‘Depressed’ Delhi woman kills daughter

New Delhi, June 16: Sharda, 50, of Block G, Jehangirpuri (northwest Delhi) set herself ablaze and jumped off the balcony of her first-floor house after allegedly strangling her 15-year-old daughter Chelu to death with a dupatta around 9 a.m. on Monday.

Sharda, who was allegedly depressed, is fighting for survival at TB Hospital, Kingsway Camp, after sustaining 70% burns.

“Yesterday [Sunday] evening, she was ranting about committing suicide and killing her daughter, a neighbour said, adding, “But I didn’t think she would do it.”

3 Indian Americans die as family plane plunges into river

Washington, June 16: Three Indian Americans, including an 11-year-old boy, were killed when a small family-owned plane nosedived into the Mohawk river on Sunday afternoon.

Albany-based hotelier George Kolath, who hails from Kerala, was entertaining his son and a doctor-friend when the Piper Cherokee went down shortly after taking off from the Mohawk Valley Airport, said Federal Aviation Administration spokesman, Jim Peters.

The bodies of the boy, George Kolath Jr., and the doctor, whose name was not released by authorities, were found, Kolath’s brother-in-law, Anil Paulose said.

Surat gangrape: NCW demands speedy justice for victim

Surat, June 16: Demanding speedy justice for the Surat rape case victim, the National Commission for Women (NCW) also asked the state government to ban early morning tution classes.

“The case should be tried in a fast-track court and the culprits should be convicted at the earliest, like it was done in the gangrape case in Rajasthan last year,” Manju Hembrom, who called on the 17-year-old victim today, said.

If the state government does not try the case in a fast-track court, the Commission may take suo motu cognizance in this matter,” Hembrom said.

Private plane crash kills 3 Indian Americans, including hotelier

New York, June 16:Police is investigating the cause of a crash of a single-engine family-owned plane that claimed the lives of an Indian American hotelier, a Kerala native, his 11-year-old son and an Indian American doctor friend in eastern New York.

New York State police said divers recovered the body of the plane’s owner, 41-year-old Mathai Kolath George, Monday. The bodies of his son, George Kolath, and 52-year-old Krishnan Raghavan were recovered Sunday.

Passengers harassed as Cathay Pacific cancels flight

New Delhi, June 16: Nearly 220 passengers, many of them with small children, were subjected to hours of ordeal at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) here Monday night after Hong Kong based airline Cathay Pacific suddenly cancelled its New Delhi-Hong Kong flight (CX-752).
All the passengers had checked in for boarding and were waiting to board the aircraft when the airline staff arrived to say that the flight stood cancelled.

“There are technical reasons for canceling the flight,” the airlines station manager told harried passengers, refusing to elaborate.

Ahmedabad, June 16: A woman hung self at her residence in Naroda on Sunday following mental and physical harassment for dowry. Her father has lodged a
complaint against her husband and family members.

According to the complaint by Ramshankar Mishra, a resident of Bhargav Society, Sardarnagar, his daughter Meetu, 24, was married to Shailesh Tiwari, an armyman posted at Pune base in 2004. New Delhi, June 16: A teenaged girl was found dead inside her house in JJ Colony in Jehangirpuri on Monday morning while her mother was found lying
outside severely injured. The incident happened around 9am.

According to police, while the child’s body was found in her bedroom, her mother had allegedly set herself afire and jumped from the first floor. According to DCP (northwest) N S Bundela, the woman had suffered severe burn injuries and battled for life for over 10 hours before she was declared dead.

Son kills father, arrested

New Delhi, June 16: A 65-year-old retired government clerk was killed allegedly by his son in the national capital over the elderly man’s “extra marital affair”, police said on Monday.

Satish Prakash, his friend Sahil, and two of their accomplices allegedly killed Raghubir Singh on June 13, they said.

Prakash and Sahil have been arrested, a senior police officer said, adding search is on to nab the other two involved in the murder.

Singh, a retired clerk with Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG), was murdered at his residence in Outer Delhi’s Alipur area, the police said.

Youth dies in scuffle over train seat

Mumbai, June 16: A fight over seats and boarding the train first-something that most Mumbai commuters go through every day-cost a 22-year-old Nalasopara youth his life on Monday morning.

Lavesh Palande was on his way to work when a scuffle with a fellow passenger, Anil Utekar (22), on platform number 1 of Nalasopara station resulted in the former’s death after he collided with a moving train. Palande’s widow, Smita, was inconsolable-they had wed in April and had moved into their dream home only two days ago.

Kasab breaks down seeing his gun-wielding photographs

Mumbai, June 15: Pakistani gunman Ajmal Kasab was seen weeping after photographs showing him firing at people at the CST railway station last year were produced before the court today.

As his photographs were taken on record by the court, Kasab was sitting with his head down and sounded low.

