision to organise the programme was taken at a review meeting chaired by the Chief Minister, held on Wednesday.

The focus of the programme will be on quality of education, universalisation of education and to ensure infrastructure and other facilities in education.

Wrong question deleted from Eamcet paper

Hyderabad, May 26: One question has been deleted each from engineering, agricultural and medicine stream question papers in the recently held Eamcet because of an error in framing of question, JNTU-H officials said while releasing the key of Eamcet.

JNTU-H vice-chancellor DN Reddy addressing a press conference said that the erroneous questions were deleted since there was ambiguity in framing of the question.

”Hence the aggregate marks in both engineering, agricultural and medicine stream will be reduced to 159 instead of the actual 160 marks,” Reddy said.

Microsoft CEO hails IIT students

New Delhi, May 26: Prestigious IITs today got a thumbs up from Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer who hailed contributions of the students of these institutes and wanted to see some of the “finest and brightest” Indian minds with him at his office.

Ballmer also hailed the research work being done by the students and faculty and interacted with professors of the institute.

On a visit to the IIT-Delhi campus, the Micrsoft CEO closeted with faculty of the Computer Science Department of the IIT and got to know from them the research works being done on computers and other technologies.

New Delhi, May 26: The Hindu Responding to Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh’s views on IIT faculty, Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said IITs were aimed to produce engineering graduates initially and it is just lately that focus has shifted to research.

IIT-JEE results declared

New Delhi, May 25: Putting an end to the wait of over 4.85 lakh students, the results of the joint entrance examination of the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT-JEE) were declared Wednesday.

The results were declared at 9 a.m. and students can see the results online on the JEE website, said an official, adding that counselling for all successful candidates will be online.

For the first time, students will get to see scanned answer sheets online from June 4.

AP students capture top 7 of 10 spots in IIT JEE

JNTUK, Michigan university sign pact

Kakinada, May 24: Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University- Kakinada entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Central Michigan University on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, JNTUK vice-chancellor Allam Appa Rao said the tie-up would help expand the research programmes of the varsity. It would also benefit the university students a lot, he said. JNTUK foreign university relations director KV Muralikrishna was also present on the occasion.

Girls outshine boys in CBSE class 12 exams

New Delhi, May 23: Girls once again outshone boys in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) class 12 examinations, results of which were declared Monday in seven regions across the country.

The pass percentage of girls was 86.93 percent, compared to 77.83 percent for boys, a CBSE spokesperson said.

The overall pass percentage registered an increase of 1.84 percent over 2010 and stood at 81.71 percent.

Chennai topped the list of overall pass percentage with 91.32 percent, followed by Ajmer with 85.5 percent. Delhi stood third with a pass percentage of 85.45 percent.

CBSE results for Class XII at 10am today

New Delhi, May 23: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will declare the results of the Senior School Certificate Examination (Class XII) on Monday at 10am. As usual schools will put up the results, but candidates can also view their results on the internet. In addition, they can access their results through the interactive voice response system (IVRS) or short message services (SMS). The results for the Patna region will be declared on May 27, Friday.

Pass percentage in SSC results increases

Hyderabad, May 21: There was 1.47 percent improvement in the pass percentage in SSC examination this year as against 83.1 pass percentage in 2001 and 81.63 percent in 2010.

The Minister for Secondary Education, Mr Parthasarathi, released the SSC results at Directorate of Government Examinations.

West Godavari bags six of top ren ranks in CEEP

Hyderabad, May 20: About 1,84,932 candidates (about 84.41 per cent) qualified for the Common Entrance Examination for admission into Polytechnics (CEEP 2011) the results of which were released by minister for higher and technical education C Damodara Rajanarasimha on Thursday.

A Anirudh of Ranga Reddy district bagged the first rank with 116 out of 120 marks, Sravya Puvvala bagged the second with 115 marks and Gadde Devendra Kumar bagged the third place with 114 marks. Out of the top ten ranks, students from West Godavari bagged six ranks.

