150 Indians duped by job agent in Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, March 22: At least 150 Indians have been stranded here after being duped by their job agent who got them into Malaysia and allegedly fled with their documents and money, an Indian High Commission official said here today.

“Thirty nine Indians came to us to seek help, we immediately arranged for a shelter for them,” the official told PTI adding that according to the men at least 111 others were also stranded at various places in the city.

A local daily said most of them are from Bihar and Maharashtra.

Court issues warrants against Delhi cops in gang rape

New Delhi, March 22: A city court Monday issued bailable warrants against the investigating officer and an assistant commissioner of police (ACP) for failing to file charge sheet in the alleged gang rape of a private firm employee by three Delhi Jal Board (DJB) officials.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ajay Kumar Pandey issued the warrant of Rs.5,000 for April 14. The court expressed unhappiness over the fact that Delhi Police had not filed the charge sheet in the case.

Aircraft bomb episode: police yet to find leads

Bangalore/Thiruvanathapuram, March 22: Police are looking into the “security lapses” in connection with the crude explosive material detected in the cargo hold of the Kingfisher airline but said the object was not of high density though it could have exploded due to air pressure.

Police teams from the city and Thiruvananthapuram engaged in investigations said they were focusing their attention on “security lapses”.

Delhi trader shot at outside Gurgaon mall

Gurgaon, March 22: A Delhi based trader was shot at and injured by three unidentified youths outside a mall here Thursday following an argument with some men at a bar, police said Monday.

“Hardeep Kumar was shot at outside MGF Metropolitan mall on M.G. Road,” a senior police officer said.

Police said Kumar was coming out from Addiction bar.

“He had an argument with a few men inside the bar who had threatened him. Later, when he was getting inside his car, three men opened fire at him,” added the officer.

Joint CP to investigate SMS threat to Eknath Khadse

Mumbai, March 22: The Maharashtra government today said Joint CP (Crime)?of Mumbai police would investigate the SMS threat to Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Eknath Khadse.

Making a statement in the Lower House, Home Minister R R Patil said he had seen the SMS and the number has been provided to Joint CP (Crime) Rakesh Maria for investigation.

He said the Thane police commissioner’s office has also received a call from the same number last night.

Man arrested for misbehaving with air hostess

New Delhi, March 22: An 36-year-old man, who allegedly misbehaved with an air hostess on an Air India flight from Saudi Arabia, was arrested today at the international airport here

Subhash Chandra was apprehended after the air hostess lodged a complaint with the police this morning soon after the landing of the aircraft at around 6.30 am, a senior police official said.

The air hostess complained that the accused misbehaved with her on board the flight. She informed the matter to crew members. When they intervened, Chandra allegedly misbehaved with them also.

Court rejects plea to summon Headley as witness

Mumbai, March 22: A Mumbai special court hearing the 26/11 trial Monday rejected a plea by one of the co-accused to make terror suspect David Headley, currently in a US jail, a witness in the Mumbai attack case.

Opposing the plea by Sabahuddin Ahmed to examine Headley as a witness, Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said that Headley was already an accused in the US court and hence could not give evidence as a witness.

Nikam further said that even if Headley was extradited to India, he would be treated as an accused and not as a witness in the 26/11 trial.

Indian Mujahideen terrorist not a juvenile, affirms AIIMS

New Delhi, March 22: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Monday told a city court that a suspected Indian Mujahideen terrorist, who claimed to be a minor, was very well a major.

A report of the AIIMS’ medical board, submitted to the court of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja, said that the age of Salman Ahmed alias Chotu is somewhere between 25 to 26 years.

The AIIMS was March 15 directed to constitute a medical board to determine the age of Ahmed after his counsel claimed the accused was a minor at the time of the Delhi serial blasts in September 2008.

Girl set afire after she resists rape attempt

Betul (MP), March 22: A tribal girl was set afire by a person after she resisted his rape attempt in Hamlapur area near here, police said today.

The 18-year-old, who works as a labourer, sustained 60 per cent burns and her condition was stated to be critical.

The girl was sitting outside her aunt’s house when the accused identified as Gora Gond forcibly took her to a nearby field and tried to rape her last night, they said.

However, when she resisted, Gora, who too is a tribal, set her afire after pouring kerosene on her and fled, police said.

MLAs scramble behind Walia to be ‘caught on camera’

New Delhi, March 22: With budget day being one of the few days when TV cameras are allowed in the Delhi Assembly, ruling party MLAs were seen wanting to grab as much footage as possible.

Some MLAs like Niraj Basoya, Anil Chowdhary and Arvinder Singh Lovely, not the Minister but legislator from Deoli, sat directly behind Finance Minister A K Walia who was presenting the budget to ensure their space on TV.

However, their on air fame was short-lived as they had to beat a hasty retreat back to their designated seats after being told to do so by Speaker Yoganand Shastri.

12 vehicles torched as violence spreads to more areas

Rae Bareli, March 22: Some 12 vehicles, including a roadways bus, were torched as violence, which first erupted in Parsadepur town, spread to neighbouring areas in Rae Bareli district of Uttar Pradesh, officials said here today.

A roadways bus and 11 other vehicles were set ablaze in Deeh area and Purelagi village late last night, they said.

Earlier, a clash between two communities over the route of a religious procession in Parsadepur town left 18 injured.

Over 36 people had been arrested in connection with the violence, the officials said.

Mumbai, March 22: City Police have recorded the statements of two security guards of a luxury hotel in suburban Powai from where an allegedly drunken 40-year-old American national had leaped out on Saturday morning sustaining grievous multiple injuries.

Momsen Curtis John, a cabin crew member of Northwest Airlines, had jumped from the first floor lobby of Renaissance Hotel and was undergoing treatment in Hiranandani hospital, police said today.