In the post-lunch session, when the witness was being cross examined, tears rolled down Kasab’s cheeks.

As judge M L Tahaliyani noticed him weeping, he asked, “Are you crying? What’s the matter?” Kasab stood up but did not say anything.

For Rs 110, man burns girl’s hands in hot oil

Varanasi, June 15: When 11-year-old Jyoti went to her relative’s house, she would have hardly thought about the nightmare of getting her hands burned in boiling oil as punishment for a mistake she hasn’t done.

Police are on the look out for Rustam of Kerakatpur village in the district on the charge of burning his cousin’s hands in boiling oil on Sunday. A case has been registered against him and his father.

Police said he did the cruel act on suspicion that she had stolen Rs 110 from his pocket.

Woman kills daughter, sets self on fire

New Delhi, June 15 : A 50-year-old woman strangled her teenage daughter to death and set herself ablaze in Jehangirpuri in north-west Delhi this morning, police said.

Sharda, a resident of Block G in Jehangirpuri, set herself on fire after killing her 15-year-old daughter and jumped off the first floor of the house at around 0900 hrs.

According to DCP(North-West) N S Bundela, Sharda suffered 70 per cent burns and was raced to hospital where her condition was stated to be critical.

Sharda’s husband was not home at the time of the incident.

Shiney Ahuja arrested on rape charges; to be produced in court

Mumbai, June 15: Bollywood actor Shiney Ahuja was arrested early on Monday on rape charges after preliminary tests conducted on his domestic help confirmed sexual assault, a senior police official said.

Ahuja, who was detained for questioning on Sunday night, is likely to be produced before a magistrate’s court later in the day.

The domestic help, who has been working at Ahuja’s residence in suburban Oshiwara, alleged that the actor had raped her on Sunday afternoon, the official said.

Ravi Poojary associate held in City

Banglore, June 15: Harish Tolar, a close aide of underworld don Ravi Poojary, was arrested by the City Crime Branch police in the early hours of Sunday, after an encounter.

Tolar, 33, who sustained injuries on his leg, has been admitted to Victoria Hospital and is stated to be out of danger.

The police launched a search operation after being tipped that Tolar was hiding in the City. They had also received information that Tolar was likely to pass through the Jnanabharati premises on Sunday morning in his car (KA 05 D 5542). A police team arrived near Jnanabharati and waited for him.

Three arrested for creating ruckus outside Fiza’s house

Mohali, June 15: Police here arrested three people in the early hours Monday for allegedly creating a ruckus outside the house of Anuradha Bali aka Fiza, the estranged wife of Chander Mohan alias Chand Mohammed.

‘We have registered a case against four people out of which three were arrested. Police have also impounded a Bolero car with a Haryana registration number. We are still investigating and expect to make more arrests today (Monday),’ Deepinder Singh, investigating officer of the case told IANS.

Police clueless to what drove NRI to kill wife, himself

Ludhiana, June 15: There has been no headway in the gory incident at Jaspal Bangar village where an NRI shot dead his wife and then killed himself with his licensed single barrel rifle in the wee hours of Saturday.

The post mortem on the bodies of the deceased NRI, Sardool Singh (65) and his wife Paramjit Kaur (62) was conducted at the Civil Hospital and then their bodies were handed over to their relatives for cremation.

2 more jail cops deny ’05 fight between Rajan and D-gang men

Mumbai, June 15: Two more jail employees, said to have witnessed a fight between aides of gangsters Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Rajan in the Arthur Road prison in 2005, have turned hostile in court, denying any such incident took place.

A police sub-inspector had been injured but he too has turned hostile. The last remaining witness in the jail alarm case is investigating officer Nankishore Potkare, who will be examined on June 22.

Man dies after boarding aircraft

Kolkata, June 15: A Bangladeshi air passenger on Sunday died of heart attack in a Dhaka-bound flight, minutes after boarding it at Kolkata airport.

“From preliminary investigation it appears that 75-year-old Gobinda Lal Saha died of heart attack after taking his seat in the plane at about 4.45 pm,” Medical officer at NSC Bose International Airport, Dr S E Dey, said.

The body has been handed over to police for postmortem, he added.

Saha along with his wife and son had came to India for treatment and was due to return today through an Air India Express flight, sources said.

Manager held for accidental death of man in theatre

Chennai, June 15: Police on Saturday arrested the manager of the cinema hall where a 40-year-old man died last week when he tripped and fell on an iron
rod protruding from the seat. He has been booked for negligence. Hunt is also on for the owner of the theatre who is said to be in Singapore.

The identify of the man, who died in the theatre last Thursday, is yet to be established. “We have printed pamphlets with the victim’s photograph and circulated them in the Kothavalchavadi area to trace his identity,” inspector G Hari Kumar of Kothavalchavadi police station told The Times Of India.