Hike in diet allowance for minority students

Hyderabad, May 20: Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy has agreed to sanction diet and maintenance allowances to all eligible minority students on par with BC Welfare, Social Welfare and Tribal Welfare students.

The additional financial commitment for this is around Rs 19 crore.

He agreed to extend funds for enhanced support to economic assistance programmes for minorities at a review meeting with the Minister for Minorities Welfare Mohd Ahmadullah and other officials.

ECET for diploma holders and graduates

Hyderabad, May 20: The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad is conducting ECET- 2011 for diploma holders and B Sc graduates in mathematics for lateral entry admission into engineering and pharmacy courses on May 20 from 10 am to 1 pm in 43 test centres in the State. As many as 25,134 students have registered for the test.

93 per cent candidates turn up for ICET

Vishakapatnam, May 19: Integrated Common Entrance Test (ICET-2011) for admission into MBA and MCA courses in all universities across Andhra Pradesh was conducted successfully by Andhra University, Visakhapatnam on behalf of the Andhra Pradesh State Council for Higher Education, Hyderabad.

Convener of ICET-2011 GSN Raju said 93.4 per cent of 1,50,800 applicants appeared for the test at 276 test centres in 25 regional centres of the state. For the first time, ICET conducted the test at Amalapuram of East Godavari and Siddipeta in Medak districts.

HC refuses to stay notification to declare Jamia minority institution

New Delhi, May 19: In a relief for Jamia Millia Islamia University, the Delhi High Court Wednesday refused to stay a notification of National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI) granting it the status of a minority institution.

“We will not stay the notification of the NCMEI,” a division bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Sanjiv Khanna said. The court, which was hearing a bunch of PILs on the issue, meanwhile, asked the Centre to clarify its stand as to whether it was in favour of the grant of minority status to the varisity or not.

Goutam Buddha University marks Buddha Purnima

Greater Noida, May 17: The Gautam Buddha University here Tuesday marked Buddha Poornima with a seminar focussing on Buddhism in India.

The seminar, held in the main hall of the university’s Jyotiba Phule Meditation Centre, attracted a number of scholars, university teachers and students.

Skill Centres for professional course students

Hyderabad, May 16: The department of higher education is starting 25 Skill Development Centres (SDCs), one in each district, in the new academic year to impart specialised skills to students of professional colleges to enhance their employability.

Officials of the department conveyed this to chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy at a meeting held here on Sunday to review the new initiatives and programmes of the department.

He lauded the department for launching Jawahar Knowledge Centres in almost all degree colleges in the state.

ICSE Class X and ISC Class XII results tomorrow

New Delhi, May 16: The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) is expected to release the results of its Class X (ICSE) and Class XII (ISC) exams at 3pm on Tuesday, May 17, 2011. Indiatimes will provide the results through SMS, using its 58888 service, and also through a special website (www.cisce.timesofindia.com). The CISCE is a private, non-governmental board of school education. The exams were conducted from February 28 to March 26, 2011.

Delhi HC reserves verdict on prohibiting schools from fee hike

New Delhi, May 14:The Delhi High Court today reserved its verdict on a PIL alleging that despite CAG’s indictment of 25 private schools for accounting malpractices including faking losses, the city government has allowed them
to hike tuition fee.

A division bench of Justices A K Sikri and Siddharth Mridul reserved the order after counsel for the petitioner, city government and the counsel for private schools completed their arguments.

Over a lakh applicants for Jamia’s 7,000 seats

New Delhi, May 12: The Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has sold 114,244 forms for the varsity’s approximately 7,000 seats with courses like management and engineering the most sought-after, a varsity official said Thursday.

“The figure of sold forms is till May 9 and the seats are spread over 231 professional and non-professional courses in 36 departments and 17 centres of excellence and research,” a Jamia official said.

“It is an overwhelming response as the last date of receiving completed application forms in many courses is over,” the official said.
