Student kidnapped for ransom, killed

Noida, March 26: He expressed his anger and shock with practiced ease and offered support to the family, which needed it badly. But they were in for a rude shock on Thursday when they got to know that the same man had murdered their son.

Noida police have arrested Vivek Patel and his accomplices Saurabh Punjabi and Vishal Sachdeva for kidnapping and killing Rohit Singh (23). They have also recovered the car in which they kidnapped the victim from his paying guest accommodation in Noida’s Sector 41 on March 20.

Two boys killed to ‘appease’ goddess

Ranchi, March 26: Eight people have been arrested while a woman is on the run in Jharkhand after they killed two minor boys in a gory display of ritualistic ‘sacrifice’, police said.

Police said three-year-old Sanatan’s throat was slit by a woman, Tulsi, in Ulihatu village in Jagannathpur district Tuesday in the presence of many villagers. The woman escaped after the killing.

In another incident, eight men and women were taken into custody after the mutilated body of six-year-old Aman, who had been missing since March 20, was found near his house.

One injured in grenade attack

Srinagar, March 26: A civilian was today injured in a grenade explosion by militants in Sopore town of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. Unidentified militants hurled a grenade on a CRPF bunker near State Bank of India branch in the town, 55 kms from here, around noon.

It, however, exploded on the road injuring a civilian. The injured was taken to hospital, they said, adding security forces and police immediately cordoned off the area.

7 members of family commit suicide

Jaipur, March 26: Seven members of a family, including a five-year-old boy and four girls, were killed in an apparent suicide pact in a place 35 km from Jaipur. Bansi Lal Jat (40) allegedly poisoned his son Babu (5) and daughter Babli (15) on Wednesday night and later jumped before a moving train with his wife Sita (36) and three daughters, Shravani (13), Kali (7), and Hansa (8).

Their bodies were found on Thursday morning. Jat and his daughters died on the spot while his wife died on the way to Sawai Man Singh Hospital in Jaipur.

Fire in hospital, patients miraculous escape

Chandigarh, March 26: Patients of a government multi-specialty hospital here had a miraculous escape Friday morning after a fire broke out in the trauma centre. There were no casualties, the hospital authorities said.

The trauma centre and the adjoining emergency operation theatres at the hospital in Sector 16 suffered damage due to the fire.

Four fire tenders were rushed. The blaze was controlled and all the patients were safe.

1,045 kg cocaine seized in Costa Rica

San Jose, March 26: Costa Rican police have seized more than a tonne of cocaine transported from Colombia and arrested four Colombians, a Nicaraguan and two Costa Ricans, a minister said.

Two boats laden with 525 kg of cocaine and two vehicles loaded with another 520 kg were seized along with GPS trackers and an AK-47 assault rifle from the men, Security Minister Janina Del Vecchio said Thursday.

Police said the drugs were to be shipped to North America or Europe.

Girl examinee strip-searched in UP college, principal apologises

Ghaziabad, March 26: A girl student, appearing for the class 10 exams of Uttar Pradesh board, was allegedly strip-searched by invigilators at a college here suspecting that she was carrying chits for copying, police said today.

The girl was writing the English paper of the UP Intermediate Education Board (UPIEB) exams in Rukmani Modi Mahila Inter College in Modinagar, 20km from Ghaziabad, when the incident took place yesterday.

Police said they received a complaint from the girl’s family that the invigilators made her remove her clothes to search for chits being carried for copying.

A major fire broke

Kolkata, March 26: A major fire broke out early on Friday in one of the largest ammunition depots of Indian Army at Panagarh in Burdwan district of West Bengal, gutting a store house containing a large number of small arms and ammunition.

“The fire broke out in shed number 16 (store house) of the depot at 1.30 am. Within five minutes, the entire fire fighting machinery of the Army was activated to battle the blaze,” Wing Commander M. Upasani of Eastern Command told.

Eight killed in road mishap in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, March 26: Eight people, including two children, were killed Friday in a road accident in Orissa’s Dhenkanal district, police said.

The mishap took place when a trekker carrying some passengers of Khajuria village in Dhenkanal district had a head on collision with a speeding truck near Baldiabandh on National Highway 42 early Friday. The villagers were returning home after watching the Opera near Khuntuni.

‘The driver may have dosed off early in the morning leading to the accident,’ a police officer said.

Three arrested for abducting, killing Noida Amity student

Noida, March 26: Three persons were arrested Thursday for killing a 20-year-old Amity University student after abducting him from this satellite town March 20 and disposing of his body in Aligarh, police said.

Rohit Singh, son of a government contractor, was in second year doing a B.Tech course. He belonged to Aligarh.

90 Maoists killed

Raipur, March 26: More than 90 Maoist militants were killed and 12 terror camps dismantled during the government’s anti-Maoist Operation Green Hunt, Chhattisgarh Home Minister Nankiram Kanwar said on Thursday.

“As many as 90 Maoists were killed and 12 of their terror camps were destroyed till Feb 27 this year in the state’s Bastar region under Operation Green Hunt,” the minister told the assembly during question hour.

Three arrested for abducting, killing Amity student

Noida, March 26: Three persons were arrested for killing a 20-year-old Amity University student after abducting him from this satellite town March 20 and disposing of his body in Aligarh, police said.