2 killed, five hurt in Kashmir accidents

Srinagar, March 22: Two persons, including a girl, were killed and five others injured in separate road accidents in Kashmir valley today, a police spokesman said. Bisma Majid, a class 12 student, died on the spot after being hit by a private mini-bus at Nowhatta in downtown Srinagar on her way to school, the spokesman said.

He said the driver of the mini-bus fled the scene after the accident and a hunt has been launched to nab him. However, his bus was seized by police.

Kingfisher plane explosives: Police still clueless

Thiruvananthapuram, March 22: A day after a cocktail of explosives was found in the cargo section of a Kingfisher plane here, police Monday were still clueless as to how it reached the aircraft despite multi-layered security checks.

Violence in Nepal after policeman rapes Indian teen

Kathmandu, March 22: Violence reigned in a famed temple town in southern Nepal Monday, for the third consecutive day, with mobs attacking police posts and clashing with baton-wielding police after an Indian teenager, belonging to a minority community, was allegedly raped by a sub-inspector.

The 18-year-old girl from India’s Bihar state had eloped with an Indian youth to Nepal after their families objected to their relationship since he belongs to the Hindu community.

Three convicted for murdering whistleblower Satyendra Dubey

Patna, March 22: Over six years after the murder of NHAI whistleblower Satyendra Kumar Dubey who exposed corruption in the golden quadrilateral project in Bihar, a court on Monday convicted three accused in the case.

The special CBI court in Patna has convicted Mantu Kumar, Udai Kumar and Pinku Ravidas in the murder case of Dubey, a young engineer working in the Golden Quadrilateral Project of National Highway Authority of India, a CBI spokesperson said in a statement, adding the quantum of sentence will be pronounced on March 27.

Trinamool leader shot dead in Burdwan

Burdwan (WB), March 22: A local Trinamool Congress leader was shot dead today allegedly by CPI(M) activists in Burdwan district. Around 200 CPI(M) activists swooped down on Mallikpur village in Mangalkote area and gunned down Hasmoth Sheikh in front of his mother, police said.

One of his relatives, Sheikh Sukur, was also injured is being treated at the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital. Local party leaders have alleged that CPI(M) leader W Ansari, who has been charged in many cases by the police earlier, is behind the killing.

3 cops killed in bus-oil tanker collision

Chandigarh, March 22: Three policemen, including an assistant sub-inspector, were today killed and two others injured in a police bus-oil tanker collision at a village in Punjab”s Nawanshahr district.

The empty oil tanker that was coming from the wrong side collided with the police bus in village Dhanekalera, killing the assistant sub-inspector, a head constable and a woman constable, Nawanshahr Senior Superintendent of Police Narinder Bhargav said.

Maoists trigger blast on rail tracks

Kolkata, March 22: Train movement in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district was disrupted when Maoists triggered a blast Monday, the first day of their 48-hour shutdown in six states.

The shutdown has been called in Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, and in three districts of Maharashtra – Bhandara, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli – in protest against the security forces’ ongoing Operation Green Hunt.

Auto rickshaw driver electrocuted in Delhi

New Delhi, March 22: A 45-year-old auto rickshaw driver was electrocuted when a high tension wire fell on his vehicle here, police said Monday.

The incident took place around 11.30 pm on Sunday in Pandav Nagar area of east Delhi when four electric poles came down crashing and a high tension wire fell on the vehicle, a police officer said.

“Ashok was killed while a passenger, Ajay, suffered critical injuries and was being treated at Lal Bahudur Shastri Hospital,” the officer said.

He said power company BSES was investigating the matter to ascertain the cause of accident.

Cyber criminals phishing money from bank accounts

Noida, March 22: Suresh Tewatia wanted to send an e-mail to his younger brother. But he was shocked to read a mail, supposedly from his bank, informing him of a withdrawal of Rs 90,000 from his bank account.

In case, the e-mail cautioned, Tewati did not know of the transaction, he must “verify” his “personal information” to safeguard against hacking. The electronic goods supplier promptly complied.

Man burnt over dispute

New Delhi, March 22: A 22-year-old BCA student suffered severe burns during a reported cylinder blast at his home near Moti Bagh on Sunday, police said. The family, however, claims he was set on fire over a property dispute.

Police have detained two of his cousins, one of them an MBA student. “The fire was caused by a cylinder blast.

We are finding out if it was accidental or deliberate. The victim has a property dispute with one of his uncles,” said Parmaditya, additional deputy commissioner of police (southwest).

Gang busted in human trafficking

New Delhi, March 22: Delhi Police claimed to have busted a gang involved in human trafficking which promised jobs in Saudi Arabia with the arrest of a 51-year-old man from Haryana.

The arrested have been identified as Mahboob Hussain, hailing from Mewat, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) H G S Dhaliwal said.

The gang had so far cheated more than 100 people, he said.

The gang allegedly used to send people illegally abroad by portraying a rosy picture of earning attractive salary in Saudi Arabia, he said.

Student leader shot dead in Agra

Agra, March 22: A university student’s union leader and a member of the Samajwadi Party was Sunday afternoon shot dead by unidentified assailants here, police said.

Police said more than 15 bullets were fired at Shiv Raj Choudhary. Eyewitnesses told police that the armed assailants had come in a car and stopped Choudhary, who was riding a motorcycle.

Police said some suspects have been identified and efforts were being made to arrest them.

Samajwadi Party workers and leaders reached the Pushpanjali Hospital to express grief.

Choudhary was a property broker by profession.

Driver gets 18 months in jail for killing child

Mumbai, March 22: A 21-year-old driver who had rammed his vehicle into five people, killing a nine-year-old, was convicted and sentenced to a year-and-a-half in prison.
