2 crore Indian children study in English-medium schools

The last eight years have seen a staggering rise in the number of children studying in English-medium schools across the country. Data on school enrolment for 2010-11 shows that, for the first time, the number of children enrolled in English-medium schools from Classes I to VIII has crossed the two crore mark – a 274% rise since 2003-04.

CBSE board exams begin today

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) board exams for Class X and XII will begin today. For Class XII students, the first paper will be of English and for class X pupils, it will be the painting exam.

Tense students in the capital are buried in books, some in a race to finish their courses while others to revise. Doctors, however, advise them not to over-study and get a good night’s sleep.

With English being the first exam, the stress levels are low among the students.

4.5% reservation for minorities in IITs from this year

Hyderabad, February 24: There is good news for IIT aspirants from the minority community. The IIT-JEE Admission Committee has decided to implement 4.5 per cent reservation for them within the 27 per cent seats meant for the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) from this year.

Those minority candidates who had submitted the application forms online and have not mentioned their status can do so on the IIT-JEE website — http://jee.iitd.ac.in/obcminority.php — by giving an undertaking that they have a minority status and would submit the certificate before the exam on April 8.

PECET notification on March 12

The notification for Physical Education Common Entrance Test (PECET) for admission into physical education courses across the State will be issued on March 12.

PECET chairman and Acharya Nagarjuna University in-charge Vice-Chancellor K Viyanna Rao on Thursday said that the notification for the graduate and under-graduate physical education courses will be issued on March 12. The sale of applications would begin from March 12 and the last date for submission of filled in application forms will be April 26.

Dubai, February 04: Online job opportunities in the UAE saw a 36 per cent jump from December 2010, according to the latest Monster Employment Index.

This year-over-year growth (from December 2010 to December 2011) was robust and online recruitment activity in the country edged up four per cent between November and December last year.

Education tops the annual growth chart while engineering, construction and real estate lead all sectors in month-on-month growth in the country. Healthcare continues to be the leading annual gainer among occupational groups.

Indian-American student triggers Harvard probe

Washington, Febuary 03: A complaint from an Indian-American student who was near the top of his high school class but was rejected by both Harvard and Princeton universities has triggered an investigation by the US Education Department.

The unnamed Indian-American student in California complained that the two universities discriminate against Asian-Americans in undergraduate admissions, according to a media Bloomberg report.

According to the Education Department’s Office of Civil Rights the complaint was received Aug 22 and the allegations “accepted for investigation” Jan 11.

Indo-British MEF scholarships: date extended

Education Entrance tests at MANUU

TET for B.Ed, D.Ed, Urdu/Hindi pandit candidates

Hyderabad, June 11: From this year onwards government has made it mandatory, to clear Teachers Eligibility Test (TET), for the candidates who have done teacher’s training including D.Ed, B.Ed and language pandit training. For this purpose central exam is scheduled on June 26 and APTET on July 31. Forms must be submitted online only.

The last dates of submission of fee and form are 16th and 17th June respectively.

TET coaching for Urdu and English media candidates is provided at Mahboob Husain Jigar Hall, Siasat premises, Abids between 4 to 7 pm.
