Visva-Bharati row: Court issues contempt notice against PM, others

The Calcutta High Court Friday issued a contempt notice against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is the chancellor of Visva-Bharati University, and other officials in the incident where a class 5 student of a varsity school was asked to lick her urine as punishment for bed-wetting.

The direction was given by the bench of Chief Justice J.N. Patel and Justice Sambudha Chakraborty while hearing a public interest litigation which claimed that the Visva-Bharati, by inflicting corporal punishment, has violated the court’s earlier directive against the form of punishment.

IGNOU opens admission for three visual arts courses

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has started the admission process for three courses in visual arts with an aim to develop creative and aesthetics sensibilities of the students, an official said Thursday.

The three visual arts certificate programmes in painting, applied art and sculpture can be pursued by those who have passed their 10th standard board exam, said the varsity.

Jharkhand to hold talks with villagers for IIM, IIIT land

Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun Munda Wednesday constituted a five-member team to hold talks with villagers protesting against the acquisition of 227 acres of land for building educational institutions on the outskirts of state capital Ranchi.

The Jharkhand High Court Tuesday directed the government to hold talks with the villagers to acquire land for three institutions – an Indian Institute of Management (IIM), an Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) and a law university – and submit a report before next hearing July 16.

17 teachers used fake certificates to get govt job

Seventeen government school teachers have been found to have allegedly got their jobs using fake documents at Chilkhana in Saharanpur district.

A case of cheating has been registered against these teachers, police said.

The principal of the BTC training centre Sanjay Upadhye told reporters here today that during verification educational certificates of 17 teachers were found to be fake.

The education department is also considering dismissal of these teachers from service, he added.

New courses in journalism at st. joseph’s college

Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) has approved two Journalism courses in the Mass Communication Department of St. Joseph’s Degree and PG College, King Koti, from the 2012-13 academic year.

In a pressnote here today, College principal Dr V.K. Swamy stated that APSCHE has approved 3-year B.A. (Journalism, Psychology and English Literature) and two-year Master in Communication Journalism (MCJ). The department is already running a three-year under-graduate course BA (Mass Communication and Journalism).

AP EAMCET ranks and result 2012 ‎declared

Andhra Pradesh EAMCET 2012 Results and ranks were declared on Friday (June 29, 2012) at 6 pm.

The Andhra Pradesh state council of Higher education made elaborate arrangements to help candidates check their results in a seamless manner.

300 more MBBS seats from Sept

Aspirants aiming to study medicine in AIIMS-like institutes have reasons to cheer now as 300 more MBBS seats will be available from September this year.

The bonanza comes in the wake of the government’s decision to make the much-awaited six AIIMS-like institutes in the country operational and start MBBS admissions from September.

‘Don’t teach maths or physics to kids on Thursdays’

Schools should not teach difficult subjects like mathematics and physics to children on Thursdays because it was “the hardest day of the week”, Russia’s chief sanitary doctor has said in a recommendation.

“Children have their own bio-rhythms and Thursday is the hardest day of the week,” RIA Novosti quoted Gennady Onishchenko as telling the Ekho Moskvy radio station in an interview.

“Therefore, it is not recommended to teach difficult subjects like mathematics and physics on Thursdays because those subjects require a heavier load on the brain,” he said.

New IIT entrance test pattern gets mixed reactions from alumni

The compromise between the human resource development ministry and IIT Council over the entrance exam pattern for admission to the engineering institutes Wednesday garnered mixed reactions from the IIT alumni.

“Most of the concerns have been addressed which is a good thing, and I think the IITs will be able to maintain their autonomy,” IIT Faculty Federation secretary Atul Mittal told IANS.

“This is a step in the positive direction,” he added.

IITs retain hold on JEE examination

The human resource development ministry and IIT Council Wednesday arrived at a consensus over the entrance exam pattern for admission to the prestigious engineering institutes with an agreement on a new entrance test formula proposed by the IITs.

The agreement was reached at a meeting of the IIT Council convened in the capital to discuss the proposed common entrance test after opposition from some of the IITs. The meeting was attended by directors of all IITs.

School-on-wheels launched in Delhi

A non-governmental organisation (NGO) Wednesday launched a mobile learning centre for slum children in Delhi. The school-on-wheels was flagged off by east Delhi Mayor Annapoorna Mishra.

Launched by NGO ‘Save the Children’, in collaboration with Aviva Life Insurance Company, the centre comes equipped with trainers, teachers and counsellors. The Mobile Learning Centre (MLC) will work with underprivileged children in slum clusters in and around east Delhi’s Subhash Nagar.

Bihar to bring IT to madrassas

The Bihar government plans soon to bring information technology (IT) to the state’s madrassas for modern education, Minority Welfare Minister Shahid Ali Khan has said.

“It’ll help madrassa students to learn about the benefits of IT in day-to-day life,” Khan said.

He said the government would spend Rs.28 crore on the project.

Though the union government began the process of modernising madrassas in 1994, the state government introduced the process in Bihar in 2002.

Delhi University to declare its first cutoff today‎

The Delhi University on Monday announced its first cut-off list, amid anxiety in the Class 12 passout students who are hoping to get admissions in the prestigious University.

However, unlike last year DU colleges did not announce 100 per cent cut off percentage following much hue and cry over the issue.

The prestigious Hindu college put a ceiling of 99.25 per cent to its cut-off range.

State government has issued orders to postpone DIET-CET 2012 till July 15. In a statement issued to media, convenor Surendar Reddy told this and said that the test is being postponed since the teachers are busy evaluating SSLC papers.

DIET CET 2012 was scheduled to be held on July 8, 2012.

Will change format if IITs have better idea: Sibal

Giving in to the IIT faculty and alumni, the government is understood to be considering accepting some of their demands like not taking plus-two board results into account for preparing the merit list under a new common entrance system for admission to undegraduate engineering courses.

Sources in the IIT faculty said that the government is considering this proposal to break the logjam over the proposed common entrance test.

They said that the ministry is actively considering not taking board results into account only for 2013 when the new system is implemented.