Rohit Singh, son of a government contractor, was in second year doing a B.Tech course. He belonged to Aligarh. Presenting the accused in front of the media here, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ashok Kumar said the trio kidnapped Rohit from Sector 46, Noida March 20. The three took him in a car to Panipat from where they made a ransom call of Rs.1 crore to his parents in Aligarh.

Bus driver may have dozed off, says probe

Thiruvananthapuram, March 26: The driver of the ill-fated bus which plunged into a river at Thazhathangadi in Kottayam killing 10 people on Tuesday afternoon may have dozed off while at the wheels leading to the tragedy.

This was the preliminary finding of the central zone transport commissioner P K Stephen who inquired into the accident.

Three arrested for cheating job seekers in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, March 26: Three persons were arrested by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) here for allegedly cheating jobseekers to the tune of lakhs of rupees by promising them lucrative jobs, police said today.

K Venugopal, after completing his MCA, floated ‘Skill Bank Consultancy’ and along with his wife and three others collected resumes of jobseekers and sent fake offer letters as if they were issued from reputed companies by collecting amounts ranging to Rs 1-1.5 lakh per candidate, a senior CID officer said.

Five killed as car falls into gorge

Shimla, March 25: Five people, including a couple, were killed in a road accident in Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla district Thursday evening, police said.

The accident occurred when an Alto car, with six people on board, fell into a gorge near Nerva town, about 120 km from here, at around 5.30 p.m, Superintendent of Police R.M. Sharma told .

They were on the way to Nerva from Chopal in upper Shimla.

The dead have been identified as Sushma Sood and her husband Ramesh Sood, Madhusudan Sharma, Bal Mukand and car driver Rajesh.

Drugs, illicit liquor seized, 15 arrested

Srinagar, March 25: In their drive against drug peddlers and bootleggers, Jammu and Kashmir Police today arrested 15 persons and seized drugs and illicit liquor during separate raids in Anantnag district.

A dozen drug peddlers were rounded up and booked in a special campaign for the eradication of the menace of drug addiction in Anantnag town, 55 kms from here in South Kashmir, a police spokesman said.

Explosion in garbage dump in Sonebhadra

Sonebhadra, March 25: An explosion took place in a garbage dump at Chopan railway station here this morning, police said.

According to police, the explosion took place as the garbage collected in the dump near the canteen at platform number one was set ablaze by the railways staff.

The explosion was so massive that a nearby wall collapsed under its impact, they said, adding nobody was injured in the incident.

Senior police and GRP officials rushed to the spot and carried out a thorough check. However, the cause of explosion could not be ascertained, police said.

Four killed, 26 affected after consuming poisonous food

Rampur, March 25: Five persons, including three children, died and at least 26 others were taken seriously ill after they consumed poisonous food at a religious function here. A large number of devotees participated in the function held last evening where they were served ”prasad”.

After eating the food, they complained of giddiness, vomiting and chest pain, district magistrate Samyukta Samadder said, adding one person died yesterday, while four other, including the children succumbed today. An inquiry has been ordered in the incident, district magistrate Samyukta Samadder said today.

Four killed in road mishap

Jaipur, March 25: Four persons were today killed and as many injured when a jeep in which they were travelling collided with a train in Jaisalmer district, 645 kms from here.

The mishap occurred in Delasar village when the jeep collided with the train at an unmanned railway crossing, police said, adding, that condition of the four injured was stated to be stable.

Two hideouts busted in JK

Jammu, March 25: Two hideouts were busted by the security forces and a cache of arms and ammunition was recovered in Doda and Poonch districts of Jammu and Kashmir.

On a tip off, security forces and police launched a search operation in Damdidan area in Surankote tehsil of Poonch district early today and busted the hideout, officials said, adding 140 rounds of PIKA gun, five electronic detonators, two chinese grenades, three AK magazines were recovered from it.

Bagaha, March 25: Motorcycle borne persons kidnapped three people– a cloth merchant, a hotelier and his son –from near Belhawa Chowk under Chautaha police station area of Bihar”s West Champaran district, police said today.

Superintendent of Police, Special Task Force (STF) Sidhartha Mohan Jain told reporters here that Santosh Kumar, a cloth merchant, Pramod Kumar, a hotelier and his son Rahul Kumar were kidnapped by men wearing police uniform of the State Auxiliary Police (SAP) at gun point last night.

New Delhi, March 25: Delhi Police have arrested a part-time Bollywood actor for his involvement in two murder cases. Imran Hasmi, 26, had even shared screen space with Shah Rukh Khan in Billu. Hasmi was arrested from a south Delhi mall on Wednesday when he came to meet notorious western UP gangster Pehelwan.

“Hasmi had acted in My Friend Ganesha and Billu. During interrogation, he revealed his involvement in two murder cases. He had twice escaped from the custody of Uttar Pradesh Police and Delhi Police,” deputy commissioner of police (south) HGS Dhaliwal said.

Two held for City Limo-like racket

Mumbai, March 25: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) has arrested two men who allegedly duped thousands of investors of crores of rupees by floating an investment scheme like the City Limouzine scam. Pramod Raut and Sajid Warekar were arrested from Thane on Tuesday, said Additional Commissioner of Police, EOW, Sanjay Saxena.

On Wednesday, the court remanded them in police custody. Saxena said the duo had floated a scheme called M Limouzine wherein an investor was assured of monthly returns against the purchase of a vehicle, which was to be rented out by the company.
